So what the hell? Sawyer shoots him and it ricochets back? Who are these guys?
I thought Sawyer raised his gun and one of the Captain's co-horts shot Sawyer.

Okay, I just asked my daughter who watches with me and she swears Sawyer shot and the bullet ricocheted back.
I mean think about it...if someone shot Sawyer why wouldn't he have gone on a shooting rampage? His reaction was one of, "what the hell just happened?".
