What’s w/t $12.00 parking and the middle aged ladies that wouldn’t shut up!!
OK- had to clear the air over that. Great night-great weather.
Part 1-
Chick opened w/Gary Burton playing a tune off of Native Sense. Then they went into Crystal Silence and Senior Mouse. They came out with all guns drawn- these are difficult tunes, and Burton was smokin’- I sat next to a kid who took private lessons w/Burton and he was blown away.
Part 2-
Acoustic Band w/ Brecker, Gadd, Gomez
They started w/Quartet #1 then #2 pt1. Steve played some fine brush work and really laid it down. It was classic Gadd-yes, he did his signature fills, especially the one you’re all thinking about...and the audience dug it. He really played well and appeared pissed at the sound guy over the first half of the set. He kept looking back, telling the guy “a little up, then down.” This went on for sometime until the last tune, Sicily. I felt for a split second this was Aja towards the end. Steve really orchestrated his parts- again, classic Gadd. He plays his thing and it works.
Part 3-
Electric band w/Patitucci, Weckl, Gambale, Marienthal
I didn’t really catch the names of these tunes until Rumble and Transdance. Dave and John were incredible. Frank sounded great, as did Eric. Chick let them all fly. Dave had his new set-up and played percussion during one specific number- it sounded like three players. My buddy thought Gadd was awesome- better than ever. I loved Steve...(here we go) but Dave...man, he was unreal tonight. So smooth, so solid, so perfect (my buddy says he is too perfect)- he was all over that kit and the music was intense towards the end. I can’t imagine a group playing this complex music tighter. Right after the set, Chick took the mic and said he was having so much fun. I watched him closely during the numbers and he looked like he was having a blast. Both Chick and Frank really gained a few over the years- I thought at first Chick was in a moo-moo- his hair a little longer- appeared to be in a sort of phase of sorts to me. Whatever he was into, he played with such fluid taste and chops galore.
Outside of the wine guzzling women who wouldn’t shut their yappers, it was a great evening at the Bowl.
If you catch this gig on the East coast, security was loose at the Bowl and a mini-disk player an easy option to record with. The sound at the Bowl was so good, you picked up every cymbal hit with Gadd using brushes. This would have made an excellent recording. I would wonder however where you would have placed the mic. Would it have picked up those chicks talking all the time? The mic of choice seems to be the Sony ECM-MS907- about the size of a good cigar.

Wow, you're fast.
The last tune the Elektric band played was GOT A MATCH. Indeed it was INSANE.
It was a pleasure watching Gadd be Gadd, but I can't help but think about his minimal progression over the last decade in contrast to Weckl who becomes a different, better player every couple of years. Watching the new Dave with the Elektric band was interesting. He did sound almost perfect, so fluent and tasty. His work with the go-go and cow bells with the bongos really added a lot of flavor to the music. Over all he played amazing. <strike> He got me tickets. </strike>
I enjoyed watching Brecker play too, that guy is a jazz God. I'm a big fan of his.
Overall great show, can't wait to see the Elektric band at Catalinas and House Of Blues.

Way to go - the Boyz come thru! [I just KNEW it was gonna be Pocket & Steve - KNEW IT!] I wasn't gonna stay up, but I started watchin videos; &, well, b4 u know it, just LOOK what time it is - time 2 check in 2 c if the boyz've entered anyth'g. I'm gonna da** sure try to mini-d the shows when they get here. Thanx for the tips on the type of recorder & mic [in that other topic post.] U 2 try 2 get some sleep if your adrenaline level will let ya! I bet u both have that 'glass-eyed' thing goin on ... u both look kinda dazed & bewildered, like u been "shot at & missed, sh** at & hit" [lol] ... what's w/ the 'bed-head' b4 bedtime?! Ciao 4 now ....

Yeah, sick show. I've never seen Gadd live before and I was blown away. Really dug his stuff. Super tasty, cool phrasing, and the crowd really loved him. He did a bitchin' solo while Chick comped a latin groove and brought down the house. Weckl also rocked. They opened with, yes, RUMBLE. Oh, no!!! Don't do it!! It was awesome. And, yes, they did Light Years.
I have to say the night belonged to the Elektric Band. They all really looked like they were having a blast. And, good Lord, Chick IS fat. He has become a rotund man. He really did look like he was wearing a moo-moo. (I guess there's not a chapter on dieting in Dianetics.) He may have an ass the size of Van Nuys, but he still rocks the hizzle-fashizzle.
It was kind of funny: I got Weckl, Gadd, and Airto (sp?) all together backstage for a picture. The lighting was perfect, they were all smiling, everything looked great. It was drumming history. I pressed the shutter and nothing happened--no "click." I realized then that I was out of film. I felt very, very stupid and mumbled something about "don't worry, guys..." Luckily, I took some other shots that will hopefully come out.

I was a little fearful some might be offended at my Chick observation, but nobody said anything next to me and it was on my mind until I made the post...then your blast- I loved Chick man, but he was huge...an ass the size of Van Nuys...that's killer man...I'm sorry but I'm rollin' here...OK, sorry 'bout the film thing...what a seriously cool thing to hang backstage after that gig. The Electric band smoked so hard and bad-Dave was so insane tonight, it hits you harder after a couple hours.

Steve, I agree w/ ya about Brecker - he IS jazz [what it has evolved to]- 1 of the all-time greats, & 1 of [if not my personal FAV] sax player. Check him out on the Mod Drumr Fest 2000 DVD [the 1 w/ VC & Karizma] w/ H Hernandez, the 'Tooch, & Hilario Duran on keys!!! There's so many great musical things he's done, but, for the lack of time/space, I'll pick one: his sax solo on the Steps Ahead tune "Trains," off their CD 'Magnetic' [rel'd. '86] - that solo made me cry, laugh, & just plain rock the way he builds it fr. start 2 finish. If any of u guys have never heard this tune, go out & get the disc if u can. Hiram Bullock is providing the guitat solo [w/ Chuck Loeb provid'g killer acoustic], M Mainieri [vibes] & Kenny Kirkland [great keyb player, most famous 4 playin w/ Sting's 1st solo band aft the Police, who sadly passed away a few yrs. back] are also on there, & Erskine is gruvin [w/ Vic Bailey on bass!] like a freight-train on this one as well [hence the title?]. [He also swings like a beast on the tune 'Cajun.' Later, Steps Ahd. Live Tokyo '86 came out [w/ Stv Smith, Daryl Jones [also fr. Sting's 1st solo], & Mike Stern replacing Ersk, Vic, & Bullock/Loeb] & it's a fantastic CD AW ['as well']....

As 4 T-Bo's comments about the Chickmeister - so he's eatin right[eously], huh? Hmmm - he's makin a good livin [he IS , aft all, 1 of the handful best]! Well, I guess it'ws appropo that he opened w/ his tune 'Rumble' [aft he's thru, hope nobody's 'Got a Match'] ... &, [like T pointed out], I guess that's why they call it 'Dianetics,' not 'Dietnetics' ...

I'm still baffled at how Pocket got home and wrote a review before I did. I live walking distance from the bowl...one friggin street over!
Oh well. Let's thank T-bo for running out of film during drum history! Seriously though, expect his pics in MD if all goes well.

In all seriousness- In what ways do you think Dave is impoving? Do you think his ability to play music is deeper because his musical choices are more mature?- and/or is it the sheer time spent sitting on a set of drums that makes him sound more at ease with the music?

Hey Steve- the guy I went to the show with was sick and right after the electric band finished, we jammed. No traffic- boom right out of the Bowl into the Valley.
Regarding electronics, my buddy was a serious fusion drummer in the 70's & 80's and commented that Dave had played triggers. Yet, like Steve, I am not sure. His rig looked so much like his gear posted on his site and in the sound video. I do know for a fact that during one tune, I believe either Rumble or Transdance he was all over the groove playing time, percussion, and the lot. It reminded me of the liner notes on Trigger Happy from his solo CD Heads Up.
After sleeping on it- the memory burn I have of Dave is total confidence. I had binoculars on him the entire show and he was like water flowing down a river. You know he was all over that sound. Unlike Gadd who seemed to have some difficulty w/the mix, Dave's personality(attention to detail and control) would not allow anything to happen if he could avoid it, less a power outage- and he probably has a way to deal with that!
I don't play this type of insane fusion-esq music-Steve would have better analysis than myself, but this stuff, especially the last electric tune was ridiculous- like a frieght train moving at high speed. The Patitucci-Weckl combo was magical- I saw them in college back in '86 and they smoked! Seeing John next to Dave's kit (I absolutely dig watching this bass player groove), locking into each other, communicating non-verbally, looking over at Chick (drums & piano faced ea other)- I enjoyed this aspect over the music and Dave's playing. I loved seeing this dynamic.

pocketplayer, you missed a great encore with dave and steve together. it almost felt like the buddy rich concert all over again. ahhh, only if vinnie was there as well. oh, how bout virgil, vinnie, dave, and steve playing together. haha, maybe one day.
