So what's the deal with chrome piston rings? I guess they wear/last longer but are there disadvantages? I would think they take longer to seat, if ever. Is there any special bore prep? Is there any advantage to non-chromed rings like faster & better seating to the bore?
I believe CHROME rings tend to have longer lasting capabilities, but are more harsh on an aluminum block and do not seal as well, they seal good, but not AS good. However, MOLY rings seem to seat very well while being easy on the cylinder walls, with the reduced longevity as compared to the CHROME ring.
If i am wrong, im sure some TECH GURU will chime in now....But im 95% sure im correct.

Honda piston rings are quite adequate for all but the most radical FI hondas.

Honda engines don't have aluminum cylinder walls, so how could the rings be hard on them?

domestics haven't since the chevy vega.
honda blocks have a very high nickle content and are very hard to wear out. That is why you can still see the original hone on a cylinder wall after 100k on most hondas. On the flip side of that because the wall is so tough, it's very hard on the bits. I had to pay a bit extra to hone my cylinder walls because of this. I choose to go w/ total seal gapless rings.

Thanks guys, but I was looking for a little more info.
I know for sure that Honda blocks have cast in steel liners - the rings do not ride on aluminum.

Chrome rings can withstand higher temps and are less prone to break under detonation. There really is no down side to chrome rings just that it might take a little longer to seat than a moly ring which is a softer material. I used Chrome Total-seal top ring and there 2-piece total seal 2nd ring system on my motor. Make sure you get a High tension oiling ring. Helps in keeping oil in the critical area around the pistion skirt at higher RPM's.
