I love Omar, but he's 33 years old, and his best days are behind him. If you can get a big time prospect or 2 for him, you have to consider it.
I don't think it's a secret that Shapiro covets Kapler. I personally believe he will be an Indian soon. I still am thinking Shuey for Kapler even up. Hart loves Shuey, and you know his penchant for relief pitchers.

I know alot of you guys like Kapler, hopefully it is not b/c of his physique,(my sister is really hoping this deal goes thru) but adding another outfielder makes little sense especially if we have to deal more young pitching.
I would not be suprised if Shapiro covets Kapler since he hired Two people from the Tigers front office in scouting director John Mirabelli and Steve Lubratich. We already added one Tiger castoff in Heath Murray who apparentley added 3-5 mph on his fastball after having his mechanics overhauled by Mike Brown. Any way here is a link from BA on the recent Ex Tiger scout that could play a role in getting Kapler .

After serving as assistant general manager for the Tigers the last six years, Lubratich was hired by the Indians as an assistant to baseball operations.
"It is going to seem a little strange," said Lubratich. "In some ways I?ll still be rooting for the Tigers, but I won?t be rooting for them to finish ahead of Cleveland."
Lubratich will be GM Mark Shapiro?s right-hand man in evaluating the Indians? minor league system and the major league roster. Lubratich will also work closely with Shapiro during discussions of possible trades.
"I?ll be Mark?s baseball guy," Lubratich said.
Shapiro and Lubratich became acquaintances over the last several years when Lubratich was working first in the farm departments with the Padres and then with the Tigers, while Shapiro was in the same role with the Indians.
When both men became assistant GMs for their respective organizations, their relationship grew. Shapiro replaced John Hart as Indians GM following the 2001 season. When Hart left to take the GM job with the Rangers, he also took several baseball advisers with him.
That left Shapiro with a void, which he filled in part with the hiring of Lubratich.
Lubratich said he is looking forward to his new job, because he?ll be able to get back to what he feels he does best: evaluate talent.
"This job fits me very well, both personally and professionally," Lubratich said. "In Detroit, I was dealing with a lot of agents and working on contracts. That was pushing me away from the baseball side of the job. This job allows me to go out and see players, and get more involved in the baseball side of it

The Dodgers are looking at Pokie Reese to be their SS. They'd love Omar. Not sure what we could get from LA. Gagne and a prospect maybe? too much? too little?
On Kaplar, I think Shapiro would be smart to get him. He's got talent. I know that the best hope is that Escobar and Bradley blossom and we are set with those 2 plus Lawton as our outfield. But having Kaplar around too is good insurance. If everything gells, great! A nice problem to have. We could move one of them to help fill another need.

Who in the league needs a shortstop? I can't really think of anyone...and remember it has to be a team that is a reasonable contender, or why would they make the trade. Oh well...I still think the only fit, well the only two fits would be Arizona and Houston. Everyone else is established, unless the Mets finally figure out Ordonez is an automatic out.:-P
but I still can't figure out what the Tribe will do with Kapler?! Right now...we have a 31 year old RF with a long term contract, a 23 year old CF who is highly regarded and a 23 year old LF who will start in AAA and for Shapiro to justify his Alomar trade, will have to make the team in 2003 and be an all-star by 2005. So where is Kapler going to fit in a couple years? This is almost a repeat of the times when we had too many young position players and as a result started making trades y'all are bemoaning. Is Kapler better then the three OFs I mentioned above? maybe now...but in one-two years?
Oh and about that 23 year old LF, would you guys be happy and think the trade works out if he is as good as Dye?

I wasn't suggesting a trade of Omar to Texas for Kapler. I was suggesting a trade of Shuey to Texas for Kapler or, Shuey and Finley for Kapler and one of their 3B prospects.
What I was referring to with Omar, was the post by Genius that Omar was being shopped. I trade Omar if you can get a top rated prospect or 2.

I guess I could live with a logjam for a year, although I think everyone knows that Branyan totally belongs as a DH since he has no idea how to play LF or 3B. I would so willing to trade Shuey and Finley for a 3B prospect and maybe Ludwick or that catcher prospect they picked up in the summer if the Tribe is out of the division race. Also there is the question...what is Snyder blooms in AAA this year, continuing the progress he seems to be making...and gets his normla 50-60 BBs with 90Ks...and the 290-310 BA and the 20 HRs and 25 doubles? Of course those are what his AAA numbers can be realistically considered...think he could take over for Burks in two years?

The Dodgers are looking at signing Reese to a one year deal. LA truly believes Cesar Izturis will be their starting SS from 2003 on. If they sign Reese to a multi-yr deal they will move him to 2b in 2003. I don't believe the Dodgers have ANY interest in Omar.

Hey, here's a scenerio that would make a deal for Kapler make sense. Ellis Burks has two years left on his contract, correct? Well, Kapler, if traded for, would assume left field every day next year. Then, in 2003, we would have Escobar coming up, which would create a small log-jam in the outfield. However, in 2004, Ellis will be gone, and Kapler, Bradley, Escobar, and Lawton could all have everyday spots again, between the 3 outfield positions and DH. Now that could make this a smart deal, don't you think?
