Anyone see that report on gas cheats on 20/20? It's bad enough that a gas station might rig their machines to short you on gas, but when they mentioned how some will have you think you purchased high octane gas while the pump delivers regular.
That's f**ked up for a boosted engine, so they can steal a couple dollars off your gas purchase.
I don't know how common it is, and it was hard to say from the report except that it has been happening.
I hope that's not true. Otherwise, I'll have to open up a can of lawsuit. I can't see how they could get away with it though. As you eluded to, with all us F/I and hi-po cars on the road that absolutely require premium? Then again, I wonder how many blown motors can be blamed on bad gas we got cheated into putting in our tanks. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif

I wanted to see that report, but missed it. From the previews I got the jist of it though. I use Chevron Supreme about 99% of the time, where they mentioned in the report? Were the gas stations privately owned? That would be the main reason I can think of for this "cheating".
PS - All Chevrons with OUT service stations are corporate owned, otherwise they are private.

I didn't see Chevron mentioned specifically, though they did say BP (the largest oil company) had revoked 3 stations licensing? to use the BP affiliation.
A Tetco station was mentioned, and a chain of privately owned stations in New York. Also a significant number were located in California. (but then these two states often lead the way, I guess).
It's apparently difficult to catch, and most states only get around to inspections yearly.
I hope Sunoco 94 Ultra is enough of a distinguishing marketing device for the company that they police its' distribution.
Actually, I'd bet that they do keep on top of that, since people using 94 octane are most likely to notice any problems with it.
I wouldn't be surpised if the "cheating" was most prevalant with mid-grade blends. Who's gonna tell the difference between 87 and 89 octane? Not Grandma Moses in her Dodge Omni!

Not that I'm trying to convince anyone who doesn't already have a J&S unit on an FI engine that they should buy one, but this is exactly the kind of problem it can help detect while heading off possible damage.
I drove my Omni up until 1995 too, when it was totaled by some guy in a van. Who hit me at a stop light. I was still in a frame of mind to drive a sensible car so I got a Pontiac Grand Am. Then a VW fox. Then a 280ZX Turbo. Then a Dodge Dakota. Sold 'em all off and got a 'Teg. Life is much better now. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

Apparently, the farther away from: New Jersey, Louisiana or Texas you live, the more expensive your gas is. That's where the big refineries are.
I don't understand why 94 octane fuel is available everywhere here in rusty pick-em-up truck country and not in SoCal.

in Ontario,OTTAWA CANADA we get Sunoco ultra 94 octane at 67.5 cents a liter, and at some Drummonds gas stations we get 100 octane for about 80 cents/liter

gas prices have finally backed down a little in texas.. 1.28/gallon for regular to 1.35 for 92..

No sweat on the Omni, I grew up in one.
My mom drove Omni's (2 of them!) from 1984 until 1995!
Talking about fearing change, my step-father has been driving a Suburu 4wd wagon since 1980! I think he's on his 4th one.
Actually, there are a number of larger refineries in the San Francisco Bay area. The problem is that _ALL_ of the stations are owned by the gas companies. There is no real competition to keep priced down since you don't have station owners battling for business. Add to that a couple of 'mishaps' at one local refinery that's kept it shut down for, what, two years now?
And then we get the added fun of fule additives like MTBE which was mandated by CARB and the California Senate. That raised the price of our gas out here, and so did oxygenation. Then MTBE was found to be destroying the enviroment so CARB and the CA Senate mandated that it be replaced with methanol, further rasing the price of our gas and making it even worse for our motors!
I love a whole lot of things about California, the politics of out fuels here is not one of them. It's enough to drive you into an electric. Actually, a fuel-cell powered electric could kick ass. Brushless DC motors can have godhead huge amounts of torque!

I tried some of that Sunoco 94 octane- it was ping city. I dumped 2 bottles of 104 in the tank, and my EGT's still read high. I had to drive around like an old lady till that crap was out of my car's system. I only use Exxon now. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
