If you didnt know, you'll know now that two of the biggest names in the videogaming industry have collaberated; Shigeru Miyamato and Hideo Kojima. They have decided to remake the original Metal Gear Solid for the Gamecube, featuring the obvious graphical improvements (surpassing that of MGS2's), and added features. The game is under work by Silicon Knights, who released Eternal Darkness.
Now, the reason why this is so signifigant; the best game on the playstation, which contributed towards its victory in popularity over N64, is now coming to the GC. The tables may well turn on Sony after the announcement that this is an exclusive title, much like the original was to the playstation. If you look back, it was Metal gear Solid (best game on PSX, arguably) which was being compared to Zelda : OoT (best game on N64, no argument). And now, the GC has both.
If Nintendo keep this attitude towards releasing what the sony fanboys want, only for the GC, there will be a lot of annoyed sony fanboys converting to nintendo, and so the GC will certainly be getting the popularity it deserves.

Man, i'm looking forward to Wiseman's reaction to this. I'm sure it will be the good old "MGS is overhyped crap with crappy graphics" arguement. And we all know he hasn't played much of the game.
Oh well, while it's a remake, it sounds pretty damn cool.
-
MGS was badass to play. I'll be looking forward to playing the remake on my friend's GC. However, I doubt this will turn the tables. Nintendo has themselves in the "kiddy trap" that is, people have made an impression of them, and they are gonna be stuck in it for a long while, one release won't fix it.
Sorry to those of you who are hopeful, but I doubt it will affect much in terms of power-struggling. Sony just has everyone in their ass-pocket, and with the games coming out on their console.. there isn't that much reason for people not to be. Some people are plain stuck in their ASSHOLE (*cough*FFfanboys*cough*), but really and logically, Sony is getting a lot of the best producers for their console, period. Star Ocean 2, Legend of Legaia 2, Xenosaga, who can deny it? Not too many.

I'm not interested on any MGS games (don't like the genre much, don't like the style much), but it's good news that the GC is getting games people wants.

Just quit bullshitting about me, will ya?
I DID play MGS, so shut the fuck up. And what's the problem if I didn't like it, huh? Am I a worse person, an evil dictator, or a fanboy, because I happened to not like it? Who's the one forcing opinions on people and badmouthing here?
IRT DR:

That's true, but people like me rely on facts. Once they release a handful nice adult-oriented games I'm interested on I'll be happy to reconsider buying a GameCube (regardless of what some ones say or think).

That's true. And you just named three games I'm buying.

aw man, that was really disappointing. Oh well. Maybe next time.
-
Nice! i hope Silicon knights are being supervised directly by Kojima-sama (like a lot his games, maybe that MGS not much, but other games done by him are cool, Snatcher, Policenauts, even the Tokimeki Memorial series are Kojima directed games...)
In my opinion, MGS had very good graphics, and used the PSX over its limits. If GC is goint to have this game, it is another good reason (as if there weren't...) to get a GC.
The only thing GC needs to reach the perfection is a Xeno game and a grandia II remake /second part... Will "Deus"/Granas/Valmar/Kosmos/Krelian or whoever hear my prays?
And if there is no God to pray for this, i'll make one with my own hands!
-
Typo on my part, I meant Star Ocean 3, Star Ocean 2 came out for the PSX years ago, lol :-)
Anyways, I personally liked MGS, but not because of the graphics or anything like that, but because I personally like that style of game. It just clicks with me very well.
And OCB, cut it out, you're coming across like a complete jackass.
-
IRT Wiseman, i really do think that the graphics in MGS2 were superb, so im at a disagreement with you there. Just my opinion though.
Perhaps the release of this game on GC wont turn the tables instantly, but if more popular 3rd party company's make their landmark titles for the GC, it certainly will increase in popularity over time. Though i doubt it will surpass the popularity of PS2, it will give them a very clear lead over the Xbox (which as statistics show, is unfortunately doing just as well as the GC right now).
-
I agree with the "unfortunately" part . Hopefully, the GC will reover from its current situation and be clearly ahead of the xbox again.
But Nintendo needs great RPGs if they want to face sony. And by "great RPGs" I mean Xenosaga, Star Ocean 3 or Suikoden 3 type stuff.
Namco is currently focusing more on RPGs; they should try to get them to make more GC RPGs; not a cel-shaded Tales game (which doesn't look bad but it doesn't look so great either, plus it's only one game), but the real thing, i.e. an assload of RPGs including THE saga, some Tales games, less popular RPGs like Venus & Braves, etc.
They should also go for Square; the GC FF game in the works is original and looks great, but I bet fanboys will say it's not a real FF (because it doesn't have a Roman number after the name). To make fanboys interested on the GC, they should try to get Square to release Final Fantasy 12, 13, 14 or whatever number they are at on GameCube, as well as other Square RPGs. The games may suck, it isn't important, all they need is to have the name "Square" big and clear in the box. This is to attract fanboys, of course; hardcore gamers will demand real good RPGs, and the ones getting released on PS2 are good examples of these.
-
Sometimes, things have to adapt and change.
This is something that Nintendo doesn't seem to be doing very much. It stays with the same old, same old. This may be a bit of a refreshment, but they need more than just a bottled water, they need to go jump in a frickin' lake.
I mean, we've seen Square team up with Disney, Link looks like a fucking a Saturday Morning cartoon, Sega has fallen from its former glory, and we've seen Metroid as a FPS. Things just change sometimes. And Nintendo needs to change their game-plan, and get some more 3rd party games on their console with some recognition. They obviously HAVE the hardware, the GC is powerful as hell, but they just decline to using it to its fullest extent for some reason that seems to be too smart for me to figure out.

First thing first: MGS screenshots look amazing.
Now, i don't agree with DR. Nintendo is keeping fresh, on the Gamecube at least. They've been a bit remake happy for the GBA.
They only changed the graphics in Zelda because the gameplay system is already brillant. They made Metroid a FPS as they wanted it to be different to third person adventure, which is Zelda. When you think about it, most of Nintendo's games have a massive, important difference in them. Who cares if they don't have third party support? But they do, the gamecube has tons of third party support.
-
IMO, Nintendo is innovating on everything they shouldn't, and they are not innovating on everything they should, most of the time.
As for the GBA, that console is basically a SNES remaking platform. Their problem, but one thing is for sure: I'm not paying full price for the games I had for years.
Come to think of it, it's true that most of the games in some of their sagas, except those released on GBA, are innovative in some way, but they are lacking RPGs, serious and seriously long games. I was too hard in the first paragraph.
And you can't say it's enough with their stuff so you don't need third parties, what if I don't like most or all of their games? And I'm not buying a console for 5 or 6 games... They have decent third party support, but they really should try to make Namco, Square/Enix and the others to develop serious RPGs for the system which is totally lacking in this area, the PS2 is getting them all and all they do is this new Zelda...
-
Golden Sun And Golden Sun:TLA Are reasons enough for GBA.
You should get ahold of those two games, through ROMs or GBA, they're on my top 10 list of RPGs actually.
-
Amen Xellos, SNES can't do Goden Sun as GBA does, also, Doom on Snes required a graphics accelerator (Chip FX), and it only did the walls, while on GBA Doom runs on its own, and the graphics looks better, (having textures also floors and ceilings)
Besides, GBA has very high graphics capabilities, including real time video decompresion (other thing is that GBA games have very little memory to do videos ), Example, Love Hina Advance.
Mode 7 on Snes was limited to 1 sprite/surface/scroll plane, in GBA can be done to any sprite. Example, Any Sonic Advance.
The point is a thing that always happens, programmers are some lazy buns who don't give a damm for optimizing or improving, given the case that GBA is superior on almost any characteristic to Super nes. (but resolution, 320x224 on SNES vs. 240x160 on GBA)
-
The GBA is an overall better hardware, but the difference is minimal, as the SNES had better res and 0wnz the GBA in sound (sound quality on most GBA games sucks ass). And don't come out with the "you can do better sound on GBA" stuff, because if you do that, you won't have much CPU time left for game and graphics. The SNES sound system owns Genesis, NeoGeo, SMS, GG, Lynx, GB, GBC, GBA, TurboGrafx-16, 32X, TurboCD, NeoGeo CD and SegaCD (except for AudioCD/long digital audio files). And I'm proably missing some systems.
Even so, I don't think they are enough for me to buy the console. I havent' seen much of them but they don't see that special; Tales of Phantasia is more interesting IMO.
AFAIK, the GBA does not support hardware Mode 7, all is done in software, and it may in fact do more than a plane. I'm not discussing the GBA power, I think it's enough for now. I'm talking about *GAMES*, it doesn't have enough NEW, interesting games to play.

But after playing Golden sun, and comparing it with other SNES games, i think that it has the same quality when it comes to sound, and playability.
Thoguh, is normal that SNES has a better sound system, GBA is intended to be simple sound system for it is a portable console.
But sound samples in GBA sounds pretty nice, and doesn't "have arguments" with complex graphics effects
-
Same quality? That's not possible. I've listened to it, and it's not even 1/4 as good as the sound quality of any top-100 SNES game.
Samples in GBA are played at very low freqs or mixed with poor mixing quality, while they are clear enough in the SNES.
-
Nintendo have made a lot of RPGs, the only problem is they are idiots and decide not to release them here, along with half of their games. Dammit! I wanna play Fire Emblem and Custom Robo and that Starfish platformer.
-
Fucking idiots (not only them, pretty much everyone reserve some games for Japan only, so they can feel superior or something like that).
-
Fire Emblem's another awesome sries. Sadly,l I'v eplayed all of em untranslated. T_T So I have no idea on the plots >_<
-
I hate it when they do that! unless the game is very very badm they should release it world wide, and not only in Japan!
-
Great news! Fire Emblem is coming out in the US and probably Europe. Now for the rest of the games...

If you havent seen the trailer for MGS:TT, then i strongly recommend that you do so. The trailer includes samples of all the new voice acting, and shows off what they've done with the graphics, and more importantly, their direction. It'll be worth your time i assure you.

Edit: I've seen it! ^^ is really cool! is nice that NGC has metal gear Solid 1, now they should do a MGS2 remake on Game Cube also, and it would be perfect.

Yeah! XD It looked so amazingingingingly good, everything i hoped for and more from what ive seen. Graphics are going to get better by before its release at christmas, which is certainly exciting since they are already up to MGS2 standard. Im pleased with the voice acting aswell, except that Naomi now sounds american, which isnt right...but other than that they improved the Ninja's voice in my opinion, and kept the rest.
If they remake MGS2, they absolutely MUST revise the storyline, make it integrate with MGS to a greater degree, create some more realistic plot twists, and just generally improve it, lol. Sorry, i didnt like MGS2 that much...
-
And a nice thing in MGS voice acting:
Liquid Snake: Cam Clarke (Ryuudo)
Cornel Campbell: Paul Eiding. (Mareg)
-
-
Even the Spanish dubbed version had a really good voice acting. Seems that konami wanted it to have areally good sound.
-
-
Though it took more time for it to be released, and MGS2 didn't had the dubbing in Spanish.
