After reading BlueElfEars' story in the TMI thread about Blue the turtle who was pronounced unfairly dead, I thought it was only fair to post a topic where us Elfaholics can give Blue some words of encouragment for this poor non-dead amphibian. Who knows, if he pulls through maybe we can adopt him as the monuments official mascot.

A poem for Blue the turtle...
Hey, little critter,
I hope you get better,
I'll knit you a sweater...
Uh, nevermind. Ya know, mouth to mouth works great on reptiles if he has a relapse. No, really. I gave mouth to mouth to my roommate's Chinese water dragon once when my roomie thought she'd drown him. Worked like a charm, nasty aftertaste...

Thank you. We'll see how it's going tomorrow. The vet didn't have office hours today so I couldn't call.
Slarti, I would definitly do mouth to mouth but Blue has a bacterial infection in his lungs, so they're filled with fluid. He got an antibiotic shot, fluids, and a heating pad and was looking better as of last evening. Unfortunately reptiles don't respond quickly to antibiotics. Besides, he's too small to do mouth to mouth on. His shell is about 1 and 1/2 inches long.
If he survives I'll put a picture of him up.

Blue the turtle
Fall 2000- Winter 2001
Blue succumbed yesterday afternoon to his bacterial infection. He was a good little turtle and the cutest Red-Eared Slider I've ever seen.
At least he's not hurting anymore. :'(

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Aw man, you have no idea how gutted I am about poor Blue http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif I thought about him all day at work. It did sound like the poor fella was pretty ill, so hopefully it is better this way, but it still doesn't make the loss any easier. If you will allow me to say a few words.....
"Blue was a fine turtle, well respected through the reptile community. His friends new him as a fun loving creature but also as a turtle that they could turn to and rely on. And although Blue is sadly no longer with us his memory will live on in the memory of his friends and family. So if you could all please raise your glasses and make a quiet toast to Blue, the cutest red-eared slider you'll ever see."

Actually, the two other turtles in the tank thought Blue was a rock. He kept getting stepped on. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks, Mitty, I REALLY needed a laugh. It's been so glum around my apartment, but your little speech made me remember how Blue acted when he was alive.
The way he nibbled on my fingers at dinner time.
The little plopping sounds he made everytime he frantically jumped into the water.
The way he would spread his feet out when he was sunning. (Jazz feet) http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
He was the most inquisitive, cheerful turtle I've ever had. Thank you for the support, guys. It means a lot to me.

Geez, I'm really sorry about Blue! I've had turtles before, and iguanas, and I konw how tough it is to keep exotic pets healthy.
Matter of fact, on the continuing bummer trend...my cockatiel died today. It was so sudden! Poor P2, I had her for three years! She was the sweetest little bird, she loved to have her head scratched and she would sleep in your lap...*sniff....*
I'm gonna go be depressed for a while...
-
Aww, Slarti, I'm sorry!!
*gives Blue and Slarti a BIG hug*

I'm so sorry, Slarti. Tell you what. Hot chocolate alway cheers me up, do you want some (virtual, of course)? We could sit by the fire and reminisce about the best qualities of our poor pets. That helped me feel less like something had been taken away from me and more like I was lucky to have every moment with little Blue. Still depressing, but you feel a *little* better.
Who knows, maybe Blue and P2 are talking up a storm about how great their owners treated them and how they wish they could come back to us. Just a thought. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

Poor Blue. My brother's hamster died about a month ago. Poor Jane. I remember how, towards the end, her hips got so big she could have been an extra on Chicken Run. Of course, she would have had to have some sort of harness to hold her up. One with wheels, cause she didn't walk much after she went into her coma.
But there were good memories too, like how she used to run around in her little hamster ball (this was before she got sick) while I was waiting for X-Men to come on. Or the time I stuck her on Frenchie's shoulder and scared the crap out of her. Both of them.
This is one depressing thread.

I used to have a cat named Puff. Yes, that really was the cat's name, I was 5 when I got her okay. My half sister Delores gave her to me, and she was the first cat that was all mine. I had a cat before her named Sparkle, who disappeard, but I had to share her.
Anyway, she was a fruit eating cat. Seriously. She would eat bannanas (how the hell do you spell that?), honey dew, and her favorite was canalope. She scrape the fruit off of the rind and then chew on the rind.
When Choas, one of my stepdad's cat's, had her kittens, Puff got pissed. She peed on my mom's bed, and before anyone could talk my mom out of it, she took Puff down to the vet's and had her put to sleep. I come home from school, and find out that my cat is dead. I got mad, then I cried. This is a cat that I had had for almost 10 years and now she was gone.
Speaking of food eating cats, we had another one that did this. He was one of my step dad's cats and his name was Faust. He was a fluffy orange tom and was such a sweet thing. His deal was "If you can eat it, I can eat it." His favorite was tuna salad. He disappeared one day and we haven't seen him since.
We had another orange tom named Sunskist, like the orange, my mom named him. Nice and fluffy like Faust, and so sweet! He loved to have me pet him. He disappeared too. Although, we are pertty sure what happened to him. Across the street we had some cat hating neibors. We're pertty sure that they caught him and either (a) drowned him in their pool, (they had a pool in their back yard) or (b) dumped him far away from us.

Turtle sex stories! We have a couple of breeding age box turtles, and the experts always say that it's hard to get box turtles to breed. Not when you have Olaf around! Poor Scrabble doesn't like him, so we don't let them, uh, get together anymore.
Believe me, mating box turtles are extremely comical. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Well I've only ever had one cat, and one dog (plus a handful of goldfish) in my lifetime. But thankfully they never seemed that interested in each other, unless they were having secret liaisons while we were all asleep. But I think he would of noticed if Henry the cat started walking funnily. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/tongue.gif Sadly they both died of natural causes, but they had long and happy lives, free of other siblings and Olaf the turtle trying to get a swift one out of them.
It seems that the Monument has been all about loss at the moment. So I here by errect the Monument's monument Of Deceased Pets erected in loving memory of all household creatures that have bought us so much happiness over the years, be it by eating fruit or being a fruit (I don't know if that joke will travel over to American?!?) but can sadly be no longer with us:
Blue, the turtle
P2, the cockatiel
Jane, the hamster
Puff, the cat
Faust, the cat (MIA)
Sunkist, the cat (MIA)
Henry, the cat
Bilbo, the dog
Add you own pets name and their memory will live forever.....

I have been blessed to grow up with dogs and cats. Our dog, Scooter, was the sweetest kindest dog in the whole wide world. I mean, this dog did no wrong. She lived until she was 13 years old; she had a stroke and could not walk well after that. It took us several years to get another dog b/c Scooter was such a part of the family.
We also had a lot of great kitties. The vast majority of our cats were great - not fussy or picky at all. My cat, Onyx, was like a kid and let me carry him around like a baby! I used to take naps on the couch, and he would lie on my legs, on his back and nap too. He was hysterical!
I miss those two but love my pets now tremendously. Zoe (our dog) is like my mom's third child; she always has to be the center of attention but is very endearing. Phoebe (our cat) is such a great kitty. I think she is particularly fond of me because I'm the one who took her in (she was a stray living behind our house).
This thread is making me really appreciate my pets!

Are we telling all our funny cat stories now? OK, here's a gooder. I used to have two cats, Barnabus and Garfield. They were from the same litter and they were real close. One day, the were sleeping all cuddled up and Barnabus started putting the moves on Garfield. It was OK for a while, Barnabus just licking around Garfield's neck, all very innocent cat behavior. Then Barnabus positioned himself for something a little more, er, intimate. Garfield was not impressed. They weren't such good friends after that...
-
ROTFL! Oh god! That reminds me!
Ok, I also have a cat named Dax. (I'm a fan of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. So I named her after Jadzia Dax when she was born.) Before we could get her fixed, she when into heat 3 different times. Bunny, who is a orange short hair female and a daughter of Chaos, is the dominate cat in our house. Buffy, who's the only tom, is just to damn laid back. When Dax went into heat she would come onto Bunny. It didn't matter that Bunny was female, she was the dominate cat, and Dax was just going by instinct after all. Bunny would freak. Now Dax is a very quite cat, she'll peep when she wants human food, and when you step on her she meows, but when she was in heat, she made this beautiful trilling sound. Mom was kinda sorry to have to get her fixed, 'cause she hasn't made that sound since.

(PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT)
Never, ever buy box turtles from pet stores, or any other type of turtle for that matter. They are wild caught animals and have a greater risk of carrying dormant illnesses that can be spread to you and other reptiles. This wild capture also decimates the natural wild population.
Now that I'm done with my Steve Irwin impression. Oh, wait, here comes another.
WHAT A LITTLE BEAUTY!
ahem. A few years ago we felt sorry for some pet store box turtles and we bought them. When we brought them home they infected some of our other turtles(despite an extensive quarantine) . Most of them didn't make it. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif Blue was a captive bred turtle, but we think the tank conditions killed him because he was so small.

Monticello (Monti) the box turtle
Samoa (Sammy) the box turtle

~growls at Mit~ No insulting my cats! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/tongue.gif
Anyway we had a dog too. Her name was Skeeter, she and one of my other cats named Tiger, were very close. I swear the dog thought she was a cat and vice versa. Tiger could jump fences. He would be down the block, you yell "kitty, kitty" and he'd come running up the street and jump over our fence. Bunny, can climb fences. She'll climb the trelis we have and sit on the top of the door frame. She'll also climb down the trelis. Skeeter was hit by a car one night, she died, one of the neibor's told me the next morning and moved her out of the street for us.

Mousey-Mouse, we had a little snapper named Chub, and oddly enough we took him for walks too! (We let him go in a small stream b/cause snappers do poorly in captivity) In fact, all of our turtles get walks. They are really good at hiding and digging in under mulch and grass. They are also really good climbers.
I bet Fred found some small pond and he's busy terrorizing children's fingers! CHOMP!

BlueElfEars, I'm so sorry to hear about your turtle. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif I haven't been around the past couple of days because I had a few tests that I had to study for. I, too, once had a turtle. He was a snapping turtle named Fred. I used to take him for walks (yes, walks, I walked the dog, so why not my turtle...hey, I was seven, ok?). One day, I had him out in the backyard, and my mother called me into the house for a second. I was sure that Fred would be ok, him being a turtle and all, I thought he wouldn't really go anywhere. I was wrong. I left him alone for less than 3 minutes, and he was gone. Our backyard is BIG and at the time only had a couple trees in it, so nowhere for a turtle to hide. I called out a search party consisting of all the neighborhood kids and their parents. Noone found a trace of him, not even a shell. To this day, I have no idea what happened to him. Hopefully he's in turtle heaven, with Blue now.

Speaking of snaping turtles....
Okay, my step dad and some of his friends were in San Marcos (which is a town north of me.) and they decided to go tubing down the river. They got tire tubes and drinks and set off down the river. One of the girls saw a stream of bubbles traveling upriver towards them, and freaked. "Butts in the air!" she yelled.
My stepdad didn't know why she did this, but he was willing to do whatever the girls wanted to do after enough of those drinks.
He balanced on his inner tube in such a way that none of him was in the water. So did everyone else... but not his friend Bob.
Bob asked why. She said "See the bubbles? That means a snapping turtle! Do you want to get bit?"
Bob laughed and said that no snapper would attack something bigger than itself.
That was when he screamed and jumped out of the water. A snapper the size of a hubcap had clamped down hard on his butt.
Everybody scrambled to the river bank and tried to get the turtle off of Bob's butt, but it was no good -- the turtle had clamped down hard enough to punch thru his skin and wasn't going to let go.
They tried whacking the turtle across the shell, and my stepdad ran to the car and got a tire iron. Hitting the turtle didn't do any good, and when they tried to pry the turtle's jaws open, it clamped down tighter and Bob was howling his butt off, so to speak.
A passerby in the park saw what was going on, and told them to get some gasoline and pour it in the turtle's mouth; that was the only way to make it let go.
They tried it with beer first, and that didn't seem to work, so they went and got some gas, and sure enough, when they splashed it in the turtle's mouth, the turtle let go and tried to bite everyone else; by then, they had it by the tail, though, and my stepdad threw it back in the river.
My stepdad says that to this day, Bob still has a triagle-shaped scar on his butt...

Hey! He liked the ladies too. Maybe. He was always getting his ass kicked by the neighborhood cats and now I have to wonder if it was because he was moving in on their babes or if he was going for them.
Garfield, the cat
Barnabus, the cat (MIA)
Persephone, the zebra finch
Nameless #1, the hamster
Nameless #2, the hamster
The hamsters were the classroom mascots in grade 4. We could never agree on names for them.
Poor Barney. We still don't know what happened to him. All they found was his tail... No, really. It must have been frozen off. It was already paralyzed due to an unfortunate encounter with a car so it probably didn't hurt him too much. I hope. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif
