I guess that is the odd thing about other countries. There is no way in hell anybody in the US would back any country other than the US, so a question like this would only be answered with a "US" by people in the States. But other countries are actually open minded enough to find other countries than their own to pull for.
Then there is Canada where only Hockey matters.
Carl, Some people can't root for their own country because they never made it to the finals. That's when they back anyone except the sworn enemy.
My heart says England, but my head says France could pull it out of the bag again.
Although I am a rugby player, I will support french soccer team.
A mixture of England & my sanity!
<font size="4" face="Arial">But ya see, us Americans will pull for the US, but once we get wiped out, we just stop watching the event and act like it doesn't exist. Quote:

At least the Yanks qualified.

and Stanley Cup holy grail time?!?! you are crazy! that ended back when the Flyers got eliminated!
This whole Hockey thing confuses me. I'm not so sure Chicago even has a team.
Chicago did have a team at one time, i think it might even have been one of the original teams. i really couldn't tell you if they still do or not. i know Tampa Bay and Florida have hockey teams. Hockey has no business being in Florida. what next, cats and dogs sleeping together?
italy,of course
...but from what i've seen in the last days our team is a mess so if we're kicked out of the world cup soon i'll be supporting ghana, portugual and holland.
actually i'll be supporting any team who will give a proper kick in the a** to our french cousins

PS in Scotland hockey is for girls in short skirts.
That does'nt sound too bad after all, Carl I see yer point LOL.
Every four years,.. my head turns into a football. I get out the inflatable "easy-wipe" football chair,.. bring the fridge into the living room, and take the batteries out of the door bell. There is enough beer and peanuts in here to feed Africa for 6 months,.. and then,... some greasy South American CHEATS,... gets away with it,.. and knocks England out.
Then I deflate the "Easy-wipe" inflatable chair until next time.
This has been going on in my,... and indeed,...most English houses for decades. I figure I have around 5 more tournaments in my lifetime,.. if I'm lucky, and of the 9 I have seen,.. this time,... WE CANNOT FAIL.....

How hard we will laugh when engerland get knocked out again, having built themselves up so much despite their one man team, Shrek, having a sore toe. Just seeing Jimmy Hill with his head in his hands will be good enough for me, after having had to endure months of 1966 shite in the run up.
Here's a serious question - how long will it take the commentators to mention either the words '1966' or 'england' as soon as the whistle blows in the Germany v Costa Rica match? I'll go for 25 seconds.

Marky, don't be too hard on Grant. Whenever Scotland

Welshland qualify, so it's been England for me

to worry about this time.

All this banter is amusing, but one fact is being overlooked. - Spain will win this time. Ithis our turn for gawd's sake. I will enjoy the whole cup, especially watching T&T hammer England (in my dreams) haha!
<font size="4" face="Arial">i don't really follow hockey except for that the flyers seem to suck every year once they make the playoffs, though doesn't every team in hockey make the playoffs? kidding.Quote:

i'm more of a football fan, american football that is. (can't just say football on this thread) as for the other sports, i'll play basketball till the end of time, i can't get enough of that but i can't watch it on tv at all. (or in person) if im not playing im not there. same with baseball, i just can't seem to get into watching baseball, i play it all the time but watching it is a drag for me.
something about my attention span and goldfish i think
<font size="4" face="Arial">Flyers??? pleazzzze....chokers ala king same as Ottawa and my pathetic Canucks. Given Vancouver's roster, it should have been a given they make the playoffs....but no!!Quote:

Hey you gotta be happy for Brind A'Mour though being an ex-flyer and all. That was quite the amazing comeback Carolina did last night.

I even remember when I was about 15 when Vancouver and Chicago battled each other for the Western Conference Final back in 82. Chicago after that have been rather abysmal. They seem to make terrible trades and have had consistently bad seasons for so many years. I pity the Blackhawks fan.Quote:

You know I can't figure out why Hockey isn't bigger than it is in the States. It's fast, lots of hitting, fights etc. The attendance is as good or better than the NBA, yet they don't have a lucrative TV contract with any major network. They had one with with ABC that just included the last few rounds of the playoffs. That expired around the strike and wasn't renewed.
I've never understood the obsession abroad with Soccer/Football. I need the action fast and furious. Soccer/Football is just to slow paced for my liking.
Canada will win the World Cup....well at least the women...
Canada will win the World Cup indeed. Yeh -
they'll probably face Togo in the final.
You silly sausage.

I actually think it is too fast for the American public, to be honest. I know I would rather watch hockey than even 1 second of basketball. Lord I hate that sport, and it's annoying "stars".
<font size="4" face="Arial">I'll admit we were shit in the 6 Nations this year, and Scotland fully deserved to scrape a victory for a change. Quote:

<font size="4" face="Arial">Wales qualified in 1958, but I think you just missed that one, lol. I'm sure a few beer breakfasts will be acceptable after we conquer all before us. Eeesh, did anybody else see that in last nights TV ratings Womens College Softball drew more viewers than game one of the Stanley Cup finals in the US!?! I think the NHL needs to rethink it's strategy.
<font size="4" face="Arial">Is it inappropriately named then? If its ratings are up and maybe male?Quote:

It's called softball because the ball is much larger than your standard baseball, also called "hardball". I know the 16" variety of the sport is pretty much a Chicago original, but I am not so sure if the rest of the world knows what "Softball" is. It's basically baseball but with a larger ball and pitched underhand. Girls college softball (and now the pro version) throws underhand, but they use a 12" ball and their pitches are damn fast and come from odd angles. Jenny Finch, the premier softball pitcher, faced off against major league baseball players during an All-Star game a few years ago. In other words, she faced the best in the game, and none of them could hit her stuff.

US, of course for me.....and even if we do get knocked out of the "pool of death", I'll still be following the World Cup, since I'm having a fantasy World Cup draft tomorrow night. I would follow it anyway, since I love the game. It will be nice to not have to set the alarm for 3 am on a Wednesday night, just to watch the US this time around. I'm hoping we can somehow knock off Czech Republic. I can't wait til Friday!
And Christian Girls at that!
<font size="4" face="Arial">heh, i actually watched some of that softball game but it was because i was flicking through the stations and the one girl from the team wearing white (i think it was Arizona) was as cute as anything.Quote:

i watched a high school girls softball game once (waiting for our baseball game to start) and let me tell ya, i don't think i'd be able to step in there and hit that. they say that a 60mph softball pitch is the equivalent to a 90mph hardball pitch and the girl in the college game on TV was throwing in the upper 60s.
Carl, they used to show that 16inch game on ESPN a few years back. It was pretty interesting. They say the balls are mush and are quite difficult to hit for distance. If im not mistaken, they didn?t use gloves either did they?
You are correct, no gloves usually. Some people might wear one, but most don't. The ball is pretty mushy also and it is a pain to get any real distance with. But most the guys that play the game are about as mushy as the ball! LOL! It's kind of a game played for the same reason as Rugby. I hear most local Rugby leagues are based more around the bar afterwards, and that is kind of how 16" softball works, or used to. People are taking it much more serious nowdays though.
