A seventh version of Verona's topic: After reading a few posts from my female compadres, I thought we might have a board of our own where we could discuss our interests, our hobbies, our husbands, significant others, etc. You do NOT have to know how to sew to join us. We are a friendly lot who like to talk about everything. Also included would be our unique perspectives and insights into B5 episodes, as well as commentaries on other sci-fi programs and writings. Men may visit
OCCASIONALLY if they are polite.
Since people have told me that they do not want to start a topic for whatever reason but have said that they wouldn't mind seeing this topic here, what the hey.
-
Well PC, I can sew, sort of, just don't look at the hemlines. It doesn't seem that, here in 2001, we should HAVE to sew. I'm still looking for the doors that say, "SHOOP!" as they open automatically, and clothes that get blown onto you as you climb off of your anti-grav bed. Instead, we're facing energy shortages and persistent winter. Somethin' ain't RIGHT!

Well, I'm not a woman, but I sew kinda.
I reroot Barbie doll heads.
Regarding the post about someone's Uncle and his husband adopting. That's really great to hear that they were awarded with a child.
"Blair" and I have often thought about how great it might be to raise and spoil a disadvantaged child who has no one. Being able to turn a child's life around that has no future to look forward to. And no one to really really love them.

I think "Women's Sci Fi Fan Club and Terrorist Society" is a more fitting topic title...

Hey...I'm only using the words of a bumper sticker on the back of a Saturn station wagon where I used to work. I had to smile at it each time I saw it, 'cause it reminded me of the topic name. Now, every time I see that topic name, I just substitute.
Besides, it's better than using the word "collective", don'tcha think?

I say we move the Sewing Circle here. It is set up. There are several friendly faces already here and this is where Lyta will be keeping us up to date on JMS and his on-line information, which is the other old vine topic that I am most likely to read.
Note to any men joining us for the first time - jump on in. As long as you can stand the girl gab format, you are more than welcome.
It was my uncle and his husband who just adopted their former foster son. Paperwork is still in process for the little one (actually the little one is a chubster and Joey is rather slender, but that isn't the point). From what I hear, Joey is very pleased with the whole thing, including his new name. Uncle and uncle-in-law hyphenated their last names and changed Joey's to match theirs. Very smart considering that not everyone in the world will understand two men travelling with their son, especially since her really doesn't look like either one of them. Having the same name all around should help convince the sceptical, or at least facilitate them demonstrating that they are the legal parents.
So, let's get the conversation rolling.

P.S. I am reading the first book of the B5 technomage trilogy. It is amazing. Get it. Read it. Enjoy it.
P.P.S. After a two week hiatus that was simply agonizing, I finally get to go to karate again this week. Yippee!!!
-
Polly Math, great to see you here. Check out the B5 Book Discussion. We are posting ont he books there. I am anxious to discuss the Technomage book, so let me know when you are done.

*hugs Pollymath* Great to see you here! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
And ProfBrat, I got the book, since it is going to snow for three days and I won't be going anywhere, I should finish it soon. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif

Snow! Three days? I spent the afternoon under the Banyan trees in the park. 78 degrees and a lovely breeze. Bet you'd love to throw a pie my way right now.

Hello, Folks.
Just reporting in. I've been out of touch a while. Check the Sewing Circle at SFV to catch the run-down.
I'll be stopping in here as well as Community Zero. I don't want to lose touch.
More later, kids.

Welcome again MightyLady.

That's what I've been doing all along and the darn smilie still wont work . Funny, it always worked before.

Hi Absom,
Do you by chance have the "Disable Smiles in this Post" box checked under "options" on the reply box when you go to make a post.
-
Make sure you don't select disable smilies in this post, it is right above show signature.

Since SFV is down, here's a copy of my post at the Sewing Circle there. Hope it fits! Is there a character limit here?
>>Greetings and salutations, Everyone.
Sorry I've been absent for so long. And I can't even claim lack of time this time. So... let me launch into the litany of sorrow (tongue-in-cheek grin).
As of February 9th, I was laid off from my wonderful engineering job. It had become very stressful but, still, I didn't want it to end. Three weeks before I was laid off I was "promoted" from product engineer to Kaizen engineer. For those of you not into professional buzzwords, Kaizen is a fancy, Japanese way of saying "continuous improvement."
While I had a very good background for product engineering, I was unprepared to be a Kaizen engineer. My strength lies in an ability to follow details forever. I can dovetail specs, procedures, work instructions, customer prints and in-house Bills of Material together to make sure that the end product, be it a single part or a several hundred piece assembly, is as it should be to meet or exceed the customer's needs. I am a step-by-step person who slogs through the details.
Kaizen engineering requires a more holistic viewpoint. Continous improvement is easier to implement when one sees the whole process, not just the individual steps in the process. I gave it my best shot and I had an incredibly supportive supervisor--after all, she had lobbied to keep me rather than the engineer who had been with the company for several years and doing the Kaizen engineering since before I was hired. In the long run, though, if I hadn't been laid off I probably would have suffered any number of stress-related illnesses. I was feeling like I was drowning and barely able to keep my head breaking through to catch a gasp of air.
I would have been able to get a handle on the job. I know I'm capable of doing it. I didnt'want that job, though, and not under the conditions at the shop. Everyone was stressed. The corporate "campus" leader terrorized everyone and no one felt safe no matter how good a job they were doing.
To give you the bigger picture, the lay-off I was a part of took the lay-off head count to 126 people since Thanksgiving. So, the business is hurting right now and the lay-offs are needed to keep the business healthy. You can't pay people if you don't have the sales and shipments to put money in the bank. Still, I don't think that the atmosphere at the shop is the best I've seen in similar situations.
So there you have it... I am a member of the ranks of the unemployed...
On to the next item of my personal litany of sorrow. (You didn't think that was the end, did you?)
Four days after being laid off I had my companion of almost 16 years, my adorable fur-mudgeon, my sweet kitty, Fuzzy, put to sleep.
This was not a sudden thing. Fuzzy started having seizures several years ago and I have been giving her daily medication for a while. When the medication wasn't effective the vet would try additional drugs. But in the past few months Fuzzy's poor brain started breaking down at an increasing rate and there were no drugs left to insure the quality of life she deserved. During the last few days of her life she would walk in clock-wise circles, unable to steer herself out of blind alleys and obstacles that she couldn't scale. I had to block off every small opening I could and then she would wander into an area where she got her front paws, shoulders and head through an opening that she was too weak to lift her hind quarters through. I was constantly searching the apartment to find her and set her free again.
As she walked, she seemed unable to stop anymore to eat. I would mash up canned cat food with some water and pick her up in my arms to feed her with a syringe the vet gave me for that purpose. Neither would she lie down to rest. She would walk and walk and walk, always in clock-wise circles. I would pick her up after a while and lie her on her side in her bed so she could rest. During the last few days, I would pick her up and hold her in my lap for hours so that she could sleep.
After a weekend that allowed me to pamper her, allowed Aaron and his dad (who had had her in his life as long as I did) to say good-bye, I took Fuzzy to the vet and he gave her an injection. She was dead in a matter of seconds, her heart stopped quickly and quietly, ending a long life of faithful kitty service and love. (Pause to cry a little and wipe tears.) http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif
After that, my next item seems so trite.
My car died. Almost two weeks ago. As of yesterday, Saturday, it has been resuscitated but I don't trust it. I stalled out at 3 different intersections while driving it home from the garage. This does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling as I try to make it to job interviews. I need reliable transportation and I no longer trust the Volvo to provide it.
So there it is, Folks. I'm in the market for a new job, a new cat and a new car.
I plan to be fussy about each of them, though. I am making enough on unemployment that I don't have to take just anything to get by.
And, though I miss having a feline companion, I'm not going to scoop up a kitten just yet. Or ever, probably. I will most likely find an adult cat in need of a loving home, either from the newspaper ads or from the local animal shelter.
As to the car, well, I looked at a '90 Camry yesterday. But I really don't fit in small cars designed by small people for small people. So, hopefully, my mechanic is going to have another Volvo wagon for me to try out in the next week or so. Let's hear it for cars designed by Swedes for Swedes... cars that can seat 4 people who are 6 feet tall comfortably!
I know, I know, I'm not 6 feet tall... but I do have longer than usual legs for my 5'6" height and I never seem to fit into oriental cars without feeling like origami. My sister has been loaning me her Elantra and I have to put the seat all the way back, tilt the steering wheel all the way up and still I hit my head getting through the door!
Well, I think that's enough from me for now.
p.s. I did have a job interview on Friday morning and though it's a step back to QC Technician, if offered the job I will take it as the Director of Quality seems genuinely interested in motivating her employees to learn as much as possible. I would have the potential to learn, grow and move. *grin* It helps that I will start out making more than I was making as an engineer!

Beebunch,
I broke down and cried when I read that post. I'm sure you'll be okay job wise, and car wise, but the cat_ . Being a cat lover, I couldn't take it on top of all your other woes. How sad to see that poor thing wondering around. We had the same problem with Rascal, our last furry friend. Being devout cowards, we are now living with some feathered pals.
Good luck,Hon.
-
Bee, I do hope the job thing works out, and your car problem gets solved quickly. But oh, the poor kitty. It's so hard to make that decision. We had one of our dogs put to sleep a year and a half ago, we'd had her 14 years. She had liver cancer. Like you said, they're gone in seconds, the pain is over and they're free. For you, though, it's just beginning. You know it was the right decision, but I'll say it again anyway. It was the right decision. She'll be waiting for you when you get to the other side.
-
Bee, as a cat owner and member of the ranks of the self-unemployed, my heart goes out to you in your misfortune, it's the hardest thing a pet owner can go through to lose a beloved companion of so many years. I dread when it's my oldest, Dandelion's, turn.
If troubles really do come in threes, however, I am hoping for you that happiness is just around the corner.
Take care,

I?m sorry to hear about your job and especially your cat being an animal lover myself. I adopted an adult cat two years ago and he?s been my furry little friend ever since. I had an 8-year-old German Shepherd who died unexpectedly while I was at work one day?massive heart attack. It was extremely hard for me since his death took me by surprise (never did get to say goodbye the proper way), and it took some time for me to adjust to him not being around. At least Fuzzy is in a better place now and is no longer suffering.
-
Wow MightyLady, what a rough a month. I'll be crossing my fingers for you, 'cause my Corporation is having cutbacks as well. So far it's just been the contractors and Temps, but it is a public company and if the Stock Market doesn't improve soon (Which it's not likely to) who knows how extreme they may get with measures.
BTW, why is this topic trying to find ScifiVine?
-
Hi, everybody, I made it here! But I'm still going to visit community zero.
I just recovered from some tooth surgery. I was pretty swollen and blue in parts of my face. It's so nice to be able to laugh and yawn again. It's really annoying if you can't yawn when you're tired!

Welcome, Manne. So sorry about your surgery. Hope you're able to laugh again.

Thanks for all the kind words, Folks. I really appreciate them.
For those of you who belong to the Sewing Circle at Community Zero, I posted 2 photos of Fuzzy.
Those who don't belong to the Sewing Circle at Community Zero and would like to, get in touch with fanuilh. Being able to post images is a nice touch over there.

The Community Zero Women's SciFi Fan Club and Sewing Circle is at http://www.communityzero.com/sewingcircle, for anyone interested. If you didn't receive an invitation (I sent out bunches, but not all of them got where they were going and I do not have correct email addresses for everybody, like PollyMath, so some of them came back at me), you can still apply by going there and applying. I check it at least once a day and approve whoever has asked. If you have to pick another user name, that's okay. Just let us know who you are. Or not, if you prefer.
Cheers.

Thank you for the Birthday Greetings. We always get more on line than in RL, don't we? It's wonderful to have met so many dear friends the last few years. I suppose, in a way, we should thank JMS for getting us all together. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
-
Wow, what happened? Looks as though my last post scared everyone away. Almost two weeks have gone by with no new posts. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif
-
Happy belated birthday Absom! Is it more active over at CZ maybe?
-
Sorry, Absom.
I've been trying to resolve a few things in RL and haven't been online much in the past few weeks.
One thing resolved: the car crisis.
I have upgraded my '77 Volvo wagon for an '88 Volvo wagon. Silver this time and I now have a roof rack for extra passengers. *g*
When I find a digital camera I'll take photos and post them somewhere.
(Don't ask how I payed for it. You won't like the answer.)

Well! You certainly left us with a cliff hanger, Mighty Lady. I wont sleep all night wondering if you've been arrested for your nefarious money making scheme.
[This message has been edited by absom4 (edited March 27, 2001).]
-
LOL, Absom!
It's not nefarious, just a little smarmy...
[This message has been edited by MightyLady77 (edited July 16, 2001).]
-
All right, Bee. 'Fess up. You cannot leave us with "smarmy" as a cliff hanger and not confess. Watch out or we will take out the soft cushion and the comfy chair!
Speaking of the real world, what do you folks think of me as an IRS attorney? I know I claimed I really didn't want to do that anymore, and I don't, but it might be a place to tread water while building up a tutoring business and I bet they only work from 9 to 5. This would be dealing with either mid to large size businesses or with crooked charities, not making life miserable for real folks. There is something vaguely appealing about the idea. I especially think that people who claim to be running a charity and then don't give the money over to the causes they claim to support are breaking the public trust.
In the tutoring area, a friend at the radio station had the best marketing idea yet. There is a free mag/advertising circular given away in plastic boxes all over the city. I could write an article for them about how to teach your child mathmatics. If they let me put even the barest contact info at the bottom of the first column, bingo, instant advertising.
I am looking forward to Passover this year. I'm taking the train to MA to spend about two days with my aunt, et al. My uncle and his hubby are bringing the kids down so I can give Joey a great big "I'm so glad you got adopted" hug, play with Jacob now that he is walking and talking a little and see my cousin's new baby.
So, how's life with you all?
-
Polly,
Actually, it's not that bad. I used my credit card to get a cash advance so I could pay for the car.
Wonder of wonders, the Dragon Vile, the gonna-be-ex, advanced me a like amount from our pending property settlement. So I've already sent a payment to the credit card company to cover what I took as an advance.
Now, about being an IRS lawyer: someone else is going to do the job if you don't. I trust you more than anyone else in the world to do a diligent, ethical job in that sort of positiion. So, if that's what you are thinking of doing, don't dwell on the negative images but on what you can bring to the position.
I'm hoping you are going to have new photos of your new cousin and cousin-to-be to post online one of these days. And the daddies, too! Happy families are always a treat to see.

Dragon Vile came through? Will wonders never cease. Thank goodness, anyway. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
