Pais vasco is a part of spain that wants to be "liberated" although noone's opressing them.

So they do all sort of terrorist actions in order to become a "free" state. A bask is someone from pais vasco and ETA is their "liberation" organization. ie, a terrorist group..

No one has no proof it was really eta though, so that's why I suspect you'll hear bush lullying about al quaida or whichever arab...

Bush lying wouldn't make any sense, his reputation is damaged now because they suspect it was the Al Quaida (what with the tape and everything) and will now loose Spain's support when he already was short on allies.

So I doubt Bush set up the concept that it may have been the Arabs. But I do find the whole Arab set up with the tape suspicious because it had the ETA's fingerprints all over it, using the materials they always use. If it smells like ETA and looks like it ETA.. it probably is...

Odds are we'll never know.

I don't know the exact situation with the basks but I think it's dangerous to label an entire people terrorists, not all basks support what the ETA does and since sept. 11th most opressing countries have gotten a free hand in declaring any freedom fighter organisation terrorists, like Russia and Chechnya or Indonesia and many of the islands that would like to seperate from Indonesia. Which ARE opressed people, which is not to say I condone violence on any scale in any way or that I believe that the basks are being opressed in any way shape or form because I'm sort of assuming there'd be some form of media attention for the situation of the basks before and since the whole ordeal in Madrid. Spain is to poor to opress anyone anyway and they've already been through the whole dictatorship deal.

Just now I hear on the news that Spain is withdrawing their troops from Iraq, so I doubt Bush is happy that they think Al Quaida did it now...

Hear hear. And paranoid as I am, now I suspect that the PSOE supported whichever terrorist group was behind it just to win the election... O_o

But like I said, I'm paranoid....

You might even suspect anti- war protestors cause they knew then the election outcome would change and Spain would leave Iraq, which I don't agree to be the best solution. Once you start a war finish the shit you started cause if we all pull out of Iraq now it's going to turn into an abandoned country like Afghanistan and then we'll have a whole new set of problems with lots of angry Iraqi's feeling abandoned.

There's much to be said against Saddam but at least he had the fundamentalists on a strong leash (aka in front of a firing squad).

I get the paranoia Whyatt, these days you don't know who the hell to trust. In the US they're actually starting an investigation into the Bush government because they make television items about things like their healthcare policy which t.v. station are paid to air as 'news items' eventhough the journalists in these items are actors and the whole thing was sponsored and written by the government. They're going to invistigate whether this might classify as propaganda or not.

In one of my classes they also showed the US invasion of Somalia a couple of years ago which happened on a beach at a very strange hour in Somalia which was actually US prime. There's also this huge advertisement agency that helped 'promote' the last two Gulf Wars, during the first (actually second, Iran- Iraq was the first) war there was a lady on t.v. claiming the Iraqi's had even taken the babies out of maternal care units in the hospitals and left them to die. Research showed she was the daughter of embassador of Kuwait and wasn't even in the country when Iraq invaded it. During the last war any journalist trying to work in Iraq without using the US Army satellite network was arrested and deported out of the country.

As a general rule highly religious folk tend to be very much "I'm right, your wrong, goto hell!" and Bush fits that description pretty damm well.

Does that put Bush on the same level of bin Laden and his elk? No. Last I knew Bush hasnt gone off and ordered the execution of all Muslims in the world.

Personally I do think Bush was correct in ordering the Military to invade Iraq (which of course Bush's main reason, WMD's, was total bullshit) no matter the consequences. One look at the UN Security Council tells you who was "benefiting" from Sadam staying in power (for the last 11 years) and who would loose out if the US went in and kicked the Bathists out power.

I do however think the Spanish People really screwed themeselves over in the long run. I can understand their pain and fear because it wasnt to long ago I was listening on the radio and watching on TV as 2 thousand of fellow citizens (give or take since ive now forgotten the exact number) died between the point of two planes striking some buildings and the said buildings collapsing while police and firmen where trying to save lives. I remember by the end of the day all the government representatives being told to go home and a few Marine officers that where on site working on contracts with us at the time mentioning that someones ass is going to fry. Now THAT is scary shit.
But right now I'm sitting here and looking at Spains reaction. Election of a government that is more intrested in playing politics than helping out in a country that needs all the help it can get? If Al Queda or one of the other Islamic terrorist groups is behind the bombings then basically the Spanish people just rewarded them. Who knows. But it's obvious what I think. I hope I'm wrong.

I have a question for all of you. You've all made very clear and good points, but you all still seem shocked or appalled by the committed acts of violence. Why in this day age when it has finally become so clear that Humanity has been preparing to wipe itself out since they first took up the club, would violence still shock or appall you?

Cause after all we're still human? Death and destruction still can get to us. I mean, I'm a big cynic but I still have feelings. Rage being one of them.. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Also, I happen to live in such a protected environment that I can pretty much ignore all the wars, genocides and famine if I want to until it gets smacked in my face like that. And most of the time I'm too occupied with tying my own strings together to pay any emotional notice to what happens in the "far-away" world. That's basically also why I get so thoroughly pissed off when something like this happens close to home...

Basically, it's just another thing when it "could have been you".

Second part of the question. Do you miss when human achievement wasn't overshadowed by the violence surrounding? That's for all of you again.

On this one I can honestly say that I have no idea. As far as I can remember news & media have always been more concentrated on catastrophy, death, divorces and gossip than on "real" news or, as you say, human achievment. Everybody can't aspire to reach their dreams, be a rock star or baywatch model, cause then there'd be no business.

The entertainment/fear industry serves to keep our minds in control so that we can stand ur lives of vasting them during the week working, getting shitass drunk during the weekends and spend the rest of our time in front of the TV. If everyone walked around fighting for their dreams then there'd be noone slaving away serving the fat cats their steaks and rolls royces..

But to answer your quiestion, of course it'd be nice with a society that acknowledged personal development, but that's not in the interests of those in control of what gets displayed in the media. Plus, people are too jealous and vain for that...

To be quite honest I wasn't very shocked this time around, 9/11 seriously freaked me out because of the whole live on t.v. thing but it probably wouldn't have as much if the whole thing hadn't been documented in detail from start to finish. But mostly it's a completely selfish thing, all I (and most other people, presumably) think when I see shit like that or hear about it is that I'm really glad it didn't happen to me.

But yeah I know: shit happens and is generally inflicted by human beings upon other living things. And no I don't have any faith in the sustainability of humanity in it's current condition at all nor do I have faith in some 2012 miracle change where we all suddenly become nice nonselfish human beings. It's my main reason for not wanting to reproduce. And fuck, my life hasn't even been that bad.

I think human achievement has always been overshadowed by violence and distruction. People always forget that bad things have lead to good things (and vice versa) though, so I don't know if it's that bad.

Whyatt, don't forget that the media and it's audience are in a symbiotic relationship and if people ain't gonna watch the media ain't gonna broadcast it. Apparently we have a hankering for suffering. Micheal Moore asked the producer of COPS why they didn't want to do a more positive show instead of a show on (predominantly) black people getting arrested and the producer was really honest, saying he'd love to do it but no one'd watch.

I just watched the movie 44 minutes, the story of the north hollywood shoot out. and although the guys were foreigners, they brought a community together for a bit. we need that again, yeah 9/11 happened, but it should be home brewed.

maybe then someone in the big house will realize that america needs to work on its own problem before we try to run other countries.

I mean shit happen's like this in the world everyday, but you don't always hear about it, due to once agian drawing back to the media. Now let's stay focused here, I may live in a small as city compared to some of you. But there are still times when I am afraid of somebody or group of somebody's doing or acting out in terrorist form's. People like the god damned White Suprmicist's here. I know more people including myself should be more shocked and appalled by violence even in today's society. But living in America violence kind of just goes hand in hand. The slaughtering of Indians, British, and then even ourselves just over claims for land and rights. And that's just 200 some odd years ago. You look at more recent times, 5 wars, a missle crisis, the KKK, the Black Panthers, terrorist attacks by American's, terrorist attacks caused from those outside the US, Columbine, and even just the day to day low key violence, bar fights, highschool fights, fights for no reason, fights for someone's shoes... It wasn't TV that desensitized me to violence, it was violence that desensitized me to violence. And to me that's somewhat frightening.
