Following Matt's most under rated film question, is mine who is the most over rated actor for example , Adam Sandler(total pants)
The entire cast of "Friends" (They should be
shot)
John Travolta.(twat)
Gwyneth Paltrow(Annoying, but not in the same way that the "Friends" cast are)
Robin Williams(Funny at first, sadly not any
more though.)
The entire cast of Titanic(IIIICCEE-BERRRG!
Cor blimey GUVnor!)
More to come, when I can remember half of
Holywood.
Tom Hanks.
But he may not be overrated as a person http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
Jack Nicholson.
Sure, he *was* great (and I mean GREAT). Now he's just a loud egomaniacal twat who hasnt been in a single half decent story for years, and just plays - ooh dangerous sexy post-middle aged men.
Any actor who plays the same character all the time and gets oscars and millions of dollars for it is over rated.
Come on Adam Sandler, lets have some more hate people.
Tom Cruise, as the main character. As a supporting character he seems to be do a lot better. Interview, magnolia, Taps. But his recent stuff is just not inspiring
There's a huge difference between an "actor" and a Hollywood "movie star".
Matt, I know what you mean about Keanu Reeves (he is a "movie star", no where near an actor) - although come to think of it - I do love all of his movies!?!?
I've been watching some of these extra feature things on DVDs, the last one (End of Days) the everyone was saying "how good an actor Arnie Schwarzenegger was"... huh?
How do that work? all he knows is Guns-n-Explosions...?
Most of these Hollywood "actors" don't act, then are just putting themselves in a situation (like the cast of Friends).
I like Jack Nicholson. He may do the same kind of roles but he does them well.
He is over rated if you put it like that though.
I like Tom Hanks too.
Keanu Reeves. He might not be highly rated as an actor but he is over rated as a star. I don't think he has any star quality at all. (apart from the lady appeal)
I think some people can make a film good even if they are not the best actors. Presence and charisma can be a substitute for not so good acting. But it can't make up for awful acting. IMHO
YAY - someone else who HATES Adam Sandler like I HATE him! BWAHAHAHA...*ahem*
hate that guy! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
Schwatzenager - hmmm...very very bad actor, but somehow charming? "end of days" was El Crappo
Errr...any of those big meat-head actors - Van Dam, blah blah there are sooo many!
I can't seem to think of any 'big' actresses I hate at the moment (strange)
Kalista Flockart? ....give me time
I think Tom Cruise is desperately poor and a thoroughly rotten actor. In Magnolia for instance he was surrounded by actors giving fantastic performances e.g. Macy, Reilly, Baker Hall, who he really had no right being on the company of and he still come out getting all the plaudits. I don't want to think that hiring him was 'just' a cynical marketing ploy to ensure some bums on seats, but having seen the film several times it is hard to think otherwise.
Honourable mentions to Kornmeisters Kevin Costner and Tom Hanks.
Tom Hanks is definately over-rated. His 2 oscar roles were just 2 characters hollywood felt like empathizing with that year, not great acting ! Good roles yeah ! Now Harvey Keitel is an actor !!! To me he becomes the character, he fits in comfortably in any role in his films.
Worst actors???
KATIE HOLMES: I wish she stopped friggin flapping about, she canny act for shite.
MEG RYAN: A waste of $15 million, spend it on africa, more entertaining.
SELMA BLAIR: Please someone put her out of her misery.
JAMES VAN DER BEEK: I once wasted a couple hours of my life watching varsity blues at a friends house. Total poop.
Any other teen star, they suck
As Vertino said;
There's a huge difference between an "actor" and a Hollywood "movie star".
Everyone who have said ---- ---- is an overated actor are in fact talking about **STARS** either movie or tv.
Matthew Perry (Chandler - Friends) is a classic example of a star, considering he plays the same bloody character in evrything hes been in. Luckily for him the character is successful.
This all stems from the division between films and movies.
Jack.

i don't expect a lot of people to agree with me, but my top choices for overrated actors would be:
john malkovich
denzel washington
angelina jolie
okay, i haven't seen miss jolie in enough things to really make that statement stick, so i'll admit it's more a gut reaction than anything else. i'll give her the benefit of the doubt.
but washington and malkovich exemplify the adjective overrated. both are minor talents at best, who usually end up playing facets of the same character. i'm not saying they have no business on screen, but it seems generally assumed that these two guys can do no wrong. they certainly haven't done enough to deserve that kind of reputation.
take care

Adam Sandler and co don't act in the first place they do funny faces! But one guy who does act and is so over rated is Edward Norton, everyone calls him the most under rated actor, but he is not great - that stutter thing he does, no matter what character he plays he plays himself pretending to be some one else (hope that makes sense to you)! People like Robert Downey jr(ok he's in prision) act, or denzel Washington but not those made up movie stars!
Miker do you actually care what kind of person tom Hanks is?
this isnt actually rs1 but i think gums is a twat as adam sandle doesn't make faces but uses anger and violence and he's bloody hilarious.
kay
What about Nicholas Cage....I mean bringing out the dead was reasonable but it was scorsese that made it reasonable. But ever other film cage has been in has been the same lifeless expression on his mug.
Cage is pretty good.
But speaking of lifeless faces, Charlie Sheen must have the most expressionless face of all.
He rarely smiles, and when he does it never reaches the eyes. His face never changes.
I think some people are just naming actors who they don't like, regardless of how good their acting is.
Ahh, I agree, I agree...
when you look at someone with predetermined dislike, of course your opinion on their talent is going to be jilted.
I think almost everyone of the actors named
were "good", (whatever that means), in atleast one of their films. They may not be GREAT, they may not understand the human condition as thouroughly as the great masters, but for the specific piece, they effectively and convinvingly put across the message they were trying to convey. Trying scores points for me.
Oh, and for the record, Adam Sandler doesn't try. He's a corporate pawn. Poop on you for ever defending this BUSINESS man.
you know i actually thought tom cruise was pretty good in magnolia, kind of brave to considering his female fan base.
And Majella, you give an honourable mention to kevin costner as though he's an over rated actor, but surely he is one of the most despised people in the movies today. I for one think that the guy has jut had a few bad flicks. I even liked waterworld for the most part if only it hadn't gone off the rails at the end. Sure the postman was shite and he's not exactly in his prime but give the guy a chance, his roles in say the untouchables, jfk, tin cup and a perfect world i thought were pretty damn good. but i guess that's just me.

"what if there is no tomorrow? there wasn't one today"
Im sure they all speak very highly of you lot :-)
C'mon, how can you deny denzel by saying he is overated. HE brings a presence to the screen. He is a very powerful actor with great speaking ability. Whatever he does you believe that he is that character. Other than that I mean look at his movies, Malcolm X, Glory, the Hurricane, he was the best part of the Bone collector, even though the movie sucked.
Overrated would be actors like Brad Pitt and Keanu Reeves they are stars not Actors. Another name in that list is Harrison Ford. he hasn't done a good movie in a long time.
I would have to say....John Travolta, and Arnold uhhh german something or other, and finally....Adam Sandler, what a (oYo) lmao,

FOOLMASTER ENTERTAINMENT
you fuckin' ass clown.
Putting Keanu Reeves who should have stayed in Bill and Teds . . and Brad Pitt, SE7EN and fight club - 2 of the greatest movies (Fincher should be king), putting those two in the same catergory - shame on you, shame on all of you.
the matrix could have been half good (oh im gonna get blasted for this,by some internet geeks), if it weren't for that keanu boy. I only stayed till the end of lock stock 2 (see what ive done there...) because of Brad Pitt.
go watch some films, and by films i mean intelligently written, photographically competent movies, not some no-talent, bigger budget than the producers ass- hole pieces of crap.
ive had a bad day, alright?
Robert Deniro is the most overrated. Yeah he is a great actor, he's done great roles but come on, Rocky and Bullwinkle, 15 minutes sucked except for the trv-900, it put on a dazziling performance.
Keanu gets such a hard time. He's no better/worse than most "stars." All he had to do was look surprised at regular intervals in the matrix and he achieved that with aplomb. Ed Norton and Brad Pitt are good actors. Jeez acting is damn tough...give these guys a break...Not everyone who likes the matrix is a geek, I just enjoy a good action movie with a semblance of a plot and halfway decent charachters. And they're aint many that can even serve up that much. Booker T i hope its about music and not wrestling...
Kevin Costner, oh sorry, you said overrated?
Can't use him then, since everyone knows
he is crap.
the entire cast of lock stock were absolute shite. just goes to show what you can do with fancy editing
overrated you say?? Here's my list:
Adam Sandler-stupidity has a used by date
Jim Carey-can't keep a straight face
Eddie Murphy-not funny
Arnold, van dam all action "heros"-enough said
Steve Martin-not funny
Whoopi Goldberg-annoyingly not funny
Nicole Kidman-expressionless face
Will Smith-he's for 12 year old girls
Gwynneth Paltrow-nup, just doesn't have 'it'
Judy Davies-it's an Australian thing
Judi Dench-she's not THAT great
Matt Damon-boring
Ben Affleck-even more boring
Hugh Grant-bumbling 'floppish' guy boredom
David Fincher-he's not an actor but he's still usually boring and crap
now Brad Pitt may be able to act but he is a sure sucker at picking film roles. For every good film he's done, he's got a legacy of duds to keep him company (Seven Years in Tibet, Seven, Sleepers, Legends of the Fall, Meet Joe Black, The Devil's Own ENOUGH SAID)
Underrated:
Gabriel Byrne
Tim Robbins
Ed Norton
Juliette Binoche
Olivier Martinez-apparently the French Brad Pitt

Video IS a good thing, how else are we gonna know who robbed the Quik-Mart?
Some of these aren't over or underrated - they are just under or over used in movies. Everyone knows how great people like Tim Robbins and Ed Norten are, they just don't make many films.
Costner is the guy who I really can't understand how he got so big. He has the flattest delivery of any actor I've seen in a big movie.
JULIA ROBERTS who stole Ellen Burstyn's Oscar for Erin Brockovich. Apparently, 600 blowjobs will get you a long way in Hollywood too.
THE WEINSTIEN BROTHERS for setting the rise of independent filmmaking back another fifty years.
STEVEN SPIELBERG for whining about not winning another Oscar for Saving Private Ryan, then directing a remake of Bicentennial Man and paying everyone in Hollywood to pretend it's a good movie.
GUY RITCHIE for marrying Madonna so he could get away with ripping off Tarantino.
JERRY BRUCKHEIMER for obvious reasons.
Bicentennial! that?s just too true man. I think kubrick was a bit slow on reading the I robot books.
Any body remember that film could Darrel about a little android kid that runs away. LOL.
Bicentennial is probably one of the most depressing films I have seen apart from Silent Running.

Oh hell yea...but so many posts was complely unneccesary.
He chose well.
I agree that Angelina Jolie is overated. Simon West kept rambling on about how she was the only one for the Tomb Raider role but personally, and I somehow doubt that this is popular opinion, I would liked to have seen Gina Gershon in the role. I think her mix of attractive-bad girl is far more convincing than Jolie's pathetic attempt.
Also that kid in Sixth Sense annoys me, he is rated quite highly, overated? I don't know, my loathing of children actors has clouded my judgement.
And if you're still listening this is some interesting trivia: I heard that Brad Pitt was offered Keanu's part in the Matrix but chose to do Fight Club instead.
