Jon Bon Jovi - He's always had the crowds eating out the palm of his hand. He's still got his looks, and always seemed like a good guy, not an asshole.
Bon Jovi might be a bit wimpy, but they are up there with the giants of rock, like the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.

Ginger: he is all over the place. When he rocks, he rocks, his solo stuff seems to be all over the place. Even thou Wildhearts and SG5 aren't really solo but it is him in control, are much better than any of his solo stuff. his death wouldn't shock the world
There really is nobody out there that i can thin kof that would shock the world in the rock world outside of Marylin Manson. Maybe Axl just on grounds we are still waiting for the new CD. And maybe if Keith Richards kicked the bucket.
The reason IMO rock stars aren't revealed in a god like status or bigger than life is fairly simple.
With MTV, VH1 and many other shows constantly covering every aspect of a musicians life, it leaves no mystery to that person whatsoever. Everything is so over saturated with the music industry. You also have the internet and have up to the second info on pretty much any band out there.
When I was a kid, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Van Halen etc. had these larger than life personas because back then, seeing hard rock bands on TV was rare occurence. We were only fed tidbits of band news via Circus, Cream, Hit Parader, Kerrang etc. Seein g a band on some TV show back then was a big deal and you planned your week around making sure you were home that night.
I also think when you're younger, that has a lot to do with how you visualize the world. Most of the bigger bands today, don't seem to have that over the top attitude as well. Except for maybe Rap artists and a few exceptions in the rock world.
Interesting side note, Axl Rose has been basically a recluse for the past 10 years. People can slam him anyway they want, but the guy has this mysterious persona that people, love him or hate him are facscinated by and always have an opinion about him when he surfaces.
That's my 2 cents worth.

As mentioned, I to have to say Bon Jovi. They are still kicking it bigtime. Sure people may laugh at Bon Jovi, but I'll tell ya what...They have to be the best songwriters out there...that actually write songs that one can relate to. Love a song that has lyrics with meaning. Not too keen on the Party, Girls, Drinking, Saturday Night, Hear the alarm ring and is FRIDAY...bullcrap these days.
Another band is Aerosmith.
Still cool and they bring in the crowd bigtime and put on a great show.
I know they are not out there as much these days...but to me CHEAP TRICK is all about Rockstars. These guys have to be the coolest guys I have ever met. They are just normal after a show and dont' have that EGO, I AM A ROCKSTAR attitude.

There will be a ROCKSTAR again, it's just that there has been nobody to take the roll since DLR. Actually, had Andrew Wood not died, he would have been it.
I guess it's my thinking of what a rockstar is.
Some may call someone who screws every chick and has every disease in the book, alcholics, drugged, and shitty attitudes as rockstars, but I consider those IDIOTS.
As I said before, never understood...the whole SEX, DRUGS, & ROCK-N-ROLL crap...I think it's cheesy and just that label makes some musicians think that that is the way they have to be.
Like Axl...he's not a rockstar to me...he's an idiot. I consider down to earth musicians as rockstars, even if they are not playing arenas or you see them walking down the street or at the corner store like your average everyday civilian...those musicians are tops with me and the true rockstars.
Great ideas here...I was thinking so much of the same things...its like rockers today have fogotten that they are living the dream...not that what they do will get them the mansions and tons of cars like on MTV CRIBS ...I am not of the opinion either that Drugs and ODing need to be part of the equation...
I too agree with Marcus that Mr Jon Bon Jovi would qualify...and for this reason...I just saw that bugger play the other nite and damn if the show was not just as good if not better than 20 years ago for me....and his music speaks for itself...I have more songs by him that never made it to a CD than most bands ever hope to write in their careers and they are all worthy songs not just fluff...although he does rely on the past for so much of his sex appeal...haven't seem him sing to a gal in the crowd in some years...
Axl...yea he has a reclusive personality but has not backed it up musically...he would have been inclluded on my LIST...would have...
MTV has ruined that image for so many stars...Tommy Lee...goes to college...how lame...Gene Simmons...what a bafoon he was on that kiddie show...and OZZY...poor Ozman...
But isn't it sad that you have to go back even a decade to find something you would consider over the top...
I think of Vince, Nikki,Bret, DLR, Axl, Jon Bon Jovi, Tyla, Michael Monroe,Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, and ELVIS...
Today one sticks in my head but only from the music I have...I have yet to see them live but Robin Black...has that attitude...I wish to see them live first...

Last time I saw him the gig was held up for half an hour just because he'd forgotten his dodgy contact lens and had to send a courier to his hotel to retrieve it. The media promotes what it wants and ignores what doesn't fit into its little box of bohemianism. What it wants is faux-earnestness combined with neo-preppy arrogant entitlement such as in "punk." Since that doesn't allow room for the larger than life aspects of things, then they are pushed aside, the way real glam was pushed aside in the early 1990s to promote grunge.
Anyway, look elsewhere for things such as that.

Holy Crap Carl!....I would shit if I ran into Robin Zander in a mall. Cheap Trick as you know is one of my all time favs and I've never met Zander or any other members of the band. That "Would" be a big deal to me. See there is the old familiarity thing which makes it no big deal. Robin Zander and any other member of Cheap Trick are legends in my book. Zander is very much a rockstar from interviews I've seen him in. He has that very self assured air about him.
I guess though it's the same thing as when back in the late 80's it was no big deal to see Crue, Poison, Roth, The Cult, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Black n' Blue etc, in the many Peeler bars of Vancouver on any given night, when they were recording their albums here. It becomes no big deal and you get used to it.

i got to hang out with Cheap Trick one night almost 10 years ago i would say. They played this club here that my friend used to run. they were all really nice guys but like Carl stated, not very rockstarish, not that that?s a bad thing. about the most rockstarish thing about them was the guitarist Rick Nielsen constantly complaining 'bout, "we're Cheap Trick! we played Budokan for christ sake and now we have to play Tink's?" (i.e. Tink's is/was a glorified bar, held approx 900 people, 2 foot by 2 foot post in the middle of the stage, terrible view points but they got EVERYONE to play there) i said to Mr. Nielsen, "hey, life is tough isn't it? last night i was at a dorm party at Marywood U (local girls college) and tonight i'm drinking with you. who got the worst deal?"
actually i didn't say anything. it was Cheap Trick damnit, i wasn't going to talk back.
side note, they were not that good live but i don't think they were too into it. still love em though, great band. they are playing around here again in march.
as for who is a rockstar, it begins and ends with Diamond Dave, still. just ask him, he'll tell ya'!
Sandy, CT are from Rockford and they never moved away. The whole city pretty much treats them as if they were still a small band, and that is mainly due to the fact that they still play out all the time. It used to be (even during their biggest days) that if you were from the Chicago/Rockford area, and you ever PAID to see CT, you were an idiot. You could get free vouchers to their shows everywhere. They never charged when in the area, if you knew how to get the freebies, which consisted of walking into a County Seat clothing store (usually) and saying "can I get Cheap Trick tickets" and the person behind the counter would roll their eyes and say "yeah, take one, they're on the counter there".
To this day, they play little bars all around Rockford. I still haven't gone to track them down yet, as it is never really announced. They just play. I should though. I grew up in the area, and have only seen them once. Granted, it was my first concert and it was for the "Next Position" album. It was just always one of those things where they played soooo often, you eventually just lost the idea of going to see them.
It's really sad there are no new ones though. All we have are the ones from days gone past.
Maybe the fact that Cheap Trick haven't followed the cliched 'rock star' lifestyle accounts for the fact that they're all still alive - and still playing! Robin Zander still has the most incredible voice too. Amazed that you've only seen them once, Carl!
It's a fact I am NOT proud of, and one that I don't mention to people. Usually when asked if I have seen them, I make it sound better than it is by saying "duh...they were my first concert when I was 12!"

You'd think we'd have these issues worked out by now, but for some reason we don't. People do want Rawk Stars, but they want to get good music from them; I'm sort of surprised that people put up for so long with so much substandard music in the '80s (or maybe I've been reading all the hip mags for too long), but I know why they did. Too bad--a real lost opportunity there, and a good lesson in why you need to be making good music for the long term, not just cashing in. If you're gonna be a "tribal spokesman", so to speak, you'd better make your tribe look good, and too many people who've aspired to Rawk Star status didn't understand that.
(The folky U.K. '70s rock band the Strawbs had a manager who actually encouraged the band to keep interaction with their fans to a minimum so as to Preserve The Mystique. I wonder how many bands got advice like that?)
For the larger-than-life stage persona, Robin Black.
For cooler-than-coolness, Butch Walker.
Both long-overdue stars. It's good to keep them 'underground' in our little scene though.
