This past week JRCivic built and installed my B20-VTEC motor The engine build went prety smooth except for a small blunder on JRCivic's part hehehe....... But I knew he would get it corrected asap. JRCivic put the motor together like it was nothing! I mean it's almost like he has memorized exactly how to build these things hehe. We finished up the install Friday afternoon with a few odds and ends to complete before we cranked her up. Saturday morning we fired her up and she ran pretty good for a freshly built motor! We took her for a test drive and got a generic fuel supply code (code 43). Jim thinks the code is caused from the B20 block not having a pvc system on it...... I beleive we have a short term fix for it right now. The only thing that really messed us up is that my 290cc Venom injectors didn't arrive in time ......(my fault). The motor has 331 miles on it right now.
I'll be going back up for some "Final" tuning in about 2 weeks or so to have the injectors installed and have my full-sweep gauge installed as well.
Pics are coming soon...........
-
id be willing to bet Jim could find SOMEWAY to put a B-series Honda head on a Ford V8. And no, im not joking!
-
The pics have been uploaded to my server..... The question is do you guys want a link to the pics OR have me post the pics here???? There are about 65 pictures so it would take up a buttload of bandwidth........ Let me know.

Is that a "File-Fit ring" joke ?!?
ouch.
-
I would like to see this I met a guy around here that has a b20/vtec JRSC SI.... his car is pretty damn fast!
-
I should be cranking my jrsc`d 2.0 over in about a week
-
Tell me the details I'm trying to build something very similar the Pics would be very helpful. I new Jim was the man Now this proves it.
Derik
-
Jim, you know I'm just kidding
Derik: Jim is VERY good at what he does, this is why I trust NO ONE else but him to work on my car
The pics include shots of Jim's "Domestic" 470+ hp camaro, the Aurora motor (red H22), Blackbird motor and Nighthawk motor (Yellow valve cover), an LS-VTEC motor Jim built (red integra), Jim's H22 swap in a white civic coupe!, my quaife lsd, z10 block girdle and the buildup of my B20-VTEC....

WOW, that was a LOT of pics Tim.
I must have gotten really dirty during your project... I changed shirts THREE times throughout your photos !!!
hahaha
-
Jim we ALL got filthy working on this thing hehe.
BTW, I played with the throttle just a tad bit last night and the car starts to pull pretty hard before the boost gauge gets 10 degrees of vacuum!!! This motor is going to be fun!
-
Damn! This 1,000 mile break-in sure is taking forever
469 miles on it so far, 531 miles to go
-
Be patient my son... it will be worth the wait.
-
By the way Tim...
Your new injectors arrived today.

May I ask what kind of build-up the Nighthawk was intended for(ie specs, street/strip, drag/roadRace)? Are my eyes blurry or is that an Unorthodox crank pully on that motor??? http://www.members.cox.net/importjunkie/DSCF0013.JPG
-
The Nighthawk motor will be thrown in a CRX that weighs about 1600 lbs!!! Jim picked up the front half of the CRX like it weighed nothing
Drag strip only.
That's all I know about that "little" motor hehe...
-
I assume the engine is balanced because of the crank pulley. I my self am kinda scared of them from all of the horror stories I've heard of using light weight crank pulleys. I dont' doubt Jims skills, anyways it looks great!
-
WOW, today I decided to put my resonator in my Tanabe exhaust so I could listen for any "engine" sounds that I was possible missing before. This engine purs like a kitten at 5,000 rpms!!
-
Of course it purrs like a kitten !!! You didn't bring your car to me for my charming personality and dashing good looks did you ?!?
heheh
About the Nighthawk...
This project was built for two reasons: First, to build a car with a total budget of only $6000.00 (not including my donated time) and to KICK ASS at the local street-race scene. The truth is I will never pilot the car myself down at the street fights because I do not want to condone this behavior... however, I do want people in my local area to do more business with me, so my work must be exploited and I cannot think of a better place to hit my target audience.
The chassis is a 3G CRX DX that has been totally stripped inside and out. No A/C. I have created a new chassis harness from a '89 CRX Si... and removed EVERY wire that was un-necessary (A/C fan, heater circuit, door chimes, seat belt plug, dome light, cargo light, rear defroster, stereo and fuel pump) I have installed a Kirk Racing 6-point roll cage and a twelve gallon aluminum fuel cell in the cargo area. The dash shell will remain inside the car, however, a 5" tach, volt meter, coolant temp, and oil pressure gauges will reside where the original cluster previously lived. The only interior panels that will remain is the door panels because it just looks like shit without them. Suspension mods include a complete Energy Suspension poly kit, Tokico HP struts, Suspension Techniques rear drop springs, an '88 Integra rear axle with disc brakes and larger sway bar, Power Stop cross-drilled rotors at all four corners with Axis pads, and a set of 15" Kosei K1's with P205/45VR15 Nitto 555R Drag Radials.
Now, for the Powerplant...
'96 B18C1 block bored to 84mm
Benson Ductile Iron sleeves
JE 12.5:1 custom pistons
Crower 4340 Chromemoly steel rods
Knife edged crank
ACL bearings
Complete balance/blueprint job
Unorthodox race crank pulley
Type "R" oil pump with ProDrive internals
Type "R" water pump
'99 B16A2 head
BCE street/strip port and polish treatment
Ferrea .5mm oversized severe duty valves
Crower double valve spring set
Crower Titanium retainers
OE Type "R" lost-motion assemblies
Crower "Beast" camshafts
Fidanza adjustable cam gears
Skunk2 Intake manifold
Transmission is a stock JDM YS1 with LSD transferring power through an ACT Extreme Pressure Plate and 6-puck disk and Fidanza aluminum flywheel.
Engine management will be handled by a Hondata 2d.
I expect the wheel HP figures to be around 210... which should put this car in the low 12's... maybe even the high 11's.
It will be street legal, have all necessary running lights (including turn signals) and a horn. It has a valid tag and title/registration.
Any more questions ???

Sorry for Off Topic: Thanks a bunch for the info JRCivic. Now I realize the purpose of the Nighthawk, and it looks like a pretty extreme project. It would take me a couple of YEARS practice and a whole lot more skillz before I would ever come close to building up a car like that. From the rod bearings to the shell and suspension, I bet you did 101% of the labor involved to getting that car finished? Nice Job! How did you manage to put a fully built and sleeved motor with all the other parts together with only $6000 budget? Did the $6000 include the cost of the car and besides the rear axels, was every other part new from the manufactures? Thanks

Update on the motor: Today I took her to 6,000 rpms for the first time! The powerband seems enormous and I haven't even hit boost yet!
hehe..........

Yeah, lets not steal Tim's thunder here Jim. When I saw the detailed breakdown of parts in the above post, I was hoping that was Tim's beast. So gentleman, do us the favor of giving a COMPLETE list of what has been done to Tim's motor.
I would also like to know what RPM range will be this motor's comfort zone. As well as what max RPM can it be spun to safely.
Tim, as you know I am really exited for you. Jim does a great job of putting forth every effort in making a dream project come true. I hope yours is every bit as successful as mine was.

90Teg...
I am happy to tell you all you wish to know about the Nighthawk project, however, I do not wish to steal Tim's "thunder" here in this thread. His car is a piece of magic all on it's own... and it truly deserves to be fully discussed here.
The happiness of my customers is FAR more important than my own projects... because the truth is, without them, my projects never come to fruition.
Call me at the shop to talk "Nighthawk"... or start a new thread with your questions: I will answer all.
KEEP KICKING ASS TIM !!!
By the way, how does the torque feel at 6000 rpm ???
-
The torque feels pretty damn strong right now!!
-
Tim,
Can I tell ??? Please, Please, let me tell them !!! I really wanna talk CRVTEC !!!
-
By all means Jim........
-

"I would also like to know what RPM range will be this motor's comfort zone. As well as what max RPM can it be spun to safely"
Jim or Tim, any guestimates on this?
-
sounds like its gonna be a killer setup, Im getting tempted
how much Hp do you think it will put?
-
My goal is at least 250+whp and 170+ ft/trq at the wheels
-
Dam! BoostedEx, your setup is almost exactly the same I had planned before I got my new ride. The only thing I would change is the LSD(cuz the stock Honda is not going to last with all the crazy torque), and port the head so you can take advantage of the larger displacemet+boost along with piston speed from the CRV's longer stroke. Otherwise that is still a "KICK ASS" setup. I wish Jim was a little closer to California so I can give him some more customers like me and my buddies. Did you guys come up with any code name for this motor?
-
How bad is it to take a 2.0 to higher RPM's? What are the pro's running? Surely their running turbo's and reving to atleast 9,000rpms with 2.0's, right? If anyone with experience know's then please reply. I am curious as to know how "big" I can build mine.
-
90teg,
I DO have the BEST lsd available on the market today........a QUAIFE
http://www.members.cox.net/importjunkie/DSCF0041.JPG
-
SuperTeg,
The only downside to spinning a CRVTEC to high rpms is the rod/stroke ratio You could get some "custom" pistons made to increase the rod/stroke ratio, BUT you will spend A LOT of money doing so. I decided to strengthen up the bottom end by installing a Z10 block girdle to prevent crankwalk at high rpms;

Jim,
The ONLY things I would change, just because I'm "Anal" hehehe......
Venom 290cc injectors (or at least I think hehe)
Cartech 2025 ...I don't have Jim's special one
But yes, that about covers it

Al,
My intensions are to spin her up to 8,000 rpms ONLY at the drag strip, and no more than 7,000 rpms on the street...
So far I've taken her up to 6,000 rpms and she purrs like a kitten!!
I just put another 100 miles on her tonight so only 197 miles to go.....hehe

Tim,
Actually, I can update your particular 2025 to the "i" version when you come back up. All I will have to do is change out the bleeder screw for you because I already installed the big check valve.
Call me tomorrow... I need to bounce something off of you.
-
Well guys the motor is broke-in now YAY! Now all I have to do is wait on Jimbo to get those cars finished up so I can take him to Atlanta with me!!! hehehehe.........

DAMN! This thing Dynoed 310 hp at the wheels with 235 ft/lbs of torque!!!!
Just Kidding.......... still waiting on Jimbo to give me the green light. It won't be long now!
