I?m just killing time today, and thought you might be also. It's too hot to do anything productive, like sitting on the dock with Katy-the-Corgi. Kit?s been watching a tape of the ?Wizard of Oz?, lately, and it occurred to me what a truely great movie that is. It had wonderful special effects for the time, and enduring music. I still like to hear ?Over The Rainbow? (Jewel belts out a great version)
In the 50?s we watched it annually, as surely as Christmas or Thanksgiving. And we learned important things from it; there?s no place like home, we all have intellegence, compassion and courage, if we just look for them. And of course, the fact that only evil witches are ugly, and they melt when you throw water on them.
Here?s some trivia questions for you:
1. Who was the first ?hillbilly? chosen for the role of the tin man, but had a near-fatal reaction to the makeup?
2 We all knew the Kansas peddler and the Wizard were the same actor, but what other TWO roles did he play?
3. Who was first (very famous) actress courted for the role of Dorothy, and passed over, probably because of her image?
4. Who were the Munchkins known as, really (professionally, that is)?
5. Who was the actor that the young Judy Garland was romantically paired with? He played a major role in promoting the film, even though he wan?t in it.
6. What is the title of the remake (kinda), in the 70?s, with an all-black cast? (we like this one too!)
-
1. Buddy Ebsen
2. The doorkeeper of OZ and ... and ...
3. Shirley Temple
4. Little People
5. Mickey Rooney
6. The Wiz

No fair, muley! I hate when people know everything I do, and spell it correctly to boot!
#4 has a better answer - their professional troup name.
Only part credit for #2, and I forgot all about the doorman of OZ. He actually playd FIVE roles - two more to go!
-
Oh, and didn't you love "The Wiz"? Dianna Ross made a "supreme" Dorothy, with then-little Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. Say what you will, that kid has talent. And one of my all time favorites, Nipsy Russel as the Tinman. And, and,..I forget who played the Lion, but he was great as well. The Wiz himself, was the all-powerful Richard Prior.
It all was set in a fantastical urban landscape, with an evil sweat-shop owner named Evileen. Her favorite saying (and song) was "Don't nobody bring me no bad news!" Gotta love her!
-
He was also the driver of the coach with the horse of a different color the door keeper of the gate to the city and also the guard at the door to the wizard's hall.

JBT, in acknowledgement of your superior intellect, we award you with this degree of ThD
(Doctor of Thinkology)!

Okay, I cheated on #4. According to one who was there, they were billed as the Singer Midgets. http://www.kansasoz.com/infomunchkins.htm
Lon, a couple of your recent topics remind me of how much I've missed your voice gracing these various fora(heehee, I learned the correct plural from Ken Decker). Good to see you posting.

Correct-o-mundo, PorP! Sorry but I already gave JBT the diploma, will you settle for this nifty emerald slippers?
I gotta come up with tougher quizes!
And thanks for the nice comment. I've always lurked around Unk's, but just started slumming here seriously since the FRL site is down again.

Last summer, the Muny Opera in St. Louis did "The Wizard of Oz", with Ozzie Smith (the greatest defensive shortstop of ALL time) cast as the wizard. He brought the house down with this line: "I am the great Wizard of Oz...but my friends call me Ozzie."
-
Lon,
Are you trying to tell me that I don't have a brain?
Don't worry about pulling any punches because several posters have already reminded me of the fact.
Thanks for bringing a great memory to mind. The movie is a classic, even more so since we grew up with it.
-
Dorothy's middle name was Gale...or was that her last name? Ack...I haven't seen it in soooo long...
Ya know, it's kinda nice to talk about the WOO without a bunch of people jumping in and claiming that it promotes satanism, communism, homosexuality or all three, lol.
-
Duh, "this (pair) of emerald slippers?"
Make that, RUBY slippers! Am I paying attention, or what?
And BTW, without looking, what is Dorothy's middle name?
What does the Kansas peddler bill himself as?
And a tough one, what kind of bug sequence did they originally have, but cut in the final movie? Hint: In a classic blunder, they left in the line where the Wicked Witch says, "I've sent a little insect on ahead to take the fight out of 'em ".
-

I answered more questions than anybody! I didn't even get a pair of ruby panties! Nor an emerald thong! And I spelled everything properly too!
The AVATAR is NOT AMUSED!
-
Just loosen your garters a little. I'm saving the best for last, and you ain't answered the "bug" question yet.
Besides, I been busy with the plans to have my body changed out. I was thinking I wanted Pammy's, but then I thought, naw, too many miles!
-
Well, Lon, honey... a Mercedes can handle it!
-
Lon,
For some reason it sticks in my mind that the insects were bees. I don't know why but somehow I have a vague association of bees with the trek down the yellow brick road.
There, there Mule. We know that you are a super genius and the the evil Lon likes to play favorites.
-
Hmmm, let's see, bees, bees, bees.
AAANNNNNNNNNTTTT!
So solly, incorrect answer, and also, you have been voted the weakest link on this, the new Japanese version of this popular quiz show. Now, to the delight of our studio audience, and of course, our home viewers, you will prease to commit seppuku, or as it is called by our vulgar American viewers, "harry carry".
For the rest of you intrepid gamesters, time is running out for the remaining questions. And I still have to give away this nifty, kinda burned broomstick, these red and white striped pantyhose with the imprint of a house on them, and this genuine, authentic, stuffed flying monkey.
-
Lon, just for recap purposes, could you clarify EXACTLY which specific questions go unanswered? I wouldn't wanna giva ya the wrong answers ya know!

-
OK, OK. I see by reading the other threads, that the intelligent elite among us are over to Capnfun's place, gargling raw oysters with hot sauce and drinking themselves into oblivious nirvana. Therefore, I will repeat the questions in question.
?What was the billing of the Kansas showman, before he became Wizard of course?
?What ?bug? scene was cut from the movie, leaving the blooper line where the Witch says, ?I sent a little insect on ahead to take the fight out of them?. Hint: she says it just before dispatching the flying monkeys, and the removed scene was a dance routine featuring the Scarecrow.
And a caveat for those among us with unwashed minds (you know who you are), a flying monkey has absolutely nothing to do with Pammy on a swing set.
-
On a swing? How kinky! Worth a try though.
-
Time's up, class, everyone please place their papers face down and eat your cheat notes.
Kit and I leave for 2 weeks on the road today, so I'll cave and give you the answers, which I know everyone is just slavering for anyway.
Proffesor Marvel was the name of the Kansas peddler.
The scene which was cut, was a dance scene, an evil JITTERBUG scene.
Thanks for playing along, and I hope JBT didn't really, well, you know. Anyway, before you leave, pick up your consolation prizes - a nice, fresh poisoned apple. Next time- Classic Fairy Tales!
-
What?
I didn't really think that I had earned a Doctorate of Thinkology?
Lon, I earned that degree in the fall of 1976. I forget if it was Microdot or the exceptionally fine batch of Blotter that was around that year. It doesn't really matter which. The point is I "lived" the Wizard of Oz.
All I can tell you is that the bitch of a witch was really ugly and the flying monkeys were exceptionally annoying.
Again, thanks for the memories!
