how can you tell you're pinging?
my car's very loud i/h/e and straight pipe...
would i hear it? I'm running at 16btdc on 8psi and a btc...static set to 14....upp'd to 16 by BTC knob.
should I be pinging with this setup anyways?

You can't tell if you're pinging at WOT... without a safeguard from J&S. Look into the version 0, 1 and 2 from them. Sometimes you can see detonation on a dyno plot, where it will make the torque numbers very jumpy. But generally you need a knock sensor with a display.
so you cannot hear it?
i heard it sounds like nickels falling onto the ground...very noticeable.. =P
i'm kinda chicken crap to push it any higher than 16btdc tho...hehe

Find a steep hill (Like around the Alum Rock Evergreen area) on a hot day with your timing advanced. Do a run up that hill in 4th gear using 1/2 to 3/4 throttle and you will not only hear detonation you can feel it jolting your whole car. I would stay away from any type of detonation as it's slowly killing your motor. Starting from the rod and main bearings to your ring lands. A good indication of nasty detonation is damaged spark plugs.

i never jolt..the car pulls hard all the time...smoothly....
will all pinging jolt the car? is it audible over my car?
also....anyone ever experience this? when i'm partial throttle and the rpm hits vtec engagemnt...the car jerks hard...and feels like it's using my clutch to slow the car....if i floor it i fly into vtec and chirp harrdd....
i used to get this when i was NA and hitting high 13s....is this just an amplified version of it because i have more power now?

The acceleration will only be jerky if you have consistant detonation(lets say for more than a full second at various rpms). A blip here and there is hard to spot out. Only a knock senser can hear the faintest detonation. Detonation does not come in a single form as there is light to very nasty depending on how high the cylinder pressure spikes. If your car's exhaust is real boomy or raspy then you might not hear any detonation.
my gsr has a knock sensor as you already know i'm sure...and i also have my btc wired up..and running rich...
what are the chances my 8psi setup is pinging with these conditions and 16 degrees btdc?

I just got done with my install http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif JRSC ITR and I am haveing no detonation at all!!! I have the 8lbs pully andmy timing is set at 16 BTDC also, My BTC is set at 12 o'clock. I guess the only to tell if you are getting det is on a dyno.
If you are still using the stock fuel injectors I would not run my car very hard all the time. Stock injectors on a 8psi turbo set-up would gaurentee a blown motor sooner or later. Some other guys here are lucky but some others wished they did not play with fire. I don't trust the stock O2 sensor for shit as many have blown their motor while the Autometer guage was dead rich. RC 310's should do fine unless you plan to boost more down the road. The only protection is the J&S safegaurd; well worth the $550 for a setup like yours.
The truth about detonation:
Detonation, ping, and knock are very different phenomena. As I am not well versed in combustion dynamics, I will not expand on that thought, just know they are different.
Detonation is a silent killer. If you ever get the chance to 'hear' it occur, it's because your engine blew up.
What you do get to hear are the events leading up to that point. Sometimes described as 'marbles in a cup'. If you hear this, get out of the throttle immediately.
GSR's and ITR's have knock sensors already, but they are limited in the amount of timing they can pull. You should have some form of boost retard on all FI engines. Buy an Ultra Safeguard or BTM if you don't already have one. Set the retard between .5 and 1 deg/lb. Boost happy.
