Ok. This is nothing related to the WTC and if it offends anyone please say so.
However, I've been working on a disaster movie for sometime and perhaps some of you would like to come forward and help me out a little. Down at Anarchy Pictures we're always striving on original ideas and we think we've hit one.
The film, with no title yet, we've dubbed it "Slowing Down" is all about the times before, during and after the world stops rotating.
You can imagine what would happen. We're moving at 50,000mph or something, if we stopped rotating, kabang, we'd fly. Buildings would crumble and fly, everything, except maybe planes. Perhaps they'd reach the speed of light? Weird, but thats not the point.
So, my questions. If the earth did stop, surely there would be no gravity, right? And surely everything would fly and crumple and be destroyed, right?
What would happen to the sea?
Any other comments? I'll get back to you with more questions after I get some replies. IF anyone wants to help with this project, let me know on this thread.
Cheers guys,

Ermmmmm,
Last time I checked, gravity is produced by huge amounts of mass and not rotation. Therefore apart from huge ecological changes, not that much would happen. The moon doesn't rotate, but that doesn't bugger off anywhere. We're clamped in by the sun's gravity so spinning or not, we ain't goin' nowhere fast.
Me think you need to think of a better scenario for disaster. But, saying that some einstein spod may prove me wrong, but me dont fink so!
An idea I had was that if you want some kind of really strange disaster movie is that you could have a larger mass than our sun enter our solar system and completely re-align all of our planets, but as you can imagine, the smoke was green on that one and details seem to have faded - damnit!

Yes, the rotation of the earth has nothing to do with gravity.
However since everything has an inertia if the earth were to stop spinning there would be huge tidal waves, volcanoes would erupt, buildings would collapse, people would fall over, the weather would change globally, it may even cause an ice age.

Well, it does depend on how quick the earth stopped spinning. If we're talking over 100 years then we'd probably get bigger tides but nothing hugely catastrophic. But if the world was to stop spinning in a couple of minutes (but how!!???) yes, the scenario would be a little bit different.

Perhaps if something did enter the solar system and cancelled out the sun, so there was amn equal gravitational pull to the sun and this other "object" the earth would become static and therefore stop it from rotating.
I'm also puzzled as to how to get the earth to slow down pretty instantly.
Perhaps, a large bomb? No, that wouldn't do it. It would probably have to be something to do with space. A huge space wind or something.
Jeez, if you can think of something i'd be damn greatful http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

an experiment on earth creates a vortex in the centre of the earths core, which acts like a whirlpool. This vortex is spinning in the opposite direction to the earth and so cancels out the natural spin of the earth, perhaps even causing it to spin the opposite direction.

Scientists in America are doing experiments with ion collison. If we study explosions like that under controlled circumstances we might understand the "big bang" that caused the bierth of the cosmos. Apparently therew is a slight chance that this could cause what is known as a "black hole"
With that limted knowledge I wrote a stupid story for my 11th grade english class, my teacher bought it anyway.

What about if they send astronauts up to space, on some kind of mission. then earth stops spinning, they come back down somehow and everything is different. could make a better story.

Have the best of both worlds.
A planet passes through the solar system (propelled by a star that exploded) and not only does it's gravity tear on the world but it also quickly slows and eventually stops the earth rotating.
For the record, we aren't held onto the Earth by the Suns gravity as someone said. We're held on my Earths gravity and the Suns gravity stops us spinning off into space.

But we can conclude that if earth did stop rotating (I like the idea above) then everthing would fly around.
Oh, and hows this for a name?
"Static Fear"
For the guy that said about some guys going to space and coming back and its all different...nice idea but, not in the realms i'm thinking of. I'm just going to have a bunch of under-graduate guys and gals that figure out whats going to happen and confirm it with an astronomer and then have to warn everyone. Deep Impact style, not everyone listens and stay in the cities and therefore everyone goes flying.
However, as the speed reduction only lasts a few minutes, being in the air is a solution. Well, wouldn't it be?
After it all stops, one side of the earth is cold and in darkness, the other side is in the sun and warm. This would also be correct yes?
It's still a devloping idea. Still looking for a team and ideas. Keep posting, its cool to finally see one of my posts get more than 2 replies http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif

So you're saying there would be no atmosphere? No clouds or anything would exist anymore? :/
I guess this means very few people would survive, but, what about the sunset/sunrise lands... perhaps survivors could strive to find them as they're not to hot and not too cold.

I think you maybe referring to my comment. I was making a statement about the earth not losing it's orbit of the sun like the moon doesn't go anywhere from us in a hurry, not us being clamped to the earth, but the earth clamped to the sun.

But surely, looking at other posts in this thread, it wouldn't fly off into space? A building would just smash up and crumble horizontally (this is *sooo* hard to explain) and crumble over the floor.
Hmmmm, example. Imagine an egg and spoon race, and u stop suddenly. The egg keeps going but falls to the ground.
Kind of like that, i think.

It's gonna be one of those things that people will leave the film discussing with their friends (which is a very good thing). If it's all done well enough and explained, even incorrectly using our theories, then the audience will buy into it. Just like the science in Jurassic Park.
Some more thoughts... The Earth say spins left, so when it slows down all the buildings would fall left (like when you break hard in a car). But, whatever huge force pulls the Earth right to stop it spinning would also pull the buildings right. I think they would effectively 'burst'.
Just another point I thought you might be able to incorporate. The same side of the moon always faces Earth because it travels and rotates the same speed as the Earth rotates. So if something changed the Earths (and moons) orbit we could see the other side. Just a thought.

If the earth stopped revolving, it would do everyone's heads in!
The seas would flood the land on the moon side (moons gravity)
The sun side would bake, the dark side would freeze.
If it was sudden, everything would be flung into space, as escape velocity is far less than 17,000 mph(or whatever the spin speed of earth is). Take a car crash. The speed of a crash test dummy through the windscreen is almost that of the car before it hits the wall. Now imagine a house suddenly having 17kmph of force exerted on it - it'd go flying!
cheers

What is the reason for the earth to suddenly stop rotating (and would it also stop orbiting the sun?) Gravity is a totally seperate issue and is caused by the mass of the earth (the closer you get to the earth's core, the slower time runs. If you go up in a plane, time runs more quickly).
I don't believe that if the earth suddenly stop rotating there would be any "disaterous" effects down here (such as buildings falling). Our atmosphere protects us from the realities of outer space. The fact is we are rotating, orbiting the sun, and travelling through space all at the same time.
Can't see anything much changing with the suns, except the tides would be alterted. AFter all, the moon would still be orbiting the earth and the gravity from the moon and sun is what causes the tides.
------------------
-
Right i've had a chat with my physics teacher and he's explained quite a bit to me.
1) If standing on the equator, you are effectivly travelling at 1000mph. If standing on the north pole, you are effectivly spinning much much slower. Therefore consequences on the Equator would be much more disasterous.
2) Anywhere thats travelling over 100mph would have effect, its like one big earthquake. Buildings are made to withstand such huge forces. However, because people are much lighter, we would fly across the room and smash into the walls before the building itself came down. This will make some good shots http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
3) There is a lot of friction involved. Also, gravity will still exist, and even though everything would "shift" in one direction, it will still come to the ground as would a ball thrown forwards, it curves down because gravity pulls it down.
4) The sea, and water, will effectivly do the same as carrying, for example, a bucket of water. When you stop suddenly, it slops over the edge of the bucket. It would do this, "slop" over the land. Some tidal waves may be formed, depending on the depth of the sea. So if you haven't crumbled your going to get wet.
Roads, rail and stuff would peel off (I believe). This film is going to be very interesting to make. Still none of you want to help lol. That's ok. Some bluescreening, model making and live action stunts will be pulled off.
Yes, I think that leaving the audience with a question as to whether its possible or not is good. Involving the audience is always good, as is leaving them with narrative enigmas.
Anything else to say? Where would you rather be? In a building, under the ground of in the air??
Oh, hows about the tagline, any suggestions?

Is your physics teacher absolutely sure about this? If you are travelling on a ferry and you jump up in the air, you land in the same place as you when you jumped. Even though the boat has moved forwards while you were in the air, you still land in the same place. I think our gravational field and atmosphere would play a part in averting a major disaster.
------------------
-
Sorry Mods, forgot about the friction thing.
Did your teacher mention the effects on the atmosphere?
I know about the boat thing. at the moment you jump in the air, you are travelling at the same speed as the boat. As you have no forward thrust and friction in the atmosphere slows you down, your momentum decreases. The boat keeps working against friction to maintain its momentum, so you land in a different place. However, because you can't jump very high, the differences in inertia aren't noticable. It's different in an enclosed vehicle because the air inside also has the same momentum as it.
Oh, I don't know!

So the earth isn't a sphere, it's a squashed
sphere, fatter at the equator?
And if I take my scales and weigh myself at
the north pole I'll be heavier than at the
equator? (Since at the equator there is more
centralpetal (sp) force, like holding on to
the edge of a roundabout at a park.)
Or since the squashing effect you are further
away from the centre of mass at the equator
so you should weight less than at the north
pole where you are closer to the centre of
mass of the earth?
So if the earth did stop spinning, all the
people who signed up for weight watchers at
the equator would be in for a big shock. Not
the biggest effect granted, but you might
want to focus on the personal side in the
film. :-)

I agree with the last statement.
Photorealisticly showing the planet going to hell is small change compared to the dialog of the situation and the interaction of the individuals involved as a result of said event.
If the emotion and dialog are there the audience will put up with a chunck of foam rubbber on a string to give a feeling of what is the genisis of the human interaction.
Window dressing is nice but "The Cold Equasions" I believe is the title. cuts to the bone of human relations in a hostile enviornment.

Thanks for that last post, can you re-write it in lamens terms? LoL. Deep meanings in my movies aren't all that important to me yet, lol.

The latest massive natural end the world type disaster predicted as far as I have heard has something to do with the sun. either a solar flair or some magnetic disturbance. This is science fact.
What are the predominante emotions before during and after the event.
Fear that things will get worse.
Hunger is there enough food
medication both for pain and to fight infection.
Where is..... he has been gone for hours
is the end a given or is there some hope of survival.
if you can track down a book called ICE about how a new ICE age comes about in a matter of weeks it is worth READING COVER TO COVER.
The rest is just smoke and mirrors.
Radiation ohhh latex and lots of it.
An Earthquake (Carefully and firmly) suspend your camera from a stiff spring or two.
A window being blown out from an explosion baby powder, face powder, balsa wood tossed inside.
What was the question again?

Now you can ask about what would happen if the world stopped spinning, in the film you'll just tell it, it doesn't have to be right, just fit the reality created in the film.
I'd love to help but man it's gonna be a mammoth task. Can you pull it off?

Hi
I will try to answer by inserting comments into you questions. Hope this works!!!!
1) What could cause the Earth to stop rotating? So far, the far fetched
theory is that debris from a super-nova could pass through our galaxy or
solar system
It always is ? the Crab Nebula was the last to go and its radiation etc is still going though us (you & me included!)
, and its gravitational pull cancels out that of the suns
sun much too near ant therefore its effect great ? remember the inverse square law?
and
thus pulls the Earth to a standstill as it passes. Is this pheasable? We
need to have something that would cause the Earth to stop spinning in a
matter of minutes thus causing destruction http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
Problem is the Earth is not solid. What do you think if the braking effect stopped the outer crust, and the rest carried on spinning? Try spinning a fresh egg on the table and then put your finger on it for a couple of seconds to stop it ? THEN LET GO. That shoud give you some ideas.
Even if an alien ray stopped the outside I think the egg effect would occure.
2) What kind of person would study the rotation of the Earth? A
geo-physicist? Perhaps just an astronomer? Not sure on this one.
Astronomers not interested in the Earth?s motion really (idiots) so geo-physists.
3) a- If the Earth remained still, would one side burn in the heat of the
sun and the other side freeze in the cool of the night? And, what would the
"sunset" areas be like? Would they be plush and safe to live?
Yes ? like the moon. No sunsets and one side probably ?273 degrees C other melt steel. I would not like to be on either.
b- If the Earth were to stop, and then proceed to spin in the opposite
direction, what would be affected? Or would everything regain and be as it
is now?
How long did evolution take? I may be old but I don?t think I would be around to see things get back to normal.
c- Finally, in the even of earth stopping rotating, where would it be
safest? In the air or underground? And, if in the air, travelling in a
plane, if the earth below stopped spinning would u suddenly be travelling at
a much greater speed, like 100,000 mph apposed to 1,000 mph?
See earlier ?egg? bit. Re plane ? I don?t think the wings would stay on! And where would you land?
Better be on out Moon colony and watch it from there, but watch out for all the flying debris!!!!!!!
Jon.

Your physics teacher may need to go back to school because you travel at the same speed in the North Pole as anywhere else in the world. If you did travel slower in the northern and southern parts of the world then they would have to shift in relation to the parts in the middle by a few thousand miles a year and traveling North or South would be impossible.

Painter,
Imagine ur a plate spinner guy. The center of the plate may be rotating at the same rate but not the same speed. For example, say u placed a pen mark on the edge of the plate and one in the middle.
The mark on the edge of the plate would pass your face much faster than that of the one in the middle of it, which would trundle by.
