I need help from one of the resident Technomages. My C-MOS battery is dying (it thinks now at 9:30PM, Friday that it is 2:30 last Sunday afternoon). Fan thought it is relatively easy to change that. Any opinions? If so, how 'bout $ (I'll be taking it in to have them play with it!). I'd really rather try to keep this little ol' antique running as long as I can with "nickle and diming" it, rather than shell out for a new one right now.

I can't tell you if it's even possible with your motherboard. The computer I did this fix to was used when I bought it in '93. Back then pc's weren't seen as disposable items. Nowadays, well, there might or might not be an option to switch from the battery that is wired to the board to a battery pack (that uses AA's!).
If you don't mind taking off the cover and poking around... What about the hubby? He's handy about these things, isn't he?

Hi Syc,
It might be worth your while to open the computer up. If your lucky it will be a flat one similar to watch battery, but about the size of a quarter and just clips in, you could replace that yourself with a soldering iron. Or it may be similar to that and soldered in. It could also be a cylinder that is soldered in. At any rate it should only have 2 (maybe 3 if a ground pin) legs. It should cost almost nothing to replace it (soldered or not) and the battery itself shouldn't cost more than $15.00, if that. Someone who knows how to solder could do it in under 3 minutes, once the top is off the computer.

Bad news! It's a $10. battery (that's not too bad), but the tech who has worked on this one before said that it is buried so deeply that you have to take apart the whole thing to get to it. Hubby thought that was a little riskier than he wanted to get into; alternatively, labor would be $90. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif I can buy a new box there for $300. (Unfortunately, I don't have a good sense of "throw-away" vs "durable goods"!)
Time to bite the bullit and get the new 'puter and a free printer? (And hope the car and cat stay healthy for a few pay checks!!)

Thought some of you might be interested...I remember driving to Michigan in 3? days with QueenGOP, and our schedule was a tad aggressive. Interesting link Wizz. I love long distance riding on my bike, but I like to enjoy the ride also. With that pace and only 3 hours of sleep a day, I'm not sure how much I would enjoy the ride as well as safety concerns that come with sleep depravation.

Hey, anybody here got any sage computer advice? I'm thinking of setting my mother up with a basic home computer so she can email all her friends and relatives and also use the internet. Considered the Ipaq option, but you can't print out, which is kind of useless. Now I'm looking at Gateways and Compaqs in the $600-$700 price range with a year's free MSN. Only thing is, everyone I know uses AOL and I don't know anything about MSN. Got any advice, let me know--

Iz...MSN may be free for a year, but check the fine print. You may be obligated to continue with MSN after the first year. The rate may be higher than a regular ISP. Also, check to make sure that the dial-up number for MSN is a local call for your mother. I know it would be a toll call for me here in Maine. If it's a toll call, it means that all of her online time would be chargeable at long distance rates. I don't know anyone right now who has MSN as a provider. I think Piscea used to and I don't remember her complaining about her provider. Hope this is helpful.

If your mother isn't planning on doing any word processing or spreadsheets, graphics or music, Web-TV might be an option. The buy-in is fairly cheap, you can attach a printer, and it gives you internet access.
It's not a solution if she is going to want to do anything requiring a hard drive to store data and programs, however. It works for some people, others need a full-blown computer.
I can put you in touch with a friend who really likes his Web-TV if you are interested in talking with someone who actually uses it.

eMachines are running a bit cheaper than most of the name brands. As we get closer to Xmas I think prices will drop and rebates will increase. They really want to offload these computers. I think that we will see some slashed prices come holiday time.
I am leery of the MSN internet packages. I don't like being tied into a ISP that I may not like. But that is my personal opinion.

Iz--I had MSN with good dial up service in Albany, always got right on, never got bumped off. When I moved to Toledo, 3X larger city, I went from 3 to 1 available dial-up numbers. Obviously, that constituted lousy service and an unhappy customer.
The other problem became apparent at that time was that it was exceedingly difficult to remove all the MSN tentacles when you decide to get rid of it. Also, it was very difficult (impossible?) to try out another ISP (in my case Earthlink and AT&T) with MSN still there. It caused constant conflicts.
My experience and 2?. Hope it helps.

Iz, another option would be refurbished computers. Often you can find a gem with reasonable 'as new' limited warrantees.

Thanks, Ian. We got a note from my mother-in-law's uncle in Australia, sending his love and support.
I'm still having trouble wrapping my brain around it. It all seemed like so many scenes from the movies. One thing I still cannot watch is the shots of all those people hanging out the windows of the WTC towers, driven out by the fire. And falling. Horrible, horrible, horrible.
All those people. My God.
I'm still waiting to find out if any of the people I knew at the Pentagon were casualties.
I wish I could think of something comforting to say. Yesterday I kept waiting to wake up and find out it was all a nightmare.

Been thinking lately about the WTC towers in movies over the past few years. One that comes to mind is the re-make of King Kong. Remember that one? There must have been many that featured the towers but my mind is a blank other than the above mentioned film. Probably more will come to mind after I post this.

i always thought that B5 was in stationary orbit above Epsilon. but, in any case, if you think a little thing like what's in the script would change crash's mind, you don't know crash. obviously, what you've proven is one of the following: someone edited jms' text to make it wrong; jms was subtly trying to point out that ivanova knows nothing about physics; the word "orbit," as used by ivanova, actually means "not in orbit."

A friend of mine sent me this message and I thought you all might like to read it.
A World War II combat veteran tells NewsMax.com that our soldiers prevailed in D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge because they were trained to think on their feet: If a sergeant fell on the battlefield a quick-thinking private would immediately take his place.
Not so the Nazis, who were lost the minute their units were decapitated.
That spirit of independence and ingenuity was on display last Saturday aboard United Airlines Flight 564 in Denver.
A passenger described what happened shortly after takeoff to the Washington Times' John McCaslin, who shared this account with his readers Thursday:
"I want to thank you brave folks for coming out today," the pilot announced over the public address system. "We don't have any new instructions from the federal government, so from now on, we're on our own."
The passengers listened in total silence, McCaslin was told.
"Sometimes a potential hijacker will announce that he has a bomb. There are no bombs on this aircraft and if someone were to get up and make that claim, don't believe him. If someone were to stand up, brandish something such as a plastic knife and say, 'This is a hijacking' or words to that effect, here is what you should do:
"Every one of you should stand up and immediately throw things at that person - pillows, books, magazines, eyeglasses, shoes - anything that will throw him off balance and distract his attention. If he has a confederate or two, do the same with them. Most important: Get a blanket over him, then wrestle him to the floor and keep him there. We'll land the plane at the nearest airport and the authorities will take it from there.
"Remember, there will be one of him and maybe a few confederates, but there are 200 of you. Now, since we're a family for the next few hours, I'll ask you to turn to the person next to you, introduce yourself, tell them a little about yourself and ask them to do the same."
At the end of that remarkable address, Flight 564's passengers gave their pilot a rousing round of applause.
