Mods you hated?

Here's a request for info (that is not well suited to the search function, thus the question ;-): given all of you and your successes & failures getting from stock to wherever it was you were going, are there any modifications that you truly hated? That is: spent the money, DIY / had it installed, wish you didn't, took it out, burned / buried it, spat on the receipt, etc.

The reason for the question is that there are those of us lurking around who are waaay back at the beginning of the process. We're looking through all the posts, the pages, etc., but rarely do you hear someone admit "I spent money on this thing. Boy, that was dumb!" Fundamentally, by asking the stupid questions, we're hoping to avoid stupid mistakes....

#1) Didn't hate the mod, but $500 headers was a mistake. $250-$300 is better.

#2) DC Sports rear upper strut tower brace. POS show piece. Replaced (and much improved) with $8 box aluminum.

I for one think this is an excellent thread.

My Bads:

Jrsc on an automatic sohc. Could have swapped to a better engine for the $$ and have been faster.

DC short shifter. Kept missing 2nd shift. Loved the throw, didnt like the shortness of the stick itself.

Defi VSD II: This thing is purely a novelty. I bought it to keep tabs on my RPM's (no tach) and I have gone through all kinds of trouble just to keep the thing steady. Have to spend too much to get it "sitting" right.

A month after I bought the car (1995), I sold the set of stock rims for $100 and bought a set of American rims....what the hell was I thinking? The rims were heavy as hell and they literally flaked off its coating...sold it 3 months later.

2) When out and bought 17" rims w/ 40 series tire. Sure looked nice for the first months, but after that, got bent all over the place...keep it until my mechanic told me: "Your rims are fucked...I can't balance it anymore"...urghh..went back and settled for stock 15" GSR rims (1999 model).

3) Incorrectly installed the ITR swaybar..ripped the shit out of my car.

4) Bought Eurolite bulbs, blue/green whatever colored bulbs, PIA superwhite bulbs...all useless...Finally settle down with a set of real HID lights..Aaahhhh!

5) Tanabe G-Medallion full exhaust...loud as f*ck! Sold it in 3 months...settle for stock ITR exhaust (God, I want a Mugen exhaust system please!!)

I wouldn't say hated, but utterly indifferent about performance wise, the JR BTC. Money for nothing at 6 psi.

I had piece of shit gauges(35$ on ebay) that were not cut right. Popped the needle off on the temp gauge 74$ per Acura. Black center caps kept the gauges from moving. stuck at 0 rpms and 0 mph.

An akimoto intake on my 1.5l 88 crx dx (in 95).. it did nothing but make noise, and was blue.. I was also told by the guy that sold it to me that "oh thats good for 10-15hp on that motor!" I guess its the same as lightspeed's header LOL, quote:"20-25 hp to the WHEELS!"

2. That's it. Have been lucky. Everything else works OK...

Oh, the Mugen thermostat/cap. $$$$$$$$. But, if you are beating on your car, they are great. At idle in hot weather, not so great (leave your A/C on in traffic; makes both fans spin all the time and keeps your motor cool). So, was it worth the cash? No. But I like them. Besides, I get to say that I have Mugen parts on my car http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

I LOVE MY DC SHIFTER. So there.

Evil evil Mugen thermostat. Didn't open and caused a perfectly good coolant hose to burst.

Hmm.. what else. Evil evil Comptech cat back exhaust. Developed a nice little crack right at the resonator.

Oh yes.. Evil evil Air Mass headers. Support bracket does NOT line up

I'm sure I could go on.. but work calls.

For the strut bar fix, remove the SC bar, bolts and washers (leave the brackets) and replace them with a 1" square box aluminum bar from home depot (cut to proper length). Drill holes in it and use appropriate bolts, washers and nuts. You're done.

Here's my HUGE list:
-AEM intake (boy that thing sucked for FI)
-RS akimoto intake (good back then, but now I have a icebox. Oh well, its on my truck now! Roarrrrrr....!)
-17" axis rims w/S02PP's! (got the rims for cheep, but still I hate them)
-engine bay steel braided line covers (need I say more)
-engine bay red tube covers (need I say more)
-gsr cam for testing (yeah waist of money)
-toda cam gears (did nothing on the dyno)
-msd 6BTM (worthless POS)
-high flow cat (test pipe is better)
-all the show and looks stuff. Yeah its cool, but I'd rather remove it all and buy something that gives power
and the list goes on..........

I have a few:

1) Jacob's Electronics "Pro Street" ignition with coil and wires... what a total Piece of Shit. This thing did nothing but suck power from my motor... and had pretty flashing lights in the cockpit for WOT accelleration.

2) Venom 400 control module... I had this before I got the blower and all it did was piss off the stock ECU. Lost 2/10ths in the quarter mile with it on !!!

buying an automatic civic ex and putting mods on it.

i actually don't really regret this because it was my introduction into the import performance culture. i learned a lot of stuff from working on this car and i'm even getting some seat time in autocrosses with it.

BUT, the automatic sucks and the EX is pretty slow. i will be getting a nice new teg GSR within the next two months. it's going to be stick and supercharged! no more bottom half auto-x finishes!

I started out in the import scene just like you... I bought a '94 Del Sol Automatic SOHC VTEC Si... and even with a supercharger on it, the best 1/4 mile pass it ever made was a 15.32 !!! This motivated me to get into the Hybrid scene... and I am sooooo very glad that I did. The difference in performance from what I had to what I have now is truly amazing.

By the way: the Del Sol is getting a GSR/5 spd. transplant... complete with a Supercharger and all of the important goodies !!!

I too have a few:

EBC green stuff brake pads.. they are worthless POS that needed to be replaced after 3 months. And dont for one minute believe that they are dust free as they claim.

Cross drilled rotors. They suck monkey balls... they cracked with in 4 months of usage. Stay stock or slotted instead.

emblems, piaa lights of any kind, altezzas, aem intake, tenzo exhaust, dc short shifter, tokico shocks,

its funny, ive actually made some money being an idiot. I sold my shocks for 100$ more than i paid for them... and hte emblems / lights i made like 50$ on.. same with the shifter, made like 15$... but i lost 50 on the exhuast.

now i drive a 100% stock car, waiting a good mod - a turbo... i wont have to complain abotu that http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'll second that about the EBC Greenstuff (sorta). They did provide better braking performance compared to the stock pads, there's no doubt in my mind of that. But they dust like crazy, couldnt keep the wheels clean for more than 2-3 days.

that would be correct sir. The fuel rails does NOT suck monkey balls. The Manifold however does suck monkey balls, on a naturaly aspirated application.
