is there a such thing as 'evil'?
i'm not referring to a dictionary term or a slight understanding of what the word means.
i know what it means.
what i wanna know is, i cannot say because i have to use a word that i have grown to loathe... 'exist'.
so, technically, does evil, in fact, 'exist'?
lord, please don't post:
1) evil exists because there is too much non-necessary, prolonged pain in the world...blah blah blah.
2) evil exists because we can conceive of the word, context and meaning of...blah blah blah.
as a matter of fact, don't even start your post out that way.
i would substitute 'exist' for the word 'real' (as in-- is evil 'real'?) but i am afraid i have just created a similar problem.
i think we are all old enough here to understand what i am asking.
for the sake of argument, i do not believe evil exists/is real.
go ahead...you know you want to...

The Devil is Evil, [In song] cause the bible told me so [/In song]
I am going to go WAY out on a limb and guess that a biblical answer was NOT the answer wanted on this board.
So, in looking at questions such as this, you really need to apply the answer to everyone, or at least the majority of the world population.
Evil?
First we must example is morals exsist. And what are morals but knowing right from wrong.
I belive that all people are born with an understanding of right or wrong (this can of course be argued but this is what I think and sence I am talking, LIVE WITH IT!)
So if right is Good then Wrong is Evil.
Therefor I think Evil exsists in some form for everyone.
One person may take evil to mean the devil, another to represent something in nature, or others can view evil as something simple like hitting your spouse.
I hate to do this but as ALWAYS, it depends on what someone defines as evil.
If you agree with me that Wrong=evil then we are living in a world with a WHOLE BUNCH of evil. If you think evil is something witches or satan worshipers do, then there is less but clearly there is some. If you do not belive in right and wrong and are lead by the idea that you can do what you want, then there is no true evil.
AND you are also VERY likely to be viewing this from a jail sell.
Hopefully none of this made sence, have a NICE day.

er...to be honest, i am not fully sure biblical renderings of 'evil' are NOT pertinent to this discussion, however, i do not see them valueable at this time.
what i want to know, in response to shaz (and maybe mr. robin), if you feel that way about evil--what is the difference between EVIL and BAD?
an apple can be BAD, yet certainly it cannot be EVIL.
in addition, a person can know that an apple is BAD without moral implications.
how does your view 'wrong=evil' stand up?

WRONG...EVIL...BAD
In the beginning, there was nothing wrong, nor correct, neither good or bad. Then I came up.
One day, I felt hungry and picked an apple. I ate it and hunger went away.
A couple of hours later, I felt hungry again and picked a flower. I ate it and soon felt weird.
I then realised that 'apple + eating' is OK, while 'flower + eating' is NOT OK.
Some other combinations that I found OK:
'cold + blanket'
'thirst + water'
'darkness + candle'
Some combinations that I found NOT OK:
'marbles + washing machine'
'sugar + teeth'
'stone + head'
Here are some combinations that I found neither OK nor NOT OK:
'rain + fish'
'apple + wheel'
'glass + money'
Here are some combinations that I only found OK occasionally:
'I + people'
'razor + skin'
'fireplace + sleep'
Still ain't got it? http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

Evil needs a frame of reference to be understood, since that doesn't exist (only in a book, which can't possibly count), nor does evil; only good and bad and all that in between, which does have a frame of references (our consciences). Thus evil doesn't exist.

This topic was supposed to be a philosophical one. What went wrong?
By saying truly exists, philosophically, per se, frame of reference, need of definition, in itself etc., you all just misuse a philosophical jargon, yet mean nothing at all.
You don't know where evil is to be found. Such a debate just makes bad things even worse.

I think I love you Alex.
I have thought that 'evil' is when someone has intent to do someone else harm when they know that it will hurt another.
Bad is when something not good happens.
For example: If I tied up your dog, then ran it over with my car, that would be evil.
However, if I accidentally hit it because you forgot to close your gate, that would be bad.

I thought the real evil was discounting other belief systems based on a closed mind.
Not to meantion that your statement shows a compleate lack of understanding of the bible.
Going back to one of the few actually philosophic questions on the thread.
What is evil?
Evil as a thing: very difficult to discuss. This leads to biblical and other theological discussion.
Evil as an action: This I think we can discuss without getting into personal belief systems.
Can a person do evil?
If yes, what kind of actions are evil?
If no, does it exsist?
Is evil a human action?
If so, why are humans different and is evil a result of self awareness?
If evil is not a function of humans, what non human action is evil?
THERE, that may take this in a new direction. Hope to see some more action on this thread tommarrow.

Oh, I'm definitely convinced that evil is concept that applies strictly to intelligent life (notice, I do not restrict intelligence to human beings). Malice and intent are clear components of evil.
If my accelerator sticks and I drive over a pedestrian in the crosswalk, that's tragic. If I floorboard it and deliberately run down the pedestrian, that's evil. We all innately know the difference, and the difference is one of intent.
People may claim there is no such thing as evil or morality, but if that is so, there is no such thing as unfair or unjust or wrong, either.
If I walk up to you on the street and, without warning or reason, I punch you out and deck you, I guarantee you are going to take a moral position on that act. It is unfair to hit you when you're not ready and totally unsuspecting. It's unjust to hit you without reason or provocation. It's wrong. It's evil. We all innately know this to be true, even if we have a hard time defining or articulating exactly what makes evil evil.
But we know it when we see it or feel it. If we rationalise our way out of a belief in evil, if we intellectualize it away, well, fine, we can play those kinds of mind games. But evil is evil all the same.
Personal opinion: I think the main reason people want good and evil to be seen as mere human constructs without any objective reality is that we don't want there to be any moral law telling us what is right or wrong in any compartment of our lives. Eradicating the concept of evil means that there is no moral authority over our lives, and that is clearly what many people prefer.
That is not a universal statement about people who deny the reality of evil. There are many reasons for that denial, and some people's reasons are purely philosophical. This is not an indictment of any person who has posted an agnostic position on good and evil. This is merely my take on what I see as a major societal move away from a belief in commonly accepted standards of good and evil.

Without good *if there is such a thing* and/or truth *again, if there is such a thing* can evil *if it exhists* exhist??
a double edged sword all these things fall into, and I suppose it is funny. Evil doesn't exhist, just seperate ideas of obscure paranoia and personal insecurity, leading one to think that what they do is "evil" when in reality, it's just a simple problem that life hands them, of which they can't solve. A person kills millions of people, for reasons no one fully understands *Hitler* is he evil? I would venture to say not.
Evil cannot exhist, does not exhist. And if it does, then we cannot paint one person as evil without that same paint dropping onto each and every other person alive.
so it either doesn't exhist, or we are all evil.

as for if he had succeeded, well, i'm not interested in that. Why? Because he didn't so it holds no relevance... but I'm afraid I have gotten off topic.
My main reasons being that he was not necessarily evil, just a man who's mistaken thinking of people, led him to make mistakes as humans are prone to doing. It wasn't evil that made him kill, it was hatred, and mislead thinking.
which once more, brings me to conclude that "evil" doesen't exhist.

Your making 'evil' sound like your meaning 'very bad'. You imply it has religious connotations but have not led the debate in that direction as of yet... interesting.

I did explain his main task was besides world domination, the extermination of the jews. Re read what I said for the first time. Alright, I don't know what the Flat Earth Society is... for one, and for two, I never attempted to hide anything, in fact, you presented world domination, so i presented that he ALSO wanted to kill all the jews.
