Tim Burton's new film Planet of the Apes The best film of the year so far? What did you think.
So which of you buggers didn't go just because it is a remake of a classic and got slated in the reviews?

SF is my preferred genre too
I thought this version of Apes was fairly good, paying homage to the original and to the book.
Have to say that the ending confused the fsck out of me though ... I guess that's time anomalies for you!
It will end up in my DVD collection next to The Phantom Menace ;-)

I thought it was quite poor.
Mark Wahlberg is staggeringly bad. Not so much wooden as finest mahogany. None of the relationships within the movie are explored at all. The ending is truly dire. The movie has no heart at all. It was also utterly humourless.

Glad you have a sense of humour Mr Spoon ;-)
IMHO it's a movie about a relationship with power and keeping the masses dumbed-down to enable easy manipulation and thus stay in power. On this level it stays true to the original film.
Also, although the ending was a bit confusing, it was bold, and it had the apes as being as technologically advanced as modern day humans, as per the original book. I thought that was a nice touch. Still a contraversial ending for people who see it, but for different reasons.
I liked the symbololgy in it (if there is such a word), how symbols develop over generations and their meanings are lost.
I'm not saying it's a great movie, but it is a worthy movie, certainly better than Sleepy Hollow IMO. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it, possibly because I had such low expectations.
Acting and judging quality thereof is subjective - nothing stuck out in my mind as particularly bad acting although I know it's popular to slate Walberg or whatever his name was.

It wasn't horrible. But it wasn'tgood or even decent. It has a little visual style and didn't put you to sleep. The ending was intresting but so obviously there to leave the series open to yet another sequel. I think Skin was being nice when he said Wahlberg was finest mahogany. Let's just say some of the ape extras acted better.

First off I am a huge fan of tim burton and I think his films are great, and on a side note...miker I don't see how you think POTA is better than sleepy hollow, personaly i think sleepyhollow is a great film. But anyway being a Tim Burton fanatic, i was disapointed with POTA, not from the directing stnad point but the story itself was poorly written...i get the feeling not a lot of time was put into it. But visualy it was a great film.

Hey there.
I thought this movie was piss poor. Bret Ratner could have made this movie and it would have looked the same. It was like Burton Lite. It had none of his style in there.(which usualy make even his bad movies worth watching). The script was terrible. The story made no sense and that ending was a joke.
I think this was just a pay check for Burton. It was a rush job. Im betting the next movie we see from him will be a much smaller personal film. He made a cash cow movie for the studio now he will make one for himself. I hope this is the case anyway. Because if this is a sample of whats to come from Burton he should quit now.
Despin out.

I would agree that POTA does not stand out as a 'Tim Burton' film visually, to that I ask so what?
Sleepy Hollow I would agree looked great, but so what, I hated the windmill and the way the story just fell apart and made you realise you were watching a film (ie the realisation that you are a willing participant in a mediated experience)
Anyway, looks like I'm definitely outnumbered on POTA, but that doesn't change my opinion of it. I mean, was Heston really that good in the original?! The POTA story is what keeps it engaging, not the acting, not the visual style, not who directed it, but the story. Although it's a fair bet that Pierre Boulle hates Burton's version too.

IMHO - good art direction, sets, lighting, costumes but, unfortunately, EVERYTHING else about it was absolutely dire. A very weak film.

In my humble opinion Sleepy Hollow is the best film ever adapted from "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". That being said every other film about the Headless Horseman was either animated or looked like the Horseman had pulled his head down inside his shirt.
Burton is a great director. His earlier works were funny and original, even Sleepy Hollow was quite original and even funny at times. But over the years Burton has lost somthing POTA could have been made by any number of two-bit no-name directors and looked almost no different.
BTW was I the only one who noticed that looming scarecrow-like thingie that appears in so many of Tim's films? (The staircase ornament in Edward Scissorhands, the scarecrow in Sleepy Hollow and the marker for the sacred place in POTA)

I watched the origional version on television a few years ago and really enjoyed it, however, when i saw the adverts fro the recent version, i was put off entirely.
The apes where made out to be villainous barbarians that deserved killing off, the cliches(even in the adds) were too much. It seemed to me to be another film re-written by the cia to again make humans the heroes of the day, history, universe.
no i did not see it, i may be way out of line i will admit, but my summary usually ends up correct when i do see bad films.
------------------
-
In the original and in the remake the breakdown is thus (sweeping generalisations but it is just a movie):
Gorillas- warlike, power hungary
Chimps- peace loving, sympathetic
Orangutan- aristocrats, politicians
Humans- the exploited, the slaves, the victims
Frankly I can't see what all the fuss is about. The original may have a been a milestone for various reasons, and the whole series, with its declining budgets on each film, are strangely addictive. The remake, made by Burton with virtually none of the constraints of the original series still stands in my mind as film worth watching.
It's said that people won't be talking about Burton's version in 30 years time. That may be true, I think it will stand as a hidden gem that few will find, but when they do they will realise it is still a reflection of the times of when the film was made (when taken in context of the current events of the time), and how little had really changed since 1968 - indeed how human attitudes rarely changed except when viewed between millenia of evolution.

A remake, or a "reimagined" of anything should not be judged by it's predicesor. On that note, I thought the new POTA was alright, nothing spectacular. Especially with the predictable outcomes. As many of you have already said, it was poorly writin.

Good music, I thought, but what more could you expect from Danny Elfman
Poor old Lisa Marie though, being dumped for Ms Bonham Carter.
