I was coming back from my fiance's house tonight and decided to take the long way home so I could speed through some backroad twisties. As I come around one of the bends I see a car about 1/8 mile ahead so I slow down. I didn't come up on his rear until he stopped at the stop sign ahead. It was a blue '92 or so cavalier with some cheapass Pepboys Brospeed muffler w/3" tip and some american racing wheels. He sat there at the stop sign and wouldn't move but he was revving his engine. Then he put his car into reverse real quick and came at me! I was like, "whoa, what's this guy doing?" Then he starts going real slow on the main road so I swerve a little behind him and honk at him. We get to a straight and I pass him in the oncoming traffic lane and he TRIES to keep up with me to prevent me from getting over without success. I pull way ahead of him and then decide to slow down to more sane speeds. I thought I lost him but there he was skidding around the bend behind me trying to catch up. "OK, you wanna play?" Once again I pull way ahead of him with ease. I turn down a sidestreet that hooks up with my street and kill my lights. As I go around the bends of the street I can see the light of his headlights in the trees trying to track me down. Finally, I get on my street and slow it down again. I can once again see the beam of his headlights as he's searching for me still. I duck into the private driveway that my neighbors and I share and park my car behind my house in our driveway. I get out and hear him zoom by the front of the house. Great, lost him. I go inside and I hear him driving by real slow. I looked out of my bedroom window and I see him looking out his window at everyone's cars parked out front. After that pass, he made 4 more slow passes. Good thing the neighbors have a privacy fence that hides my car from view if he should venture down the street that joins the private driveway. My car isn't visible from the front either which is also good. I have an idea where the little punk lives so if my car gets vandalized I'll know who to rough up. Part of me thinks that I should have pulled off somewhere and confronted him. The other part of me thinks that it was better to lose him and not risk any kind of trouble. What would you guys have done?

Sounds like a drunk, or out of his head. If he really did endanger your life, then you do not owe him any favours : You may only get that last chance to protect yourself, and your community from that PMF. Call it extreme, but if that had happened to myself or my family, then I would phone it in to the police (from a call box, dont give your name) give the guys plate, and if you want him to avoid your route home in future : tell the police that you think he is stoned & packing a piece. The police will treat him with the contempt he deserves.
Maybe this is extreme, but you dont owe him ANY favours. F*ck him.
Personally, I have seen friends buried as a result of someone elses careless driving, and the effect that it has had on their families. I am quite sure that your family do not deserve to suffer because some PMF has had a bad day.
A word to the wise - unfortunately in this case, the guy has your location down to a block or 2, in future, if it happens again, drag him to some other part of town before you lose him.

if you fealt threatened, which it seems you did, it is concidered aggrivated assault with a deadly weapon by the cops... all you have to do is call the police with the tag number and report the incident and he will be charged with fealony assault...
a friend of mine passed a lady too close and she called it in and that is what happened to him... the cops said as she fealt threatened and arrested him at his dinner table in front of his kids a week later, he spent a couple weeks in jail before he got out (with comunity service, fines, probation) technically if that guy has priors he could do 2-10 (in Texas at least)

Just to offer a counterpoint to the above replies, and being somwehat of a hothead, I would have confronted the assailant.
I've done this before (more than once) and again, more that once, have found myself pretty lucky. The problem is that you never know what you are up against... (for example, what I thought was an easy fistfight with a middle aged guys truned into a two against one, they armed with a hammer, which incidentally I won because they underestimated the power of a cop issue MagLite). I would assume that by the description of the "Cavalier" young man (just a little funny joke there) that he was drunk or as somebody said, you are the guy who stole his girl. Personally, I would have gotten out of my car and kicked those guys in the teeth. On the other hand, maybe I would have been shot.
I think you did the right thing though. Next time, give me a call and we'll go racing and when this happens again, I'll stuff the "Cavalier Kid" into his exhaust tip.

I would not have gone home, one guy was following me and swerving behing me and even stopped and floored it after my car (i never sped up) and stuff....i just drove around until i lost him ....it happened to me like 3 times, one time (i think different peopel) follwed me back to my HS and waited around the corner for me to come out of the parking lot....i didnt want trouble so i drove out , but with 3 other freinds to follow me out...at a traffic light one of my friends stopped on a yellow so the followers couldnt follow me, i really dont know what i woulda done if any of the guys following me follwed me and confronted me.
damn hoodlums.

Maybe I'm just stupid, but I get road rage REEEEAL easy on sh*t like that.
I look at it this way:
#1 I have the obvious faster car, therefor I can do whatever I want, and he cant catch me.
#2 I have full coverage and need a body kit, let the little bitch rearend me.
#3 I try not to think about guns... suppose I should.
#4 talk mad trash, it pisses them off even more, and then they cant back it up. Especially when you've done nothing wrong to begin with. What are they gonna do, get out of the car doin 80?
#5 have fun with it, you have a faster car, he's nothing but a PAB (Punk Ass Bitch) so talk trash, give the finger, and be sure to laugh at him A LOT.
#6 when all else fails stop in the road, and when he gets out, run his sorry ass over.
(Road rage is not recomended and is a severe mental condition from which I suffer, that will probably end up getting me killed. If confronted with this in a court of law, I will plead the fifth.
The good thing is, I tend to have more patience now before I snap than I used to, now its three strikes and your out. In my defense: the police cant do that much if they didnt see it, to the offending party or myself, so its hard to call the cops and get true justice if some guy follows you and cusses, all they can do is slap his hand. Its up to YOU to piss his ass off and have fun at his expense. "A life of fear is not a life... so live a little")

In the UK we have a small army of nylon suited salsemen who drive up and down the country selling their shit, and they think that they own the roads...
Travelling south on a national 3 lane route, and some guy in a Ford Mondeo started getting real agitated about my existance. I cant remember what started it, but it ended with him shaking his fist at me, and me mouthing the words "Fuck You" back at him before blowing him a kiss, and smiling. 'light blue touch paper and retire', the guy just went APE!, I saw him turn purple, before he did an emergency stop through 3 lanes of moving traffic, on to the hard shoulder. Never saw him again - and I still dont know why I blew him a kiss . I guess that pretending you dont give a f*ck about some pricks tantrum can be the best line of defence.

Here is my latest road rage story.
I was leaving my house and turned onto the main road. A car was infront of me. I dont remember the make it wasnt anything special. well anyway. we came up to the traffic light I in a C230 Kompressor Mercedes. I was about to turn right they were turning left. Next thing i know they jump to the right lane and cut me off. Not really thinking anything of it i dont ride there ass or anything. We turn right. Come to the next traffic light I get in the turn lane to turn left. Again they cut me off. Beginning not to think this is accedental I get sort of perturbed. We continue down this road they going slow and speeding up repeadely. I knew they were fucking with me. Pissing me off. We get to the end of the road where there is a krystals on the right they pull in and pull next to the road side of the parking lot Both people in the car have there middle fingers up at me. I look back and the African gentalmen is mouthing obesenities at me. I of course return the Gestures and roll my window down and began screaming at him. Telling him to Get is "stupid fucking ass" over here and i will fuck his world up. He said screamed back. I told him that if he knew what was good for him he would leave it alone. Starting to get a little uneasy about the situation and fearing for my life. I reach into the Center console and pull my .38 Special out and sit it in my lap expecting the worse to occur. He being in a better position with the parking lot raised higher than the road he could see in the car and see what i had. His eyes got really big and he began to back up and got into his car and drove off. At that point the light changes and i take off. I did not intend for him to see the pistol i wasnt using it as a intemidation factor type thing as it worked out. I was just getting it out incase he pulled something stupid. Thank God he didnt do anything cause i would have hated to kill someone on a sunday. I might have felt bad about it later on. but Probably not. I hate people who Do things like that. And it happens quiet frequently around here unfortunately people are idiots. Thats why i carry a pistol. You never know what will happen. And its better to have a fighting chance than to be a victim.

Acctually that guy better be glad i wasnt in the Sol. As a few of you local guys know I keep a Colt Python .357 Magnum Next to my seat loaded with Hollow points. Its nickle plated and has a 4 inch barrel. Its and intimidation gun Its freakin huge. Not like a Desert Eagle or anything but still. its not something you would wanna meet someone in a back alley and they had one. I figure if i pull it on some one they will have a heart attack before the bullet reaches them.
