Is anyone else suprised at how the nation has completely pulled together? With the exception of our own terrorists like Falwell everyone, even New Yorkers who have a stigma of being ass holes (no offense guys, I didn't give it to ya). The goverment's reaction does not suprise me, but patriotism in general among the citizens of our country is up a thousand percent. I can not even find a flag pin to wear because they sell out of Wal-Mart as soon as they get in. I know several of you are from other countries, I want to know mainly what the veiw was of our nation in your nation. And what it is now.
Positive and negative comments welcome.

seriously, though, New Yorkers may have a reputation of being loud-mouthed idiots who bicker amongst themselves a lot, but fuck with one of us and you fuck with ALL of us.....there have been plenty of times in the past where people have banded together during a crisis...i mean, look what happened 8 yrs ago the first time they tried to topple the WTC.....i was in another part of the City when that happened and when i got back home and turned on the news, i saw a buncha people rallying around each other, in shock and concerned for the injured and/or dead
people who live in Manhattan are tougher than the steel they're surrounded by, which is why they give off the idea they're hard people, but really, they have as much heart as anyone else....they'll just scream n bitch at you if you double park and box their cars in or honk way too loud n long outside their windows when they're trying to sleep *LOL*

Well to be honest, I think the whole world cares about the States, but the States don't give a fuck about the rest of the world. I mean, if a building would be bombed over here with hundreds of people in it, would the American people remember it with 3 minutes of silence? I don't think so. That is what really bugs me about America, their 'We are the world' attitude. Over here everyone cares about what happened. Ofcourse, I care too! People put flowers at the American HQ located in my town, Dutch flags are halfway on the pole and people feel guilty when they're having a moment of fun. But do you Americans know about which disasters happened here in the last few years? The boeing747 jumbojet that crassed into a whole block of flats? Or the fireworks disaster that destroyed a large area of houses? Or the new years disaster, when a fire broke out in a pub and lots of teenagers died in there because they was no way to get out? Did you Americans show your compassion with a minute of silence?
What also freaks me out now are the media. Example: last week the throne-prince (I don't know how else to call him) and his fiancee visited a village in the Netherlands. The newspaper wrote that it was unbelievable that there were kids having fun inspite of what happened. I mean; is it forbidden to have fun because of what happened in the States? Yes it is very VERY bad what happened, but there's a war somewhere every day, and every day people get murdered. Shouldn't it be forbidden to have fun EVERY day then? And why only when something happens in the States? Why don't have a minute silence when we get news about another kamikaze bomber who blew himself and others up in Israel? (because these attacks happen there almost every week lately). Why not have a minute of silence when people die in a major flood, or an earthquake?
I guess what I'm trying to say is: why does everyone act like America IS the world. It's not, it is a PART of the world. A big part of the world that doesn't know what the hell goes on in the rest of the world because they think their the only ones.

It's a good thing to see how the people of NY get together though, they will need eachother in these hard times. I wish people could be like that everywhere and all the time. I just wonder how long it will take before that brotherly love has disappeared.

Day-Z you are absolutly 100% right.
The thing about this is, most of it don't get broadcast on our local news. We don't know most of this. But of course, there's a lot of things your part of the world don't know about us. Offhand because I have no coffee, I cannot pull up my list, but there is.
Why the other terrorisim acts aren't seen as moments to pause is that before last week, 5% of our population knew that feeling of helplessness, and insecurity when innocent people can be snuffed out in an instant. To the american people, terrorisim is like Hollywood, so to speak. We're watching it from our TV screens, it's alien.
Not anymore. The cold water has been splashed in our faces, we're not invunerable. I think from this time forward, americans will be there for the other countries who suffer from terrorist actions. I really beleive this.

i wont get into things because i think i spoke enough about the american attitude to someone else on another board...but all i can say is not all americans are as closed minded as you think..and you cant judge all americans by its leaders...as you couldnt with any country...(and im sure most media in other countries dont show the outpour of concern from real goodhearted americans)
eXample...look at the leaders in the middle east...i think for the most part that the ppl are oppressed and they have to be the way they are or fear punishment....and even canada....before this becomes something that it shouldnt,i will say this has no bearings for judgement on its ppl,the leader,prime minister(jean chretien) wrote the "charter of rights"which states that no canadian is allowed to deport activists,terrorist criminals claiming refugee status...they are obligated and indeed compelled to protect,house,feed,and give medical care if needed to.and these chamber of rights can not be changed...do i judge the canadian ppl for this..hell no..they are some of the nicest ppl i have ever met. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gifand as i can see why ppl see america like this, because i have seen it, i'll say that if you lived here you would know how deep our hearts and pockets are....the minutes of silence thing..well your probably right but as far as disaster relief goes..we send hundreds of volunteers and our national guard to every major disaster everywhere..and on media stations we set up disaster relief funds for ppl of all nations....i agree this is a big wakeup call for america...we have a chance to change things..and a chance for humanity as well..we have a far way to go but as i have witnessed myself we are willing to try...its a shame that it takes americans as ppl of all over the world to face tradgedies to realize what really matters..
and what Leo said bout us new yorkers..its true....in a fast city like that there are ppl out there who take kindness as a weakness so you kind of have to put on your "poker face" so you are not taken advantage of..but as mean as we can get we can be just a sweet.

And Australia is the arse of the world because we turned away a boat load of illegal immigrants who claim that they were seeking asylum in Australia..
Didnt see any other country put their hand up to claim them..
Yes these people were from Afghanistan but our shores are being stampeded by these people who are trying to get into Australia via the so called back door..
And what illegal immigrants that are already here in camps are rioting..yeah right..good way to improve your chances of getting released into the general public..
A lot of people think that here in Australia we have all this open land and not many people..BUT and I stress BUT..our country is the driest in the whole world..we only have enough water to keep our population going and water rationing is very common in summer..Thats the reason why we dont live inland and stick to the coast..
But Im rambling on here..back to the topic at hand..
I like American people and my American friends are the best but I can see the bad side of America too..Some people call it patriotism and others call it ego..
Ive read a lot of responces this week and basically it all boils down to:
1) America is the #1 nation of the world..
2) All other nations have to follow America and live by American rules and if you dont..well you'll get bombed off the face of the planet..
3) American has to always save the world..
4) Might is right..because the Americans have the weaponry and the capability for mass distruction they MUST be right in everything they believe in..
Here in Australia..we're pretty laid back..we dont cause fights but we always seem to be dragged into them..We stick up for our friends..

DL has a point. Might not like it much, but the fact is: The world is held together by the US. We are always there to help other countries. Our win/lose record of war is pretty damn impresive. As for not hearing about some of the stuff in other countries: the media.

I bet he's in a tank. I could picture him behind the sights of one of those giant cannons, smiling, yelling "remember the towers" as he blows those Taliban bastards to hell.
In reality I bet he is terrified of what is coming and I hope he keeps his head down when the shooting starts, but I don't know who I pitty more.
If I wasn't married I probably would have joined on 9/12. I don't want to die or kill, but I feel like I should be doing more then I am. People have already asked me what I would do if they brought back the draft. I scare most of them when I say "If I am called I will go, but I hope it wont come to that." It scared them because most of them were joking of ways to keep themselves or their children out of the military, but I take things like that seriously.
I almost said that I hope he dosen't end up on the front line, but hell, I'm already on the "front line" in this war, so who am I to talk.
