well steve, looks like this vinnie story will stir the pot! i have heard a few minor stories about the trouble that can happen if you record a vinnie clinic.it kind of relates to the topic i posted a while back about vinnie not sharing some knowledge with us mortals. that newsgroup story was especially disappointing as far as his legend goes(hmmm.. buddy rich might be laughing his ass off at all of this!). i've met MANY 'name'drummers over the years and everyone was gracious(actually ed shaunessy{sic} gave me a masterclass in '87, and he was a bit of a masterass),and i recieved knowledge from them all.it is a damn shame vinnie behaved like that.sounds like total cokehead behavior to me.what did every body think of this tale? steve, what did you feel about this story? hey vinnie if you catch wind of this:if you feel like "god has provided you this gift",and you are "grateful to the drumming community" for your ascension to greatness(you do deserve that obviously) why not release a multi-video collection about your drum thang.you have a ridiculous amount of endorsements to make it fly.plus you GOTTA know it would fatten up your wallet. you know i do not give a shit if this story about you happened over 10 years ago, your legion of fans(you know there are many) deserve a little more respect than that that story reveals.though you have worked hard and have got paid;a % of that $ came from me and many fans of yours.you need some karmic cleansing vinnie.lol.thanx 4 letting me rant a little.lets put it this way-why is the greatest living drummer of our time acting like a sucky-baby guitarist in regards to retaining non profit recorded clinics and such. we have helped you climb;and we can totally stop purchasing all your major recording endeavours.in this day and age,ESPECIALLY after the sept.11 b.s.,that our heroes can't be true/real leaders in their chosen field.perhaps my rant sounds selfish,but it is out of true repect and love of vinnie.........much love------beats

i found the story pretty amusing. I think vinne is cool with sharing his info because if he wasn't he wouldn't give so much detail in clinic exerpts that steve has posted on mp3's.
i can think of a few reasons why he might be pissed if ppl video him but in the end its up to him.

The truth is Vinnie doesn't need a reason to not want to be videod. It's his right I guess as much as I would like to have more of them out there. He obviously has an idea of what he wants to be "out there" in terms of stuff that he's on.
I find it interesting that of all the Karizma songs from the MD show, HE chose those 3 on there. I know for a fact they played a whole set and Vinnie had final say on what made the MD tape. I was kind of disappointed with that tape actually.

No.
The DVD has the same tunes with an option to change camera angles sometimes. It has all he performaces from the whole weekend from both videos though.

Okay, take this one with a grain of salt, but it comes from an engineer from Chick's studio...
One time, Vinnie was supposed to be at a studio session at 9:00 a.m. (early, even for a jazz gig). Hours passed. The musicians were ripshit and the producer was on the phone with the union. Twelve o'clock rolls around, and Vinnie strolls in, wearing a Superman suit and looking sweaty. Everybody's speechless--pissed and confused. Vinnie sits down, blazes through the songs for two hours, and splits with barely a word spoken.

I suspect those personality quirks that frustrate us about Vinnie are also those same things that give him the ability to play the way he does. Like a math genius or art prodigy.

Probably bullshit, sure, but that people so wantonly spread nutty rumors about the guy is a testament to his legendary status. (I hope that someday people relate stories of me doing nutty things dressed like a superhero.) It's reminiscent of the stories spread about Sinatra and other showbiz greats. Spreading wacky stories, not imitation, is the most sincere form of flattery in my book.

I have a two friends who know Vinnie casually and have hung with him several times. I've seen pictures of them hanging at a bar with Vinnie acting silly, etc. Without sharing pot stirring details, they have the highest respect for Vinnie as an artist and drummer but have witnessed stranger and more outrageous behavior than the Superman story on a couple of occasions. Neither has witnessed any bad temper from him and said he was gracious and great to hang with.

I think vinnie is pretty cool about keeping his vibe to himself, he has every right. Look at Led Zeppelin, all u can get is the song remains the same and some shite bootlegs, but look at how many Bonham emulators there are. If i was as gifted as vinnie, id keep it to myself too. God never tells pple how he made the universe. Theres learning other peoples chops, and theres taking the piss. Some of you clones will be getting vinnie plastic surgery next. 'Carter' has a point. Maybe Vinnie doesn't want to see a ton of clones. Look and listen to the clones Gadd had back in the eighties. Guys would dress like him. Play a Yamaha kit like him and even mimiced his facial expressions. Some weird psychological stuff is going on in someone's head when that happens. I think the best players have aquired chops more organically than sitting down and purposefully copying someone elses signature licks and using them in the same spots of music their hero does.IMHO

Everyone has their influences, I think the difference is being a carbon copy/rip-off or taking those influences and interpereting them into something personal and unique. This in additional to your own stuff that you come up with.

Going back to the MD 2000 video with vin. on the last track of the 3, vinnie looks like he's grinning away almost laughing at the start of landau's solo. at this point it is hidden by the camera's angle. im interested to know if any body whos got the DVD can switch angles at this point to give a front on view.
BTW if vinnie is laughing do u think its cause landou is mimiking the last phrase of garfields solo or because he comes in 4 bars late while he's messing with his fx pedals? LOL

did anyone see vinnie play seven days with sting on david letterman.. while playing vinnie is having a conversation with someone off stage.. he is shaking his head many times... he seems to be saying that he maybe cant hear or something.. he then makes a face kind of like oops oh well.. he didnt seem all pissed off.. im from iowa and dont have the access that guys in L A have.. you can see vinnie alot.... whats up what r your experiences....

Yeah, I saw that Letterman epidode--very cool. I like how sting says, "C'mon Vinnie!" toward the end during that drum fill. As for seeing Vinnie, I'm seeing him tomorrow night at the Wounded Spud (the Baked Potato), so I'll let you know.

Scratch that. It's sold out. NAMM's in town, and that's the show EVERYBODY's going to. Man, if I was Vinnie's manager, I would have booked the band at a larger venue, like the Wiltern; I bet they could have sold it out. Guess I'll have to see the Vin-man next month.
