Fuse, this one's for you... Had to branch off of your musician jokes post and try this one on for size...
Modern Drummer started one a while back, and said they would follow up on it, but I don't think they ever did... So, I'll start it for them, and e-mail them the link to this thread once we're done with it...
You know you're a drummer if...
-you use your car's turn signal clicks as a metronome
follow along, or vote it off...
just trying to spread some humor on a gloomy Monday morning in Jacksonville, FL

-
you recognize 7 over 4 when looking at your signals verses the advanced green signal.
-
-you've ever tried walking in 7/8 instead of 4/4...or was that just me?
-
when you're trying to go to sleep at night and you have a clock that ticks and you keep doing beats in your head to the ticks...
or if you have music on in your car and when it's raining and you have your windshield wipers on and you see when the wipers are on the beat and off the beat...
-
-set aside a specific spot on your desk because it sounds like the perfect piccolo snare when struck with your pinky knuckle...
-when your car purchase hinges on if your drums will fit in the backseat/trunk (that was from Modern Drummer, but it stuck w/ me)
-
When you can't hear your clock ticking at all....
-
The clock ticking 1 is a classic!...
CP - hilarious [i had to read it 3 times b4 i understood what u were sayin!!]...
Here's a few that i can think of 4 now...
That dashboard to 1 of your old/former cars looks like the floor of the Mojave at summertime: cracks forming due to an endless, repetitive barrage of assaults from stix/pencils/pens/anything even remotely resembling drumstix over a period of time...
At bedtime, you find yourself keeping awake to that quirky, repetitive noise made by that ceiling fan hanging over your bed - keeping time to it, squeezing in triplets; 5,7, etc against 4; whatever superimnposed metric modulation you've started trying to learn lately, etc...
Timing that beep u here when a city/county truck goes into reverse...
Looking at that microwave clock-timer when it says "2:00," down to "1:01," & at "1:00" looking away, & counting it down to the end-beep to see how close to the time u were...
...& you guys thought YOU were 'anal'....

when your car is worth 1000 bucks and your 5 drumsets are worth $15,000

When all your girlfriends complain that their butts are not drums when your alone..... Ya know..... Trying to blushda on her booty....
-
Oh Lordy,
"Butts... not Drums...."
..and I thought that was just MY idea of a good time!
Also you know you're a drummer when your girlfriend tells you off for "looking at drum porn on the computer again!"
-
LOL@David Francis!!!
How friggin funny!!!
you know you're a drummer if your sole purpose on splitting the chopsticks at the chinese restaurant is to place them in the traditional grip and play on the rim of the teacup(s)...
-
...when u have to choose between that Chick Corea Elektric Band Reunion show, or taking the "ole' lady" out like u promised her, to whatever function/her fav spot; & u end up dragging her along & yelling "Quiet! Drum solo!!!!" [BIG fights b4 AND aft] ...
...u got thrown outta class because u got 1 hand on the wooden desktop, 1 on the metal front under your arse & between your legs, & both feet chimmin' along on that good-ole hollow-sound'g wood floor of that older classroom....
-
You know you're a drummer when you play paradiddles by blinking the stickings or by playing the stickings by tightening your butt cheeks.
Yikes- If know one has done this give me the phone# to the looney house NOW!!!!!
-
blake - try working out "S-O-S" [Morse Code] with your "squeeze'n'release" method...
[PS - 1-800-ASS-LOON....]
-
You know you're a drummer when you sit home on Valentines and download Vinnie and Tony Williams videos instead of going out on a date.
cry-weep-sad-awww
-

You know your a drummer when you hear a commercial and think about how you would interpret it.
You know you're a drummer when you know how Alex Van Halen got his snare sound (like anyone else on the planet gives a damn).
You know you're a drummer when you have at least one drumstick in your car.
-
- if your kneecaps are bruised from practicing flam-taps
-
...taking a hot girl to a jazz club is a distraction.
-
how did alex van halen get his snare sound?
-
You know you're a drummer when you buy a pair of shoes based on how they feel on the pedals.
Yeah! How did Alex Van Halen get his snare sound?
-
I believe he got it through what is the rage at hardware stores across the US...duct tape, lots of it. And a Ludwig, 6 1/4" metal snare.
-
You know you're a drummer when you sleep with a pair of sticks and a practice pad.
If you sleep with brushes ya got a problem. hehe
-
duct tape eh?
you're sure you're not an engineer?
just kidding...
yup,
you're a drummer....
-
Well, I am an engineer, and a drummer...I should have typed "gaffer's tape" in a nod to Steve Smith. An interview with him is the first time I heard that phrase.
If you look at old VH videos, AVH has his entire snare covered with a layer of "gaffer's" tape, like those old Duraline kevlar heads. I tried it once and got a sound similar to his.
You know your a drummer when you know what "Duraline kevlar heads" are. And those ridiculous lighted sticks. Those were godawful.
-
...every girlfriend you've ever had comments she taps now when driving!
...you search for that killer "ping" sound on them white shelves in the frozen food section when shopping at the market.
...when you had to stay after school for tapping on your desk, once again, searching for that piccolo sound in the upper corner (4th, 6th, & 9th grade thank you kindly!)
...when you tap at night on your mattress, same with the desk thing, looking for that killer sound, moving your head on the mattress in searching for the best audio quality....and then staying up for hours groovin'
...when your computer keyboard is all dinged up with fingernail marks next to the "Caps Lock" and "+" keys.
Not to harp on the AVHalen snare sound, but it is as signature as his bros. axe sound. If he had all that gaffer's tape on his head, knowing that he laid down a solid backbeat, what about his SD response? Do you think it affected his fills, or lack of double-stroke rolls or use of rudiments?
I have the Ludwig poster of Alex Live and he seems to be playing a Remo coated Black Dot with little tape on. His kit is smaller--it came out about '98. I've also seen shot where his snare had the gaffer tape place on the outside of the head in a quad shape.
For all those guys playing in classic rock cover bands, do you also find it difficult to play an AC/DC tune w/o trying add a little Dave or Vinnie in?

...you take the long way home so you can hear that killer drum finale. : )
-
You know you are a drummer if ....
you can correctly pronounce and spell "Colaiuta".
-
Well, no thanks to youse guys, I duct taped my entire snare head today(Aquarium Hi Energy), cranked both heads up, and...well...it does sound pretty cool. The response is excellent. I love the Boxy POP sound, so AVH's snare always appealed to me. It's still not excellent however...back to the blackboard.
And, drum4fun, I agree 100%...nothing worse seeing Vinnie Coleauta in large letters on the marquee at the Baked Potato! Spelling Vinnie's last name should be on every drummer's spelling test.

AVH pic
I found this pic of AVH with his snare taped up. It's possible I could be wrong, but I defintely remember seeing his anre taped up like that.
SInce I don't have the interview he did back in the 80's, I don't know if he talked about his sound. Of course, it could be the result of studio trickery. his drums sounded killer on fair Warning.

You know you're a drummer if...
...-you've ever contemplated creating a "budget" drum-rack while walking down the PVC isle at the hardware store...
(guilty as charged... )
-
-

-
LOL@helpmate... good one!!!
-
You know you're a drummer, when you catch yourself walking round the house on your own saying...
