first of all - being born british is to win the lottery of life. britain has given so much to the world.the bbc sets the standard and always has done for television, william caxton (the first to translate books into english),faraday (electrical generator/motor),watt and trevithick(steam engines)telford (roads),isambard kingdom brunel(needs no intro),bell(telephone,telegraphy)- the list is endless! imperialism has been normality in years gone by and britain shouldnot feel guilty in having a successful imperial past just because others have failed. no country is now under british imperial rule that wishes to be a soveriegn republic. as for the comment about not being proud to be white, then a think it is sad when british citizens show a reluctance to show pride in their culture as long as you don't impede upon others. socialism is a spent political force and although the ideology remains it would be naive to think that it will ever become a significant doctrine in britain with the cenralisation of politics. i have enjoyed reading matt's contadictory comments and however much he may try to deny it his sychophantic reaction has highlighted his socialist beliefs.the disintegration ot the union would have an adverse effect on the the political and economic stabilty of the component countries. i do agree with your point to a certain extent on the failure to recognise england as a nation and the fact that we haven't been given are own parliament when scotland and wales have recieved devolved parliaments( northern ireland is an exceptional circumstance).i think that in order for britain or any country for that matter to operate sufficiently there needs to be a political convention based n practicality which in my opinion is conservative right wing moderate nationalism. on immigration i have to take a negative stance and agree with the points made by enoch powell and i think that if the government during that period had the benefit of hindsight they would have agreed aswell. and before anyone stands on a soap box with and spouts politically correct propaganda enoch powell was not a racist but just had a certain view of society. 'the main function of statesmanship is to provide a safe guard against preventable evils'. i do agree with category c's perceptions although i think the choice of words was suspect.

i would lik to emphasise the fact that all british citizens should feel pride in being british regardless of their roots.as has been stated before immigration isn't a matter of race directly but a matter of practicality. furthermore i hasten to add that the monarchy actually generates more money than it consumes and is a symbol of british heritage. also i don't pledge any allegiance to the government in general unless i agree with their policies but rather to the british way of life and our unwritten consitution.we do have a constitution by the way but rather than being written it is bound through precedent.that leads me to another point in that i disagree with the proposal of a written constitution as this would render it too rigid as reinforced by the fact that the american constitution has only been amended 17 times in its entire history.it would also cause further problems in that - who would construct it and how it would be amended etc etc etc.and for the record it is not blind partriotism that i advocate as that is bordering on dangerous but the belief that right wing politics(no that does not mean extreme although many liberals would have you believe that)is the most appropriate way for a country/nation to operate on.

This on going national pride saga has just become a silly game of intellectual ping pong and is now going nowhere. It's totally obvious where we both stand, and it's equally obvious that neither of us is going to change our minds. You believe that it's a (quote) "fact that all British citizens SHOULD feel pride in being British regardless of their roots". One look at the website that you are associated with, HERE, and it's easy to see what influences you. It is not a "fact" that we "should", be proud to be British, it is a matter for each individual to decide for themselves. And I excersise my democratic right, not to be proud of the label put on me at birth, for the reasons I have oulined clearly in various other posts.
Why is that so difficult for you to understand and/or accept?

To highlight a few points, the first part of your statement is VERY arguable. To begin with the BBC, it is a private/public owned company and is not connected with our Government. Therefore, its FOUNDERS gave that Corporation to the world. It was their hard work/effort. NOT Britains. The same can be said for the rest of those people. Their achievements are their own. NOT Britains. Bell was not imbued with 'British Spirit' when he invented Telephone, he was just fucking smart/lucky.
And Secondly, What has being White got to do with being British? Fuck all. Dont know who this is aimed at, and it may have just been a poorly elaborated point on your part. If so, disregard this statement.

Also, Britain, England, or the UK has NO constitution. Unwritten Constitution=No Constitution. You cannot live by a written agreement, which is the whole Idea of a Constitution, that doesn't exist. We don't need one, because over 2000 years of Kings/Queens killing each other until it got boring have replaced it. The US needed one because otherwise they would be killing each other for prolly 1000's of years before a suitable state of existence would be achieved. This convinced them into complying with their President/Office, by being given rights as opposed to allowed freedoms (which we have, and can be taken away) and is more than likely the cause of their attitude towards the world they have today.
Next up, Ants. There is indeed a Wrestling Federation on Uk TV. It is EWC (not ECW) and is under contract with ITV, NOT BBC, to be shown on there network somewhere. This should appear on your TV's sometime in 2003 but cant give you a possible date on it.
