I gutted my cat this weekend and what a pain in the butt that was. Well, after fininshing the job I took care of the second o2 sensor with the 10OHM resistor and alluminum foil. The car ran great, it lowered my boost over 1PSI and bottom end showed great gains in HP. I do plan on getting a test pipe but I was bored and wanted to try gutting the cat just for the time being. I realize there's a lot of turbulance associated with the gutted cats but I'll buy a test pipe as soon as I find one.
Here's where the problem begins:
24 hours after the mod my CEL pops on. I laughed at first and was dissapointed but not really concerned. For some reason my car has a habit of throwing a CEL 24 hours after any mod, I reset the ECU and the code never shows up again. On my way to work this morning I wanted to check my air/fuel ratio and proceeded to WOT. Once at WOT I looked at the gauge and it read SUPER LEAN. WTF, I'm wondering why the hell this is happening. Would it be the turbulance inside the cat causing the o2 to read lean? Would the CEL cause the o2 to read lean? I'm really nervous now. I only made two WOT runs after gutting the cats before I noticed I was running lean. I know for a fact that the car was running 2 bars rich right I gutted the cat. Can someone offer so advice?
I think I'm more scared at this point then pissed.
P.S. the air/fuel gauge shows perfect operation during normal driving.

I seriously doubt that's the problem. When I say lean, I mean LEAN. It's like when you take your foot off the gas and coast in gear, it's off the scale on the lean side.

Maybe with the manifold pushing less boost, the JR FMU is not raising the fuel pressure enough to sustain the right A/F mixture. I think you're missing out about 5psi of fuel with every 1psi drop of boost.
What was you A/F reading before the gutting?
I would seriously consider upgrading to 310's especially with that 8psi pulley.

I'll mess around with the fuel pressure and see what I get. Maybe my "trusty"...cough, cough... JR FPR kicked the can. I would change out my pulley but it's not the 8PSI pulley, it's the 6 pound pulley that came with the kit. After gutting the cat my PSI dropped from 8 to about 6 1/2 PSI at WOT. That part did make me happy!! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I've also, gutted my cat on my 98 GSR after installing the JRSC, but my a/f ratio never changed at WOT nor did my max boost pressure. The only things that I noticed was my CEL light came on, the exhaust noted changed and got louder, and my butt dyno felt a few horses.

Hey Kurt, sorry to hear about your problem...wish I could help. A little off topic but sorry I missed you on Airport Sat. night. I heard you got took a ride in my car. Kinda weird how you took a ride in my car and I wasn't even there. Anyways, good luck on your problem.

Man, talk about timing. I just sent you an e-mail 2 seconds ago and then I see your post. Oh well, two thumbs up on your car, that LSD makes all the difference in the world. I just kept thinking the dash board was going to jump in my lap. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

4drsleeper....i am having problems w/my o2 sensor also. it keeps setting the CEL. i saw you added a 100hm resistor. what does that do? what wire do you put it in? i already wrapped my o2 sensor in foil but that hasen't been working so great. hope you can help me out!

O.K. Guys. Here's the story. Forgive me if I have typo's, I'm banging my head against the desk repeatidly *bang bang*. I got home tonight and popped the hood to check out the fuel pressure. As I grad the vaccuum line from the JR FPR I notice it's not connected to the intake manifold. I guess it popped off or I pulled it off my accident. Excuse me one more time while I draw blood from my forehead on the desk!!!! Well, that's one hell of a lesson I've learned. The only question I have now is "How the hell did I not blow my engine?" I guess I'm one freakin lucky person right now. I haven't driven the car since I re-attached the hose but there's no doubt that was the problem. *bang, bang* getting dizzy now. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif I just cant believe my car is still running, sorry for the rambling but damn I'm pissed. They say everything happens for a reason, well I can't think of why this would ever happen but maybe this post will help someone in the future.
SiMike: Go buy a 10 OHM resistor and put it in-line on the green wire your second o2 sensor, wrap it in foil, cover it in plastic and use some electrical tape to make it air tight. It's worked for me so far. I cleared the CEL light before leaving work and it was still off when I got home (20 miles trip and a stop at the gym). Good luck

If the two WOT runs weren't for a very long duration, then you don't have anything to worry about. I'd mainly be worried about melting a piston with such high EGT's, but it seems you're running good.
I'd still do a compression check just to be on the safe side.
Sounds like you got off easy though. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif
-
This is why I have hose clamps on all my vacuum hoses.
You got off easy. I believe it was LostSol who blew an engine because that very same thing happened at the strip.
Good luck, and go get some hose clamps!
Oh BTW, the reason it pops off is that there is 8+psi inside it. Any loose connection can pop off.

Hey man, don't beat yourself...we all do dumb things once in awhile. Like last night, I left a ratchet in the engine compartment and proceeded to drive home. Good thing my car started acting up so that I could pull over and pop the hood. My stupidity almost caused the ratchet to get tangled up with my belts and pulleys. Glad to hear that you didn't blow your engine.

The primary o2 sensor is right in front of the cat, so it shouldnt be affected by the gutted cat (poor fluffy!). Are you watching your fuel pressure? The lean-out could be unrelated to the cat...

Wait a minute, if you're pushing more air, you need some more fuel then right? Maybe you need to richen the top end?

I took my car out for a ride last night after connecting the vaccuum line back. Two words come to mind "Holy Crap", what a difference. I was fighting the steering wheel just to stay on the road in second gear. Anybody thinking about getting a test pipe or gutting their cats should make the effort today and do it. The only problem is that stupid CEL keeps coming on. I thought the 10 OHM resistor trick would have taken care of that but I guess it didn't.

4drsleeper..i ended up putting in a dummy o2 sensor. i used an old one my friend had lying around. i just cut off the wire and screwed it in. the good one that was in the test pipe i just zip tied out of the way. if you unplug it to remove it it will set the CEL. it's been about 30-40 miles w/o a problem. eventually i want to get a high flow cat so i can put it back in and help quiet my exhaust to... hope it works for you ..give it a try...
