Why would the two be mutually exclusive? Say I come up to you, tell you I'd like to have sex with you, however I have had, do have and likely will have many partners besides you. If you say OK, we find a place to get it on. If you say no, I bow politely and disappear into the mist. What's unethical about that?

Until the day arrives when we treat our non-sexual partners equal to our sexual partners, personal ethics will always take a backseat to Sexual promiscuity.
In your scenario, you said you would walk away, because the other person said no, and that would be fine. Walk away as in "see ya".
But if you had had even remotely good sex with that person, in one way or another, that person will probably remain in your life.
And down the road, the person you had sex with (unless it was awful) will have "favored nation" status over those you don't have sex with.
The sex card leads to further possiblities.
The values, responsiblity, or ethics card, usually leaves you with less from others, but more from within.

Yes, you can be ethical and promiscuous. It just matters on your own personal set of ethics and/or those of society, depending on whose standards your were thinking of in your original question.
If it's a matter of personal ethics, you can be a perfectly stand up guy and get around. But if you live your life in a manner that you would consider just, then there is no ethics violation.
If it's a matter of societal ethics, you can as well. Perhaps a person sleeps with a lot of women (or men, if the hypothetical person is a woman or gay) but will always treat everyone with charm and dignity, will never steal, never lie, will never break the speed limit. In other words, does everything right in life by society's standards, even if that person sleeps with half of said society, he can still be considered ethical.

You raise a complex scenario. It's not so much the "sleeping with" aspect I am focusing on.
Rather, does the "ethical stud" treat all equally".
If one never favors those who they have slept with in any way over those they have not or have no intention of sleeping with, that is the real test.
