Even the bin price of 400$ is nice! They say all original, but I?d still want to see the drivers before I handed over the cash.
Unfortunately for me Duluth is 6 hours from me, and my wife is not an understanding person when it comes to speakers:D
for 400$ good deal. if you live in Georgia.
I asked the seller for some pics of the speakers with the backs removed. I had forgotten these have 420 woofers. :D
420s and a tweeter. great looking cabinets though.
During a week day it's ~10 min. away, though with the holiday shopping, who knows? Anyway, tried contacting 'them', but epay said server down. No tweeters shown. Noticed only two bolts holding the drivers! Where does it say $400 BIN?
GM
The BIN went away when some big spender placed the 90 dollar minimum bid.
Since they are the "A" version, they should have 420-Y's with the coaxially mounted tweeter.
Too bad they're not late 420-8B models and a lot closer to me.
Do 420-B have the same frame/motor as the 416-B or are the motors slightly different?
I think we have already discussed that the 420a is the same frame/motor as a 416a. And the 420Y is just a 420a with the bracket for the tweeter on the front?
Yeah I was thinking since those were the same motor as 416a, that the 420b would have the same motor as 416b.
How do you like the 420b compared to the 420a Phil?
I assume that apart from the cone and foilcal, all else is the same as 416B.

I need to keep an eye out for some blown 420B so I can get me some cheap 416-8B:cool:
The real ones are going for too much money.
I want to build some Model 19 but use Emilar Bowtie horns in place of the 811
Here's a good hi res shot showing the litz wires connecting the tweeter, and the famous Callins wax sealed cap.

Is that cap the only crossover network for the tweeter?

Same cap and terminal strip you'd find mounted to the baffle next to the tweeter in an 879A Santana, that's all there is.
Very nice Phil!
Love to see examples preserved in that condition.
An interesting ditty, the 420A came in both frames and regardless which one they had the same 32371 part number.
BTW, the 420-8B doesn't have a magnet cover either. What you see is the return pot itself, cast steel, one piece.
On the older rear mount woofers it seems like the bar that runs across to hold the tweeter would cause the woofer not to seat completely to the baffle. Does it just kind of squish itself into the gasket?
I've never dissected one. But, if you google an image search you will find a good res image of a Pair of 420Y that somebody replaced the accordion surround with what looks like LE-15 foam.
When they did the re-surround they re-installed the mounting bars rotated one mounting bolt hole position from where they were originally. The indentations where the gasket compressed around the bar are clearly visible.

Re: the bracket- I mean, that works, but it seems kind of sloppy:D
I’ve never seen someone replace the accordion surround on an Altec (not 411 of course) with a foam surround. Was that a thing people did?
The speakers ended at 142.51$. Someone got a good deal
I had to look up the Madrid.
So in reality, prev version of the Santana.
$141 great price!
I use my Santana’s in my TV system. Tube amps of course.
They actually have the 420-8B in them. Found them on CL for $200 and the guy delivered them to boot.
Sometimes we get lucky

Yeah, they were tempting at the price if it stayed a good bargain for just the cabs since I'd sell the drivers, but I won't have a 'safe' place to store them at home for awhile yet, so didn't bid. Frankly, figured he wouldn't sell this cheap, giving me some time to secure a local 'freebie' space, then see what kind of deal I could make. Twas not to be, like the pristine pair of Valencias less cabs for $75 when I turned around to answer some's DIY speaker Q at the 2000 Atlanta DIY speaker/Swap Meet. Major bummer. :(
GM
I have, if not identical, a similar pair I need to do something with one of these days.
The speakers are relisted now. Same 90$ starting bid and 400$ bin. I wonder what fell through on the deal. Maybe the seller wanted to get more money for them
Sometimes enthusiastic buyers do not consider the size or transportation requirements. Should have seen the face on my wife when I wheeled some battered, gutted Altec Magnificent cabs into the garage....... Might have been a very fast return trip, with nothing to do with the functionality of the speakers : )))
It’s been my experience that the second time around usually the item goes for less money. It’s good if you’re a buyer, and bad if you’re the seller.
What type of clocks are you into Bowtie? Ive always wanted to get into pocket watches, but don’t really know where to start
Posted "Update again: I have to relist these because the out-of-state buyer could not make it here. Again, these are for local pickup only! Thanks."
After a little research, $250 seemed a fair price, but then realized that these are Santana size cabs, which are too small [~3.4 ft^3 net] for my needs. :(
GM
GM, Offer him the same 90 bucks he already sold them for and go pick them up. I'm pretty sure the 931-12 will fit in the cabinet, then you can drive to Danley and get a sub and have a modern system. I know it's no A-4 but the results will surprise you!
I?m not sure why more people don?t use Uship. I haven?t bought speakers that way, but a few people I have sold speakers to have used them. They said it was a lot cheaper than using one of the big freight companies.
I was considering these cabs to put my PAS coax drivers in, but the wife doesn?t like the lattice grills. I asked her how she feels about soffit mount speakers then :D
