I have a few questions regarding LSDs. Does installing a limited slip differential necessarily distribute power evenly to both tires, similar to what positraction does in a muscle car? Or does it only prevent slippage? If it does, do all LSD's do this or only certain brands such as a Quaife?

I dunno how much I can help, since my LSD isn't even in yet, but as far as I understand, the LSD will attempt to supply equal power to both wheels. Its not just to prevent slippage, the LSD will try to distribute 50/50, though not quite with the quaife. The quaife is your best bet for stock/oem like drivability. kaaz should do a similar job, but has clutch plates which bind and are more aggressive, but they can also lock up, which is better in a straight line. the quaife can get very close on its bias as well and is more transparent from what I hear.

oh wait, oh yeah, phantom grip is for locking up in straight line, don't expect it to distribute equal power in the turns. kaaz and quaife will do the full deal.

I have the R LSD, which I LOVE.
As soon as you turn the wheel, you can tell it's there. I thought it would transfer power to the other wheel, only when one starts to spin. Oh no. It moves power back and forth all the time, as soon as you turn the wheel. Turns are smoother, and when you romp on it, it's even better.

I'm a Quaife user and would have a hard time kicking the habit. Nothing like wailing through a nice banked sweeping turn with an LSD in a FWD sc'ed rocket. Damn thing will just PULL you through. Excellence abounds.
(I'm pretty stoked about the Quaife, can you tell?)

Yep... I'm a quaife user myself... with a turbo teg, it's a must... Super smooth power distribution for all situations, unlike the locking mechanisms such as the Phatom grip.... but, in all honesty... u pay for it ..

well, i think limited slip is quite different from positive traction from muscle cars. with LSD, when u r in off gear, and jack up the car, if u spin one will, the other will not move, but with positive traction, if u move one wheel, the other will move (even in off wheel). and it only works when it starts to slip....thats why its called limited slip. but it is somewhat better than positive traction, at least we can drive better in normal condition.
btw i got the stock type r lsd. i rather pay $1500 for a new type R tranny with LSD, than to buy that quiafe thing for $1100? plus installation is about $150 more for quiafe. so to me type r tranny is a better deal. unless if u have a brand new car.
How hard is one to install after the tranny's out??
Is it something a backyard mechanic with common sense can do or does it require special tools like a traditional differential to measure preload, backlash, etc.
Also, where can you get an ITR tranny for $1500?
Actually the Quiafe isnt quite the same as the TypeR LSD.....

Was wondering the same thing - where can one get a Type R tranny for $1500? Lowest quote for the Quaife that I've gotten was $1200 plus shipping. I'd seriously consider a purchase for $1100. And install for $150??

i said $150, but thats $150 more after the tranny is apart. ofcourse the type r LSD is not quite the same as quiafe thing. but at $1500 wouldnt u rather have a NEW type r tranny including LSD. then $1200 just for quiafe?? if ur car is 40k plus, then its a better deal to just changed the whole tranny rather than just getting quiafe.
I dunno if the type-r tranny's can still be had for as low as $1500, but even still, they don't come with the factory LSD. that is a seperate item.
I am talking if you order brand new. If you yank it off a type-r of course it will have the lsd.
