Last night,I was listening to a recording of Holdsworth w/Vinnie in San Antonio,TX.
I tried to tune out what everybody else was playing and just listened to Vinnie.The shit he was playing was just uncalled for!
I don't see how anybody could physically be that fast.He was all over the place all the time and never slowed down.
All of the odd meter stuff was just rediculous! And that is one of the sickest solos I have ever heard Vinnie play! EVER!!!
I don't think there is another drummer on the face of the planet that is as sound a drummer when it comes to odd time than Vinnie.Any combo you want to throw at him,NO PROBLEM! I've heard the stories of the Zappa days and when he was on the Joan Rivers show of how he would memorize a chart after looking at it once or hearing a tune once and then going up there and shredding it!
I see it like this:
Vinnie could read gnat shit off of a gum wrapper and it would sound killer!
BTW- If you don't have it,get Joni Mitchell's "Refuge of the Roads" video w/Vinnie and Landau.There are some Vinnie moments on there!! Song #2 has this blistering lead in w/Vinnie on double bass and a tune called "You dream Flat Tires" (don't ask me where she got the title) has a tasty little fill at the end of the tune as well as other highlights throughout.Well worth having!!

Wow! I was just listening to San Antonio,Tx. last night and I was thinking the same thing! I agree with you...Vinnie is absolutely tearing it up on that one. I'm going to pop in Florida tonight and dig on that. It's not just the intensity but where the intensity comes from. His phrasing is extraordinary and sometimes incomprehensible. I love it!

Just probably someone who transferred it from the (org.?) vhs tape to dvd.
You have to register and make a bid to (hopefully) get it on eBay.

Refuge of the roads was an oiffical VHS release, out of print but soon to be on DVD from what I have seen. GREAT video.......could do without the horse transitions though. Too artsy

Vinnie is on Jeff Berlin's instructional tape and he and Berlin mix it up pretty intensely. It is amazing to watch.

Where can one get this aforementioned, performance? Could someone also, explain how to capture video clips and burn them to cd, for personal usage. In particular would like to burn to cd the video performances located at Vic Firth and some other sites to "learn" what they are doing on them. The suk thing about that Berlin vid is the little bit that shows Vinnie w JB, Gambale, & local keyb hero Ron Reinhardt...the vid opens w Cox speakg briefly, then the 4some does this power shred fusion rock jam...Vinnie is tearin it up, groovin hard w JB, & Gambale is into his blister solo...then the tune just FADES OUT into oblivion [img]eek.gif[/img] - WTF, JB!!...maybe a little over a minute or so...then, the sedate smooth jizz outro tune while the credits roll...[the intro tune is WAY better]...& THAT'S IT for the "group"...[the only other cool thing is the JB/Jaco duet/battle from PIT]...
Did i hear Mark & Sash say "VINNIE WITH HOLDSWORTH TX & FL?!!!!" SOME OF US DON'T HAVE THIS STUFF!!! [How can we bribe or extort it outta ya's?! [img]wink.gif[/img] ]

Did you ever get to jam with Scott, Randy? He's got somewhat a raucous tone but I like his playing. As someone said; he's a cross between Miles Davis and Allan Holdsworth. I've always enjoyed the first Tribal Tech CD with him, Gary Willis and Joey Heredia.

...& Scott does some really great soloing on Jeff Berlin's Vox Humana-Champion album, & on the JLPonty tune "Cats Tales" off Fables...AWA all the killer TTech discs...a jazz-fusion gtrst friend of mine took some lessons w Scott back 10-12 yrs. ago or so when he was at GIT...between Scott, Joe Diorio, Pat Martino, & some others, he got his act totally together on gtr...said all of them, but ESP Scott, were sticklers for time [obviously]...give yourself a treat & go see Tech LIVE - killer [if they still tour - finance management is usually hard for fusion acts...yeah, i know..."ya think?!"]
