I've been meaning to make a rather difficult announcement here for some time (weeks in fact) but have been stalling due to the fact that I've been unsure exactly what to say or how much information to give. A while ago I asked Carl for his opinion on the matter and he kindly reiterated my view that it would be fine to let you all know what's been happening. Following a chat yesterday with Pat I've decided to bite the bullet and let those who might be interested/concerned know what a nightmare we've had recently.
Basically, our bassplayer Joolz (one of the loveliest people on Earth and the only bloke I've ever snogged) has been seriously ill. I'm not going to go into precise details about his illness, as I'm hoping he'll be able to let people know as much/little as he wants to when he's able to. He's currently in hospital though, where he's been for some time now but, thankfully, is starting to show signs of making a recovery.
Rather than keep everyone in the dark about this, or let them find out by idle gossip, we've decided to let people know, particularly as messages from those who know him or were into the band might help his recovery. If anyone wants to post a message here I'll make sure he gets it. Likewise, if you'd like to send a card or whatever I'll let you have an address.
Obviously this situation, which has come as a complete shock to all of us, has meant that progress on the CD and website has been delayed. I'll let you know of any developments though.
Paul

Damn..sad to hear.
Well all I can say is to be strong and for Joolz to get well.
-
Grim news. Get well soon, Joolz. The world needs more like you.
-
Maybe we can make this one a "sticky" topic so that people can find out about it as they wander in and convey the messages that they wish to, and we not lose the topic in a flood of BS topics. Spice, would that be cool?
I'm still sitting here and awaiting word of Joolz coming running out of the hospital. I passed along my words to you through emails, but I still have to say that the guy has meant a ton to me musically, and I never realized it. Hell, he helped lay the foundations for The Wildhearts! For that alone he deserves praise musically, but then to add Soho, the man is blessed.
Kick some butt Joolz!!! Get your ass back out of here.
BTW, what is "snogged"???
-
Hey Carl, a snog is a full-on passionate kiss. May involve tongues, lol.
Get well soon, Joolz.
-
Oh...ummm...well...I kind of thought it might be something of the sort...but ya know...I didn't want to go pointing the finger or anything. Well, lets hope the opportunity of further "snogging" doesn't keep him from making a full recovery. He just might be hiding from you Paul.
Sorry, just a little humor to add to it all. No offense meant, and if any taken, I will delete.
-
Jesus, that is sad newz.... all the best to Joolz and i hope the guy gets a lot better soon!!
Paul. I got yer email but yahoo haz decided to play funny buggerz with me again, so i'll reply when i can and cheerz!
-
Paul... I've left a message in private for ya
-
Thanks for the very accurate description of 'snogged' Stacey. I'd like, however, to point out that tongues weren't involved and it was a simulated act for the benefit of moustachioed hecklers in Saxon t-shirts at our early gigs supporting dodgy metal bands.
As for further snogging Carl, the goattee that Joolz sports these days would have to be shaved off first!
-
My best wishes to Julien and speedy recovery!!

All I can say is,...
Joolz, you and the Roses never made this punkass with 2 left feet dance so much in his life, fun n frolix in drunken stoopers with friends and freaks alike, you get well soon cuz I still have 2 left feet and I'd love to have a pint with you and the guys and dance to your tunes once again in 2004!
Best wishes and here's to a speedy recovery.

Paul, any info on Joolz? Hope he'z doing well now. Just thought i'd post becauze i was wondering. Still wishing the guy well here.
-
There's nothing new to report yet, Andii. As I said before, it's difficult because Joolz hasn't been in a position to let us know if he wants his private details made available to everyone - that's something he can decide for himself when he's able to. All I can say therefore is that his condition has been very serious but, thankfully, there have recently been definite signs of improvement. There is still a long way to go though.
Thanks for your concern however - and thanks to everyone else for your messages. As soon as I get any good news I'll post a message ASAP.
-
Totally understand mate and thankz for replying.
Still thinking of the guy here anyway.
-
get well soon Joolz....you have our prayers.

Hi guys, just found all your discussions re Jools and thought I'd just say hi. I'm Sue, Jools' girlfriend. As the grapevine of how he's doing seems to have reached Poland, Ireland, the USA and the middle of the ocean somewhere, Im sure Jools doesn't mind you all knowing how he is. He had a brain haemhorrage on the 16th June and underwent major surgery. The surgeon told me and his mum and dad that he wasn't likely to survive the night. He wasn't counting on the fact that Jools is a punk, so Jools survived the op just to piss him off!! It was touch and go for the next few weeks; he was in a coma but eventually he opened one eye and then began to squeeze our hands when we spoke to him. As the weeks have gone by, he has gradually got better, but he's still in a fairly bad way. He's still being fed through a tube in his tummy and has to be hoisted into a chair. He's learning to walk again and has even been singing and strumming his guitar, although he's very weak and stiff. He can talk well but his voice is very weak and he whispers a lot. He knows who everyone who visits him is, although his memory of names is poor and his short term memory in general is weak. Lots of his friends have been to visit him and I'm sure that this has aided his recovery. On Monday 20th Sept he'll be moving from Hope Hospital to Cherry Tree near Stockport, which is a lot closer to home. I can keep anyone posted on his progress, and I'll tell him that you are all asking after him. As those of you who know Jools will know, he is a one in a million special person who doesn't deserve all this shit. However, I can assure you all that he still has a twinkle in his eye, a wicked sense of humour, and the snogging is fantastic!!! Thanks for caring, Sue x

Thanks for the update. Good to hear he's on the mend.
-
Yeah cheerz for letting us know there and i'm glad the guy iz getting better gradually!
-
Thanks for the update Sue!!! Damn, sounds like he is a bit of a fighter! I don't know Joolz, but love his music dearly. Please do keep us (me) posted on how he is doing! Glad to hear the snogging is just as good with you as it was with Blittz. That Joolz must be something! Tell Prince to watch out, eh???
-
Told Jools you'd all been asking after him and he said to say "Hi you all, how are you doing?" Sue
-
Please give him a massive snog from me, Sue, and tell him that I'll be up to see him on Saturday week - together with those other two southern poofters Pat and Colin.
Love to all of you up there,
Px
-
He knows you're coming, Paul. He moved safely to Cherry Tree today and I've just been to see him. Will pass on the snog when I go on wednesday, do you want tongues?
Sue

"He wasn't counting on the fact that Jools is a punk, so Jools survived the op just to piss him off!!!".....haha...too funny there Sue.
Glad to see he's doing better

I've been veggie for ten years...oh, go on then...!

I hate it when this kind of thing happens because finding the right words is almost impossible but I knew Joolz back from when i played in rich Rags, we supported Roses twice and had a blast, right through to the time i was in heartbreak angels living in a flat in st johns wood where Joolz was an everpresent! We came to be good friends and i remember his excitement bringing home the Wildhearts demo with himself and snake, still to this day my favorite ever demo - bar none, and me and Shuff n the boys from the angels giving it the big thumbs up! Overall tho hes just the most down to earth guy i think i met on my travels and i respect that more than anything so DUDE, get well soon and best wishes for the future because you have a part to play in it my friend!
Ian artist formerly known as Kim Warrener(or Kimberely Clark as gary from angels/glory strummers used to call me!!)
-
Told Jools I had to give him a snog from you, Paul, and he was pouting ready for it. Am a bit worried, I think he enjoyed it too much....
-
He always was a good pouter. In fact it was a major requirement for any member of the Soho Roses. 'How well can you pout?' came just above 'What brand of hairspray do you use?' and 'Can you play?' on our list of important attributes.
Seriously though, I'm willing to do anything that might help my mate's recovery - snogging included.http://E:\Medium\sr32m.jpg

Just gotta say, this thread that started as a REAL big downer, has now become the one thread that puts a BIG smile on my face in the morning! When Joolz gets out, I damn well expect to read that the whole of Soho Roses hooked up again and had a good time and a DAMN stiff drink (and later, but for none of our business, Sue gets a fine ol' "snogging" for herself), and eventually the band plays together again, in somebodies basement just for the hell of it all!!! Man, this is a hell of a reason for a celebration!!!
SNOG ON ALL!!!
-
Jools is still doing ok, but is very easily tired since moving. Sleeps a lot, probably catching up on all his insomniac years. You'll probably get a call from his mum telling you not to wear him out, Paul! Not very punk, but prob for the best. Maybe it's all this snogging? Anyway, the nurses have said that no more than two people should be round the bed/chair at a time, but will be ok if it's just three of you. Take care, and thanks to everyone for their good messages,
Sue

Great to hear Joolz is on the mend, I'm a big fan of the soho roses and treasure my blue vinyl, even though I haven't got anything to play it on right now...LOL. Joolz sounds like a great guy with a lot of friends, and a fighter too, here's to him being up around and ripping guitar again soon.
-
Soho Roses will remain my fucking fave ever band of all time. Alwayz loved Blitt'z vocalz and that whole trashy az hell rock n' roll sound.
