After 14 years... I think I'm done with the Spawn comic.

I grit my teeth and endured the "Angel Medina" years.... I openly welcomed Phillip Tan and the new writers....


I was actually looking forward to Armageddon happening in the comics....

But issue 160 summarizes some problems that makes me think the comic has jumped the shark.


- Characters are constantly being introduced with very little explanation or back story... and instead of developing them, we get these teeny tiny cells with indescript "action" events... and then the characters fade into obscurity. [img]graemlins/whatever.gif[/img]

- Spawn faces off against the Disciple... while Cyan watches everything play out on a laptop.... as a VIDEO GAME??? Fuckin' pleaaassee. [img]graemlins/whatever.gif[/img]

- Granny is a memeber of Heaven's army... and is in chainmail with a sword? [img]graemlins/whatever.gif[/img]


Looks like the Ultimate Marvel stuff is the only thing that is worth reading right now. [img]frown.gif[/img]

I think they outgrow the charater too fast too soon, to try to go back to basics....

Hell, Spiderman was created in the 60's and still today has almost the same problems as in the begining.....

I stopped reading after issue 5 or 6...the story and characters just never held my interest. I think I was too much a fan of Todd's art, anyway...and I believe he stopped doing most of the art some time around then...

I only read the EndCap columns... for about 4 years. The storyline in the comic never seemed to know where ti was going (a lot like a Bendis comic, really).

I am still enjoying it, and for me there has been a step up to new interest of late.

Although, I do ask a quesiton.... How would you have conveyed the information to Cyan about the fight in Eden if not on a monitor that was available? ust curious, as to me it makes sense. It was there, it didn't freak the child out, and it showed what was needed, the fight for Cyan to help, and the counter to track how much life Spawn had left.

Things like the symbolism of Twitch's death have added new life to it for me, and as for the characters, what is to say you aren't embarking on their first foray into "The gospel of Spawn"?

Well, the only new book I read for years, was from Brian. He sent me one comic about the city full of clowns.....no I wanted to know how the story developed.....

yeah, I tried picking up Spawn again-
(dropped out around 100 & something)
looked cool for a few, but I really think I'm wasting my time-

On the other hand I sold all my 'Ultimate' comics.......

Just out of curiosity, what was your problem with Medina?

I was done with that rag over 10 years ago

I stayed on until they killed off Malbolgia and Angela. I figured that was a good place to just plain stop, and Todd was all about dropping the regular "fantastic" characters, and moving to a film noir "gritty" book, rather then what I wanted.

I backtracked and started collecting when the issues were around 120, and then worked hard to find lots on ebay to go back and collet all that I knew of.

Done pretty good as I think there is only a cover or two on the spin offs I think I am missing.

I've gone back and read the story lines to present and have really gotten into the current arcs, and very curious to see where it all goes.

Anybody wanna buy some of Todds breakthrough issues?

i never shared the Bendis hate until the Ultimate Clone Saga started up... total clusterfuck of a storyline. you almost have to read it just to see how fucking BAD it is.

I wonder how much my set of 1-105 would fetch on ebay?

well, I know I paid about $50 for issues 1-90 something a year ago.

If you have all the variant covers for 100, then it might go pretty decent in price.

Shipping is a killer though

I dropped it after #102. I did though buy #150 only because it was the variant sketch cover done by Todd.
