i don't understand how people can get so mad
when you tell them i like this band or that band
they ridicule you and put you down then tell you that they hate the band and that they used to like them until they hit it big and now they are sell outs
so the fuck what
who cares what you think
and why are they sell outs
because they want to make more money and have more fans of their music?

I think bands are sellouts when they used to be raw and edgy, but gave it up to make money and sell more records.

If someone doesn't like a band anymore because the music has legitimately changed (like Metallica, say Kill 'Em All compared to the Black album) from when they first became fans that's one thing. even a good production is "sellign out". Like...the new DEICIDE Album is sell-out because it sounds so good.

I kinda agree and kinda disagree. I hate the way the term 'sell out' is thrown around so much but i do believe bands do sometimes sell out. If they started out small and only got to where they were because of the hardcore fans, then turned their back on all that and basically give the fans the finger just to make a quick buck then their a sell out.
This crap of calling bands "sellouts" because they hit it big is so fekkkin' stupid it baffles me to no end. Show me a guy in a band that DOESN'T want to make it big and I'll show you a LIAR. The point of writing good music, and playing it for others is to make MONEY doing what you love. I've never known a guy in a band who wanted to spend his life eating mustard sandwiches. Some of these guys who make it big and then bitch about it make me laugh out loud..To quote John Lydon "If you don't want to be a pop star, just stop being one!" I always liked it when bands I liked made it. It meant they might make more music and stay together.
The only way I see a band being a "sellout", is when they don't stay true to themselves. Change does not = sellout, unless they change to please the suits. But if a band changes their style to stay fresh, great!!! That means they'll most likely last a long time. Ah well, I could write a book here but I'll STFU now. sellout to me is when they start doing things just to make money and it's not about the music anymore, to me bands like kiss(sorry kiss fans), it's just about the money now, yeah at one time it was about the music and being true to ones self, but i don't feel it anymore.
Ive got nothing agaisnt making money, but when it becomes all about the money, like it does in everything, the music suffers because of it, they become to relaxed to comfortable with what their doing.
And this is the reason i love megadeth so much, dave has tasted success, but only tasted it, megadeth has never reached that metallica or kiss level, and that keeps dave motivated to do better,if they ever was to reach that level i think the same would happen to them,but for almost 20 years ive listened to megadeth and have never grown tired or hated anything they done and feel that their only getting better because they don't make alot of money.
Bands do sell out, and all of them would if they had the chance, don't blame the bands or person thier only human, blame money it's what sells out. [img]wink.gif[/img]

probably because out of all the cool stuff out there-music is best,
and people take it very personal.
now that I'm an old fart I can understand why some of the fusion bands I really dug in the mid to late 70s put out a *shudder* disco album or two.....(food, rent, gas etc.)
I can understand it-but I still kind of resent the holes in my record collection........
imo-the biggest example of a band that "sold out" could be Chicago........
What a cool band they could have been, but since I'm not in the band I guess it really doesn't matter (lol)

It typically has nothing to do with a band getting popular, and more to do with them changing their sound completely to get popular. There's a difference.

I won't talk about sell outs here cause I think we pretty much settled the issue but some bands just works on recipe. I really like Bon Jovi but it,s pretty much a recipe. Some songs are even starting to sound like previuously released on (you can almost entirely sing NEVER SAY GOODBYE on ALL ABOUT LOVING YOU on the Bounce album) I like when bands take chances from time to time. When Aerosmtih worked on the NINE LIVES album they supposedly entirely recorded the album with Glen Ballard because they liked his work on Alanis Morrissette's JAGGED LITTLE PILL but at the end they threw everything away and started back with Bruce Fairbairn to go back to the Pump/Permanent Vacation/ sound.
I like bands that take chances from time to time.
people like to claim ownership of thier favorite band. they like to know of them before anyone else. Most bands get bigger over time (except for Spinal Tap)... thus, evey band sells out to a certain extent. Tool's Hooker With a Penis is my favorite song about selling out - "I sold out long before you even heard of me" Heh. damn straight.
