I never really had any problems but the guy at the shop I frenquent now used to watch me like a hawk and make me really nervous. I figured he didn't really like me being in there for a long time. When I bought stuff he wouldn't talk to me aside from telling me the amount. It was infuriating. Then I bought some Barry Ween books and he started talking about how great they were. We bonded. Now he's friendly, but he doesn't seem to like X-Men which is the main books I buy. He kinda handles my X-books like they're tainted when he rings them up.
This guy in this column though, he needs a big kick in the ass by a girl in spike heels and spandex. No, he'd prolly like that.Maybe Storm should go fry him. Zzzzt! However, I read the stuff in the Truth about whatever his name was forum and those guys picked him apart quite well.

Well, I've never experienced any bad treatment in comic stores as a woman. But I have had an experience in which the staff seriously questioned my taste. As in "Can't you buy a proper "bande dessine?" instead of that American commercial junk? Somebody your age should know better than read the X-men!"
Woman and adults reading comics is more acceptable in Europe, and as a result of this there is more high-brow, adult and artsy stuff on the market. All of it creator owned, and often very high quality. A main stream American comic is sometimes snobbishly looked down on.
Personally, I buy stuff out of both categories. I love a good, profound and adult comic every now and then. But reading that all the time would be a bore. Time for a good juicy superhero comic! Light, plenty of pathos and not too much detailed gore and sex. I guess Marvel comics are my substitute for soapoperas...

I just figured out how to use the bread making machine to make dough! Anybody want a fresh (misshapen) bagel or cinnamon rolls?
The one real comic shop I've ever been in was kinda creepy. The kid in charge (err, he looked like a kid to me!) ignored all of the other potential customers (young males) and stared at me. Maybe he was thinking that I was totally hot or something, but for some reason that didn't fit the situation. I used to get shit treatment because I was a girl at my comic shop. The asshole wouldn't order the comics I asked for, gave me an attitude and frequently made comments about my gender on occasion. There really is bigotry against us out there, and we're supposed to act like it's funny or normal.
Fortunatley my shop has new owners and they are really cool. Everytime I stop by, I buy something even if what I came for isn't in. I want them to stick around.

I used to get that too. For a while I was going to a Walden's bookstore for my x-men comics, and the clerk there just had this hostility thing for me. He was a young dude, and he would be scowl and me when I'd come in. And I remember when I was a teen, I visited a comic shop at a mall, and the owner seemed to really detest me. He followed me onto the subway and glared at me. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out if I'm doing something wrong to tick these guys off, but there was absolutely nothing that I was doing to warrent that. The truth is the kind of guys who hate women read comics. That doesn't mean all guys who read comics hate women, but the one's who do hate us seem to be interested in them. I think they must read the porno and rape-as-entertainment type books. They probably hate x-men because of all the strong women characters like Storm or Shadowcat.

I'm a security guard at a power plant they're building in San Marcos. It's 12 hours for 3 days, then 6 on the fourth day for 9.50 an hour.
I haven't gotten any flak for reading comics. Mostly because I don't take shit (excuse me) from anyone, about anything. And the guys at the comic shop know it and are very nice to me.

I dont get it, 'cause I am absolutely thrilled whenever I see girls in my regular comic shop! Another really popular shop here in South Florida that i'm crazy about is called 'Tate's comics'. There's an anime-addicted girl behind the counter that almost EVERY guy who shops there is in love with, and Tate's is frequented by some of THE coolest comic-collecting girls (besides you guys!) that i've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

You're probably on to something there. For a while, I was really meek and tried to find ways to appease the assholes. After I got fed up and got this Kiss-my-ass attitude toward them, they shaped up or shipped out. I think you got to have that attitude to make it in this world. It's not all peace and love. You have to be willing to crack some nuts to get respect.

There is a comic shop in Austin called Dragon's Layer and every, well almost every, time I go in there, I get stared at. The last time I was there a adult RPG player literally stopped what he was doing and stared at me until the guy next to him hit him to continue. I had my back to him and didn't see it, but my step dad had seen it and told me. Of course it might have had something to do with what I was wearing at the time...(Jeans, purple tie-dye spagetti strap shirt and a black see through shirt over it, and I had my hair up in a pony tail.) But I have had a few guys stare at me when they saw I was an anime freak. The reminds me, I gotta go stop by Animagix in Austin soon.

Hey BAMF! It's probably a regional thing. I live in the DC area, and comics aren't all that popular here. So it's kinda an underground sort of thing. Not too respectable. So maybe these guys think a girl who reads them isn't respectable either. That's just my theory of the moment. It's sounds a lot better where you live. People arent' so uptight.
But like I said, things are looking up. My local shop is great now with the new owners. I don't get anymore crap.

I didn't get any trash in the first place from the comic book shop guys, but I have from others and they all left me alone after I ripped their heads off about my reading comics. That doesn't happen to often in Texas, I guess reading comics here is a ok thing.
