Here are just the first few things that popped into my head after reading your messge.
Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline.
Investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods.
A system of thought based on or involving such inquiry: the philosophy of Hume.
The critical analysis of fundamental assumptions or beliefs.
The disciplines presented in university curriculums of science and the liberal arts, except medicine, law, and theology.
The discipline comprising logic, ethics, aesthetics, metaphysics, and epistemology.
A set of ideas or beliefs relating to a particular field or activity; an underlying theory: an original philosophy of advertising.
A system of values by which one lives: has an unusual philosophy of life.

i suppose i should have done this in the beginning. oh well, sue me.
i want to know your definition of philosophy. i am NOT wanting a text book/dictionary definition.
I WANT YOUR DEFINITION.
i am asking this because i believe it would help everyone (mostly me) understand what is going on here.
take it as this: there is no right and wrong answer. just post what you think...please.

Philosphy - in my own uneducated experiance -isn't so much a thing, as it is a way of being. A person is philosophical when they think outside of the normal exceptance, in order to gain a greater understand of something. Whether it be nature, the body, etc.. just looking at things from a different angle, and questioning what is behind the scenes as well as what's in front, and how the two join. *shrugs*

My deffinition IS the dictionary's Deffinition. If you want a deffinition for some vairiation on the theme of phylosophy, perhapse some branch thereof, perhapse you should consider creating a compound term to fit the intention of your concept of phylosophy. If not you risk never quite having your question answered, and never quite understanding any answers you are given fully....But, I digress.
In closing, one does best to adhear strictly to the dictionary deffinition, for other wise one speaks some vairiant of english, but not english it's self, and misunderstandings arise from this. If you have seen deeper into a thing than Webster for Gd's sake expand the total amont of knowledge in the language, and keep both folly and fact historically intact.
for goodness sake dont try to redefine what you have just established to be false, all that will lead to is some one else falling prey to the same folly later since there is no lingual record of the folly.

Philosophy is from the greek Philos and Sophos, meaning 'love of Wisdom'
Wisdom is the excersize of good judgment by means of assertainment of truth.
As exampled in the Wisdom of Solomon, Solomon was considered wise NOT because he used a ploy to determine who was actually the childs mother, but because he was able to determine the truth of the matter, from which his ability to make the right choice was facillitated.
Now a days we would simply use DNA testing to determine who was actually the childs mother.
The best philosophy you can find is one of honesty, to yourself, as it is only in honesty that truth can be determined, and only in truth do you learn anything. (everything else is just a liar, telling you lies, the only thing you learn from them is that they are liars!)
Plato asked; "What is God?"
Robin (thats me) BOLDLY answered; "The TRUTH!".....figure it out for yourselves!

i am tempted to go another direction on this, but since o am unfamiliar with this particular 'Mr. Robin', i think that sticking close to the sidelines is best at present.
so tell me, why find Truth?

If you don't seek truth, then what is it you seek??, lies???.
All is truth, there is nothing else that exists, lies do NOT exist, simple as that.
Truth is the only 'thing' that you learn from, that's why!
-
Ahh, you like my words now, but you will be mocking me before the thread has ended.
That my dear netzens is why I am buckminster fuller, because I will tell you things you will not believe, and you will call me wacky, and before the sun sets you will reject me three times, and yet fifty years from now your grandchildren will call you the fools and me the visionary. Which is why your laughter will roll off me like water off a ducks back...because I know and history supports my conclusion.

btw...I love that dog SHATOUSHKA, is it a metaphorical solidification of your self percieved hierarchical stance in relation to
the hampster populated board? Or perhapse you just think your fast? I won't test you though, because I live there, and I know that it is verry much like having a hyperactive dog
in your brain, let me ask you, do you ever feel you cant shut it down? Like it's out of control and like no one can catch it least of all it's owner? If so have you considered perhapse that it knows to where it runs, and that it nows better than it's owner...I dont know if you spend your time worrying about it, but incase you do, relax, a greyhound runs because that is what it was made to do, it is fast because it is in harmony with it's nature, if yournature is like a grey hound be at peace with that, and you will be faster still.

Here is truth, If a term word or idea can not stand against it's self and remain unshaken it is falsehood, if it stands it is truth. The clumsley written words of a thousand men can not strip the drivel from a concept as quickly or cleanly as that concept can strip it's self clean or away.
Is thruth truth?
------------------
-
You seek truth to find answers, for it is only the answers that are true, that solve the problems. Problems are why you seek answers.
If you live a life with no problems, then you are doomed to that boredom for the rest of your life, for it is the quest for answers that drives life.
If it is the quest for answers that drives life, then you should seek truth, as that is the only answer that you need.
Plato asked; "What is GOD?"
Mr. Robin (boldly) answered; "Truth"
If you do not seek truth, then truth will seek you, as it must, and you will not recognise that truth when it finds you, and therefore be doomed to the repetition of your self-deceived outcome, for you will not see the answer as it is written large before you, but you will keep on bumping into it, over and over and over again.
Have a nice day!
-
ummm....
i am not sure if the above post was for me or not. so i will post anyway.
i ask 'why find Truth' to recieve (hopefully) a round of answers. not one definitive answer. (despite what i think on the matter)
i have no doubt that Truth has a definitive answer...or definition.
definition is the sole purpose of my question.
now for definition, itself, well...
that is being taken care of on another thread.

Two men sat across from each other at a table in a 24 hour coffee house, a coffe cup sat between them. The first man said to the second man, what do you see, the second man replied I see a cylinder all of three inches high with brown speckles a resteraunt logo and coffee inside. The first replied thats not what I see, I see a cylinder all of three inches high with brown speckles , and a handle...which one of us is right?

of course, on a serious side--assuming you were directing that question to all,
i would have to say that no matter the post, the answer within the post is still no different than the original question.
metaphor(?) aside--
er, assuming it is more than perception,
surely it must be similar to the question:
there is 20 mathematicians in a room and a single equation. after hours of deliberation, they have come to an answer to the equation, which one is correct?
well, obviously ONE could be correct, but then again, NONE could be correct, as well.
er....
i think i should have just sat back and watched the posts developing from your original post, buckminster.

Shame shame! Bad shatouska! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
I will stop trying to lead the debate.
All answers are correct, since they all exist with in a unified reality, the only real question then becomes are the finite range of potential answers given for a finite range of potential questions applicable to the infinite potential situations in any given instance, and the outcome at that point determines wether or not the answers are "compatable" with the questions. Ultimatly it is easier to pick a random answer out of a hat, and find a question which it is (in a limited sense) compatable with then it is to find a compatable answer for a specific question . Now, this may seem rather haphazard at first glance, but when searching for questions to fit speficific answers in limited fields, it is remarkably efficiant.
what is philosophy? Philosophy is a word.

What Mr. A.K.A. Fuller seems to miss is what most justices in the legal system deal with with respect ot telling an answer, and the expression that is commonly accepted is doing 'justice to the truth' of it......

Why is it you insist apon infering that I am unfamiliar with self evident truth? I am not unfamiliar with it, you have mis read me. My intention was to illustrate a scene in a way where it would simultaneously be botha appearant that it was indeed the same object at which both parties looked and that it is not always so simple to be aware of the fact that it is the same object. Take for instance our argument about free will, you say there is no free will, I say there is no free will, I also say there is no absolute not free will, but you are hung up on this because there is no handle on your side of the coffee cup, now would you call that self evident? Personaly I would say it is , I think all truth is self evident, and that perceptions lack of synch with the ordered nature the universe causes limitations in or ability to grasp the self evident nature of all truths.
Self evident truth is not so easy to grasp as you make it out to be not ever instance of self evident truth exists as a physical object visible to both, somtimes the person themself is such a big over grown water buffulo they can see nothing but themself. if you think self appearnt truth is so easly grasped as a solution that no one elses perspective ever need be considered, I would ask you ... why are you here?

------------------
-
Whence has it come from that I stated that there is 'NO free will', the point I have made is that there is free will, just not the ability to enforce the choice!
Apparently you miss the obviousness of that!
You apparently find it difficult to tell that it is the same object when both persons give the same description, what that states about you is a self evident truth, so I can rest assured that, as you claim to be so astute, you can figure it out.....but I would like to see the evidence of that, as in explain it to me please, as apparently I have a much simpler mind then you.
(If you should wish you can selectively quote that one and use it as a contextual deception as to attempt to run me down again, as that seems to be the 'logic' that you employ, right Chachi....what I will address you as from now on, your choice!)
As what is above indicates, you seem to have difficulty with the wholistic nature of the
nature of communications from myself, hence your penchant for selective quotation and persuiant contextual obfuscation.
Self evident truth is not allways easily grasped, I never said it was, I clearly understand that self-evident truths are not always physical, but didn't you state that you were "Astute" enough? Nevermind, I see nothing in the quotation that you have made of me that infers, or otherwise states, that I thought that you were unfamiliar with it. Try basing your arguements on some facts please, not your perceptions of the words of others.
That you would willingly call black white, and white black simply tells me that you are, as I have noted, deceptive, a willful liar, and althought I completely agree with freedom of speech, inclusive of your complete right to tell lies, I encompass that belief with the associative right for someone like myself (Or anyone else who wants to)to point that out, and my right to demonstrate you for the self decieved person that you actually present here.
I have no need to discredit you, as you are doing just fine at that all by yourself.
As for my knowledge of Buckminsters work, hence the "Fullerene" comment, you assume that that implies that I know you from somewhere else, when the simple truth of it is that this is the first time in the entirety of my life that I have had any postings on any bulletin boards, I have never owned a computer, still do not, and have never had the time to do this.
You clearly prove who is actually the assumptive one! Nevermind you have done nothing but dodge the question which begs from you the responce of,"what are you doing here?" as I am here seeking knowledge, attempting to share the little bit of reality that I am aware of, with others who may actually have some interest in things other then the rantings of someone who would abase the conversation to the level of insult only, and solely fro the purpose of attempting ot make themselves look smart.
I have demonstrated to you that I too can insult you, but it is NOT the level of conversation that I would be wanting to indulge in herein, as that is not the purpose of such forums, at least not to the the obvious limited knowledge of them that I have! Then again, you reveal yourself.....
As for the idea of ignorance being bliss, NOT what I said, but you apparently are familiar with the idea that "bliss is ignorance", I didn't know that, and I only stated that "Ignorance MAY be bliss" (aside from the simple fact that any truly astute person would know that 'bliss' and 'happiness' are NOT the same thing, happiness arises when knowledge limits your exposure to the bliss of complete ignorance......it's called thinking CHACHI) that's why I am simply a "happy" guy!
"The greater the island of knowledge, the broader the shores of wonder, surrounded by the oceans of ignorance"......This is why I am such a happy guy, because I can stand on my little island of knowledge and see the oceans of ignorance that surround it.
In your case Chachi, I would suggest you be cautious, for if you were to place you hand in the water, you might just find a shark ready to bite off your arm. Thats because you cannot even recognise your own ignorance?
Just a happy Guy! Tan Q, for de time.
