Here are my pictures as I promised. The .wav files are on mylaptop at home so we'll have to update that later on.

Eeewwww...looks bad. I can't wait for your WAV files though.

Way too hot! You must have driven it a lot after the problem set in. Most times detonation will leave the pistons a lot cleaner than those. The crud is probably baked oil.
It looks to have some exiting the exhaust in that first picture. Good for killing mosquitos, but bad for the pocketbook.
I feel for you big time. Shit like that isn't any fun.

Sil, this damage looks just like Will's... only he had a single piston erode instead of two. This is long-term leaning out... primarily caused by long-term high RPM running (You wouldn't be guilty of any high-altitude street racing would you ???). Your piston tops don't look bad at all (color and deposits)... I think you did a good job of minimizing the damage. Inspect the rods when they come out: if any are really dark in color, they have been compromised.
Lastly, post a picture of the head - a close-up of cylinders 3 and 4... I want to see the valves and chambers.

Wow, that was creepy symbolism... I am talking about the death of your motor in post number "187" !!!
Again, Sil... My heart is heavy for you and your car.

More pics of the head and valves coming soon. I'm sorry i didn't do it sooner but I've been busy at work between planning this rebuild and getting on here http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

What exactly causes this to happen?? I want to have the same mods done to my car, what do you think the problem was and what can be done to avoid it??
sorry about the stupid questions just curious?!!
thanks

If you've read through the threads on this incident, you will know there were a few factors. The critical factor was that FUEL was coming up short, period. This is why JRCIVIC and others are developing a fuel replacement to be safer and gain power. The two other major factors were that the J&S sensitivity was turned nearly off and the 6BTM was also not retarding timing (I set both this way to see what would happen). This incident was avoidable without the fuel fix but who knows. I still blame my setting things VERY risky for this happening. Basically, don't f' around at 8 PSI. Stick with what's been safe or watch out.

Wow. I love your wav file, until you blow up your engine http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif. Would you mind if I post it on my web site ? By looking at your pistons, I pretty sure that you haven't melted them in that run only, they were probably melted slowly overtime. Stock piston don't handle heat as much as aftermarket one. Pay for the extra heat coating for your new ones.

When you get it apart, can you get some close-up pics of the cylinder walls, rings, lands, and piston crown?
Thanks

Silvino, what do you mean JRCIVIC and others are developing a fuel replacement to be safer and gain power? Is it just to have more fuel that is nessary, or not to run so lean?
thanks for the insite

I was thinking a bit more about why my pistons looked hammered for longer than that run and I forgot that I had been runing the car lean for a LONG time even at 6 PSI. Remember that my wiring that a local shop said was ok, wasn't. That caused the car to be hammered without enough fuel for a LONG time. That probably is what damaged the engine overall. The run that melted the pistons was a combination of too much timing, running too many hard runs back to back and the biggest factor, leaning out at a high gear in a high RPM. All those things combined killed me. Take away the improper wiring/fuel issues and I'd probably have a smooth running car still. The current idea of 255lph HP pump and stock injectors kinda works but not safe enough for me to reccomend it anymore. I say go with a Bosche pump (it can give you that high VOLUME), new injectors and the cartech FPR that JRCIVIC/RJAFFEY/LUN have been looking into. That's the right way to do it. The costs for my rebuild are begining to scare me. 5k goes right out the door real fast if you want to do things nicely. For this much money I should have saved for a used Supra and upgraded it, hehe.

The problem here is fuel pressure. I would consider injectors mandatory with anything but the standard, stock JRSC setup. One dip in voltage to the pump or a quick burp if the fuel sloshes will kill your motor in a hurry with the pump working that hard. An inline pump could work as a bandaid if you have problems tuning the larger injectors to run well at part throttle/idle. The FMU helps you keep stock driveability off WOT, but is very taxing on the fuel system components. A lot of you are investing in ignition gizmos to prevent detonation, but you would be better off running a lot more fuel with conservative timing.
Good luck with your motor. Unless you really want to go big with a power adder (and I don't think the JRSC is the right path for that) I'd be tempted to pick up a used shortblock, or do a stock rebuild, and fix the tuning issues.
