YAY!!!!! I'm so excited I can start reading Uncanny again!!! Joe Casey is off the title, what a relief! I can now read the adventures of the Fuzzy Elf again! OH and another big plus, Northstar is oficially joining the team, finally an openly gay super hero in a mainstream comic book!!! Now we just gotta get Kurt outta the clergy! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

Okay, first, obviuously you haven't been reading Uncanny. I'm a total critic when it comes to comic writing and the last few issues are awesome.
Second, I'm pretty sure that the priest thing will be resolved before Casey is gone, so you'll have to at least give him Kudos for that.
Third, I like that Northstar is joining the team, but I just hope they don't make him into one big gay stereotype or make the book a big gay joke.
Fourth, as is policy at this board, you may not knock a title until you have read it. You can say that you did not care for it when you read it, but you cannot assume that it is still as bad as it was, because most get better.
You're being writer-prejudice. And I can NOT STAND THAT!
Fifth, I'm editing the title of this thread, because I will not have such negativity on my board.

in total agreememnt with Knight Crawler... Casey is doing some damn fine writing lately, it is unfortunate that he felt obliged to leave because of childish behaviour such as this. mindlessly hurling not only professional but personal attacks at him after reading a couple issues not to their tastes. I mean you even admit to not having read it lately, and damn, it is GOOD right now, the Annual was one of the best things i've read in a very long time and 402 was very cool, better than New. i am so psyched for the next issue it's not even funny. it's too bad you'll miss Nightcrawler leaving the priesthood considering you wont read Uncanny while Casey is writing.... http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif

Now you are wrong on some of your points http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif I have been reading Uncanny up until last issue when I finally couldn't take it anymore. I then for the first time 20 years walked into my comic book store and dropped Uncanny X-Men. I was voting with my dollar. Uncanny X-Men was the worst comic book I have ever read. The characters were card board cut outs, the stories were rehashes and un original and my favorite character was acting like someone else. The one that really bothered me was the whole "Chmaber you have no choice, you are not normal, you must join our cult of the X-Men". Nightcrawler would have never done that!!! Not in a thousand years would Kurt say something like that to Chamber. Remember Kurt has always questioned Xavier's dream, possibly more than any other X-Man. Remember back in the day when Rachel first joined the X-Men and Kurt suggested to Chuck that maybe they should disband the X-Men? Kurt has never been a boy scout like Scott Summers, Kurt has always had his own vision which made him such a great leader in Exacalibur.
I am extremely happy Casey has chosen to leave the title, this can only be a good move. And on another note I have never slammed Casey personally, I'm sure he's a nice guy, I just hate his writing.

We just got the Uncanny Annual up here in the boonies so now I can finally read it. It's only... a month late or so.
If Casey is leaving, who is taking his place?

I'm not sad to see Casey go, but not estatic either. While I disliked all his issues except for Uncanny #399, I really liked the X-Corps idea, something with many possibilities. I also heard great things about the Annual, so I gotta check that out. Anyways, Casey might have gotten better with time, but he didn't take it, and the fans wouldn't let him. I hope he does well on further projects: He's not a bad writer per se.
As for who's the new writer, it's Chuck Austen or something, the guy who wrote Ultimate X-Men 13 and 14, and the War Machine mini-series.
I think he's dropping Chamber, and adding Northstar, and two others. Though I think a team of Nightcrawler, Archangel, Stacy X, Iceman, Wolverine part time, Xavier part time, Northstar AND two others is a WAY too big team, I'm crossing my fingers to have one of the addidions be Dazzler http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/tongue.gif
Still, 9 members is a bit X-Treme (ha! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/tongue.gif).
While I'm on the topic of teams being too big: Get rid of Davey, Lifeguard and Thunderbird please http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

*Blinks* What'd I miss? Oh well.
This the first I've heard that Casey was going bye-bye. I admit his first arc *cough* Poptopia *cough* wasn't so hot, but his book has gotten better ever since. I really like Stacy, the return of Sean, and look forward to the resolution of Kurt's little 'memory problem.'
I read the story on WizardWorld.com, and I didn't get much of an impression of Austen. His Ultimate work was pretty good, I admit, with a nice intro for the Cajun. Maybe if, as he says, he's a fan from back in the day then he may be able to bring some of the old spark into the new age. I like the progressive steps the X-Men have been taking, barring Claremont's book, and I hate to see him undo any of the good Casey did.
Whatever. It's like KC says, keep an open mind. I just hope he keeps Kurt on the team. Of course, after Casey's Supreme Pontiff is through with him, he may not be recognizable.

Hmmm, from what I have seen online, Casey's writing on the title is starting to improve. My comics shop still is not carrying it on shelf. They want a commitment to buy... Something I won't do for any title. I would think there are more forces at work than a few loud fans and would like to see the press release regarding this.
As far as it goes I disagree with how Casey portrayed the X-Men through 401. Under him we see Kurt has lost all vestiges of his old personality, he is dull. Logan has lost the fighting for control of his rage that made him interesting at all, now he just drinks. Why Stacy? Admittedly, I like her but would have preferred almost anyone else (particularly Kit Pryde, but Marrow is a close second).
As for this "new" story arc. For months we have seen the preliminary sketches for Ultimate X-Men with Banshee running a militant mutant organization. Since Casey is the first to publish it I won't call it plagiarism... but it feels a bit like "Oh look, what a cool idea..."
For all that I would not like to see him go. He is getting into his groove and it takes any good writer (outside of minis) about a year to get going. Casey has had to deal with some of the worst art that Marvel has produced. THAT gets tough when the art and story are considered one in a medium like comic-books.
I have to agree with Knight_Crawler on one point: eXiles is one of my favs. I will disagree with the blanket statements about Claremont's writing being cut-outs with superpowers attached but agree get rid of Lifeguard, Thunderbird, etc...

Ooh, Exiles talk!!!!!!
This is *so* my favorite comic right now. Quite possibly my favorite *ever*. It's just *such* great stories each month!!!! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
About X-Treme...I *really* liked the developments around Sage, the scene where she was being manipulated by Mastermind was just one of the best scenes ever, not much dialogue, subtle transitions art-wise...but the rest of the vast cast have had little development. Rogue had some good things in the annual, possibly leading towards *better* control of her powers. Can it be????
But honestly, Neal, Davey and Ligeguard need to get lost. The Cameron siblings are just plot devices, Heather with her "save lives" gig, and Davey with his "warping" (Probably brought out by Sage's power to catalyse mutant powers). Sure, Neal and Davey are like, the hottest things to ever grace paper, but looks only take you so far http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif
My preffered X-Treme team would be Storm, Rogue, Sage, Gambit and Shadowcat, screw the losers and Bishop's "I'm a cop" syndrom, heh.

oh, Exiles! is there any doubt that i love it? i just hope Nocturne is not the one that bites the dust soon http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif but we know it will not be Sunfire cause she is going to be on the cover of an upcoming issue, we KNOW it aint gonna be Blink, i mean come on... the series was created for her, and where would the Sabretooth sub-plot go if she dies? Mimic i would normally doubt, but the Captain America fight in the arena has me worried. Morph i highly doubt, he's the comic relief. so that pretty much leaves it a draw betwen Thunderbird and Nocturne with a slim chance of Mimic http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif please oh please be Thunderbird... we need to see Nocturne whoop Mystiques ass to save Nighty!
and on the subject of casey... well, i agree his style is different, and not ot everyones taste, with him you kninda have to read between the lines... it's not so much about the characters, as it is the world they live in. Nightcrawler was off, but he is getting better. besides, characters DO change... we may not like the new direction but it does happen, they do not stay the same forever, and Nighty lost his spark before Casey ever got his hands on him.
as for X-Treme ugh. the last straw was the latest preview pages i saw.... Davis is now a mutant, a rather powerful teleporter... for one thing, i am all for a human hanging with the X-men, shows that Xaviers dream has hope, so i thought that kinda sucked. but my main gripe is the lame-o factor here. him being a mutant is not so bad and i love teleportation as a mutant ability, obviously.... but he SURFS thru this alternate dimension, he's got himself a surf board and he surfs from place to place... http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif how lame is that? and i agree, the characters are so much more paper cut outs than anything in Uncanny. all they do is constantly state things about themselves and their powers like Bishop "I'm a cop" kinda thing. ugh. I used to like Claremont, but he seriously dropped the ball here.

Maybe it all comes down to a matter of taste. I agree that when Casey started, it was pretty bad...but I think the big reason people are still complaining is that he just gradually got better, instead of one issue just suddenly being fantastic. We're in a quick fix instant gratification world and we want it better NOW! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I gave all the X-books a chance. <font color=#ffcc00>Uncanny</font>, <font color=#ffcc00>New</font>, <font color=#ffcc00>X-Treme</font>, <font color=#ffcc00>eXiles</font>, <font color=#ffcc00>X-Force</font>...and I've just since 401 started to like <font color=#ffcc00>Uncanny</font> (though I DID like 400 in parts), <font color=#ffcc00>New</font> has great writing, but it still feels weird, though it has begun to feel like X-Men again, without losing it's edge and touch (see? Even everyone's beloved Morrison had to give it a few months to find his groove), <font color=#ffcc00>X-Treme</font>...*sigh* I tried. I really did. I've read every issue up to the current one, and the dialogue is still bad. The story wasn't too bad until Lifeguard and I honestly don't mind the wordiness. That's Claremont's style and I dig. But you wanna talk about flat cardboard cutouts with powers? <font color=#ffcc00>eXiles</font> is STILL GREAT. Every story so far has had me hooked and the latest one, with the Skrull Earth is no exception. Definitely my favorite of the X-books. <font color=#ffcc00>X-Force</font>...now I'm not much of a fan of the book, but I must say that it is good. It's relatively original, has neat takes on mutants, has a good dose of humor, and a BIG dose of gore. All in all a good read, just not really my cup of tea (everyone who is an art fan should check out the <font color=#ffcc00>X-Force</font> 'Nuff Said issue...homages to lots of great artists!).
Chuck Austen will be replacing Casey as <font color=#ffcc00>Uncanny</font>'s writer...and he's going to be torn apart, too. It'll take him probably a few months to get his groove, too, and in that time the raving fanboys will have torn him apart and decided in their minds exactly what his run will be like.
My advice to EVERYONE is to pick up each issue with an open mind. Forget WHO is writing it until you're done. A lot of people still read them, but they've already decided in their mind that it's going to be bad and then, for them, it is. Of course, this can backfire if you're a fan of a particular writer, because I think the opposite is happening with <font color=#ffcc00>X-Treme</font>. People have decided in their minds that it's good, and for them it is. Which is fine for them. If you enjoy it, stick to it!
Again, I guess it all comes down to taste.
Oh, and <font color=#ffcc00>Sugah</font>, that was the funniest pun I've seen in a long time. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I also think that having more than 6 members on a team without the rest OFFICIALLY in the background (Prof. X) is bad for writing. Sure, you get to see more characters, and if you're a fan of those characters, it's better for you, but UGH it clogs everything up. You can't really have character development without leaving half the team conspicuously out of it and fights get to be where they're an issue long if the team's against a foe that's a match for them or 1 page long because they're beating down Bob Q. Criminal for mugging an old lady. It's just bad for storytelling to have that many characters around all the time.

Yeah, the power sucks big time. Luckily, it will still make him pretty worhtless in a battle. Still, someone please get rid of those two "plot-devices". CHUCK AUSTEN TALKS UNCANNY X-MEN in http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stori.../11/austen.htm
Yeah! Nightcrawler will stay in the Uncanny line-up and Austen says even more:
"I hadn't kept up with the X-Men until recently with some of Grant's (Morrison) stuff. So I didn't know the recent history, or the changes in character. I was shocked to learn Nightcrawler was a priest in training." http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/eek.gif Does this mean that the priest thing might have it's days numbered? http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
I must tell you that I didn't bought the Uncanny for 6 years and that I started to buy again with 396 (because of the cover - and maybe also because of the hype) and I hated it, I really hated 396, Nightcrawler just didn't felt right; but I insisted and waited for things to get better and they never did. I haven't read 402, but one thing I can tell you about 401, I hated it too - it made me read the script (see the Elektra issue, or even Captain Marvel 'Nuff Said issue).
So I'm very pleased that Mr.Casey is gone and I'm hopping that Austen writes Uncanny at least as well as he draws Elektra.

Ah yes, but that was speculation, much as NC63 is speculating, by posting link to a recent interview.
It was posted at X-Fan & NEWSarama, that Casey would be closing some of HIS plot points. But it never said which ones. So Kurt may still well be a priest when Casey leaves, and Austen might keep him that way. Only time will tell.
As many have stated Casey's start wasn't steller, but I think he showed promise in the last few issues that came out.
As for Kurt chiding Chamber, he has done it before. NC barked at Peter when he hurt Wisdom. He often yelled at Cap B, during the early run of Excaliber. There have even been occassions during the early adv s of the All New X-Men that NC would try and talk with Scott to get Cyc to open up and talk to him. As with all the instances, Kurt wasn't being mean, but trying to get his point across.

There is a diference between a character changing or taking a new direction and assassinating the character. Casey doesn't seem to have a grasp of the characters' personalities (or doesn't care). I don't mind How Kurt acts in the mini. He is essentially Kurt, Casey has little grasp on the character and to cover he has the Supreme Pontiff (or was that a supreme burrito combo) erase what little is left.

Could not agree more! I could see it if he was just a dude. but now he warps? LAME.
Now I gotta say Kurt is a strong willed guy. When he popped off at Jono it was from bitter personal experience. Even more fodder for the speculation. X-Fan is back up or at least I can now get to it again. They have an interview with Austen.
2 tidbits.
on who will be featured Nightcrawler because I want to get him back to being fun again, like the sensitive prankster I loved as a kid.
X-FAN: Will Nightcrawler still be a priest-in-training?
AUSTEN: Time will tell.
So if/whether the priest thing will end is still up for debate. But it may well have run its course, which is sad because there was a lot of potential there. Religion as a plot device used in the relaunch of DareDevil was effective. Kurt's being a priest really hasn't added anything to the Uncanny stories YET! But it has been used rather well in the new NC Mini.
------------------
http://www.bamfcentral.com/
-
While I agree somewhat, BC, I think that the priest thing was a bad idea to start with. Religion can be a great plot device no doubt, but Kurt always had his deep faith...and MOST religious people never feel the need to take the step towards priesthood. The fact that that is such a HUGE step, essentially a totally different life direction, but hasn't been explained or really dealt with is what makes it a bad idea. The faith is great, but Kurt becoming a priest is as out of character as Daredevil becoming one. Something BIG would had to have happened to him to launch him down that path, and since that has NEVER even been HINTED at, I still feel that it's out of character and a BADLY HANDLED plot device.
Now, the resolution of the priest thing should be interesting because we'll get to see how he keeps his faith while coming to grips with how he "failed" at becoming a priest...
And if you're defending his becoming a priest becuase it puts religion into mainstream comics, just remember that Kurt was ALWAYS religious, ALWAYS full of faith, and the put religion into the X-Men looooong before this idea came to pass.

I speculated the death of Colossus brought about Kurt's change of direction. The life of an X-Man brought this terrible negativity to his life, his other main belief was God. So he went that direction to seek anwsers. Again, this is only my speculation.
Not defending the need of Religion in mainstream. It would be just a big change to drop the "Dog Collor", as dubbed by Churchill, as it was a big change to add it. Be kinda like Batman starts carrying a gun and killing people in the comics for about a two year run, then he stops. {And yes I do realize Bats has carried a gun in a few stories, I am talking a major arc that spans a few publishing years} As long as it is handled well whatever the direction, it is fine with me. I was just pointing out good uses of Religion in a few comics was all. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif

I don't mind religion in comics. Kurt has always been religious, but religious does not equal fit for the priesthood.
I posted my review of the NC mini in the "Who's read Nighty 3" topic. In short, if Kipiniak was writing Kurt, I could accept him in the priesthood. It is that good.
I will, however, argue about just how much story potential there is for a priest character in the X-Men. He still needs to spend a few years as an under-priest: visiting the old folks home, hospitals, running literacy programs... helping a older priest run a parish, full time work, no flying off to save the world as an X-Man. Some compelling stories, no doubt, but you are not gonna see a lot of action. And it won't sell.

but.... Colossus died after Kurt became a priest in training...
i don't mind having a religious character, but i feel this was forced because he happens to look like a demon and they thought it would be ironic. normally i am all for a character evolving, but in this instence, i want a change back. he's become *boring*. true there may be *some* potential stories, but the possibilities are limited and would be excausted quickly. also, so far the only writer to be able to work the priest aspect into his character and keep him interesting was Kipiniak... aparently it is quite a difficult character trait for most writers to grasp, so i would rather it be ditched to bring back the old crawler because with the turnover rate lately, he will be written by several writers unless Austen proves to be a shocker and sticks around for more than a year or two. and under most writers, more often than not, i think his character would be handled poorly as a priest.
Besides, as mentioned i think he was made Catholic for silly reasons in the first place, what's done is done, true... but i still insist it is silly for him to be Catholic at all. i mean think of his background, he was raised by a sorceress! where did he get the notion to become Catholic in the first place, let alone follow thru with it to the point of joining the priesthood, if he was not raised in that religion? Catholosism is a fairly heavy duty religion here, it is not one that you pick up on a whim. if you are raised in a pagan or athiest background, trust me, it takes a LOT to consider following any form of organized religion. i speak from experience, being an athiest myself, with grandparents who would rahter my sister and i were raised to be good Catholics (my mother left the religion after she and my father were married and is now a steadfast athiest/agnostic, so i was raised an athiest from the beginning). it is NOT a simple thing to change your entire view of the world... if you are christian, would you consider switching to a pagan religion like worshipping the ancient Egyptian gods (for instance... and yes some people still worship them) for no reason? that is essentially what happened here.

It was after the X-Men battled Sinister that there was the 6 month gap, then we get back to the X-Men and wham Kurt's a priest in training.
So I was wrong. And they never really touched on it. Though Peter's death could have been a good catalyst.
I do understand why the writers wish to drop continuity. There is just so much to remember for just one character not to mention the whole team and any villians they face.
But I will say it would be nice to see Kurt the fun hearted guy again, but just so long as he isn't considered the mascot of the team again.

I would prefer to get a resolution on that Supreme Pontiff crap before Casey leaves though. Kurt's already screwed up enough, he doesn't need big hanging plot points all over everywhere.
