Sorry, i'm a bit excited today, as I get to start teaching guitar. The very instrument that has caused me great joy, sweat, pain, and happiness, and I have been asked to teach it. I think perhaps I'm not made to be a teacher. I jumped all over the place while trying to explain to them certain aspects of music. It was really hard for me, because neither of them had ever played before, at ALL, which meant I had to try and figure out what they should need to know. And they didn't know what questions they needed me to address, so it made it that much more difficult.
You ask questions to me about music, usually I can answer something... but without questions, my explaining gets very confusing at times http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
but, alas, I gave them their assignments, hopefully next week will be a little less stressfull.

Wow.
It almost sounds like you need to be "backwards compatible"...
It might make more sense to have your first student be a fellow teacher!
As you so correctly pointed out...beginning students don't even know what they don't know, so they don't know what to ask.
A music teacher posing as a student might make the entre' into teaching easier for you.

Well the way I went about it is this, I kinda jammed a lot down their throat in our first meeting. I showed them the scale, what notes are essential in the formation of a chord (1st, 3rd, and 5th), I gave them the G scale to work on, to get themselves better aquainted with the guitar. To show them where each note is, what it is, and how to progress down the neck of the guitar. I showed them how to read tableture *which most guitar stuff is written in, and because I dont know how to read sheet music*, then I gave them a simple song, with 4 different chords. I told them next week to know those chords, but more importantly to know the G-scale, or at least kinda get used to playing it. So, we'll see how it goes.
I figure I'll probably spend the next few lessons quizzing them on the g-scale, and on chord shapes... and then we'll get into more chords and different songs.
I actually did a little research for this venture, and found that the sooner you get kids playin songs, the more excited they'll be about playing and stickin wiht it. So I figure if i come up with an easy song each lesson, or every other lesson, along with theory during each lesson, we should be well on our way to having well rounded players.
