Hey hey! I'm thinking of getting an xbox.. but not too sure, what's everyone's opinion on them? Any computer nerds out there able to tell me if there's a way of play DIVX movies on them without chipping it? Have you hooked it up to your computer yet and mucked about? I dunno... any feedback would be good.. [img]smile.gif[/img]

we got one. only two games, but jetsetradio is dead good. i know you can play DVDs but ive never heared of DIVX. all in all a powerful buy!

i do prefer the ps2 tho...more games, about same price but agen, not sure about divx! they do play dvds (dont waste money on a control! joypad is easy enuf to suss)
or just get an ace pc which is even better [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

There are a hell of a lot of cracking games on Ps2 cos it has been around a lot longer...and they do still have exclusive licences eg the final fantasy series,but having not played any X box games I cant comment on how good they are...ditto with the gamecube...i wish I could afford all 3.....but Id rather stick with the devil I know....plus the games on ps2 have got a lot cheaper recently....

Yes you can play any format on the xbox as there is an xbox media player available and it resides on the machines drive. It also uses the network port properly so you can play each other on your own tv's (no split screen bullshit). Its far more modern than anything out there. Sega produce games for it (need i say more).Besides what people may say the pad is the most comfortable ive used, ergonomicly designed. Your games can be actually stored on the machine too so no need to keep swapping discs. Due to it being a new ish machine thers not as many games as ps2 (over 2yrs age difference) available yet but that will soon change. It has far more compatability features than anything out there and the games are piss to copy

I do reckon that the xbox is better and the controller rules!! we got both the little and big controller and i think bigger is better. but PS2 does have the new ISS which is totally amazing compared to FIFA but i guess bubba you aint bothered about that

Still can't believe no one has mentioned the brilliance that is Halo. It pisses all over the over first person shoot em ups.

I recently experienced the Xbox machine and have to say what a BEAST. It looked like it weighed a tonne, and the controllers - just too big.
As for gameplay, all 3 don't seem to differ that much.

The only console I know that can play DivX is the dreamcast and a divx CD thingy. If you can get a cheap second hand one, it may be worth it just to have that playing your divx movies. PS2 pisses on xbox and gamecube in many ways. Get one of them - they have the most, the best and the cheapest games. Mint

i played on both, but i prefer the ps2 i recon, but the xbox aint bad.

Cube is for 5 - 12 yr olds (trust me i bought my 6 yr old son one for xmas)and ps2 not only is its life span over, the ps3 (if we ever see it) will kill ps2. but the reason not many PSX games were not bought for the PS2 was most people owned a chipped Playstation and you cannot run copied games on a PS2. I don't know people with copied PS2 games. Plus how many decent games are out only on the PS2? LOADS! you don't win - you are just being biased because you own one of the consoles. I don't own any but have played them. Gamecube is a little kids console. There are about 10 adult games, if that!

Well just a few points, i dont own any consoles anymore, the last one i had was a Dreamcast, brand loyalty as ive owned everything they ever made ever. Yes you can chip PS2 have been able too since day one, lets be honest Sony never made any effort to protect their machines hence their popularity, send me your email address cause i have 90 odd ps2 copied games going to the person with the correct wad. Not mine someone elses unwanted now he has an xbox

Just realised my post may make a few cry or get sweaty under the collar so her it is in brief.

GameCube - Probably get supported by a few decent companies, Nintendo will produce loads of stuff of which 90% will be for children, granted most of the stuff will be quality, after all the are a publishing company and not a software/hardware company which most people think. The price is right.

PS2 - Dated and now looks it, shit load of games available, just like the ps1 decent titles can actually be counted on two hands (come on be honest), the exclusive rights they made companies sign (during the Sega v Sony war) was for 6 yrs and now its over so companies aren't gonna rush their products onto that ageing machine. Although it will still be supported, for a bit anyway. On the downside if you buy one new it'll loose its value very quick.

Xbox - The new kid on the block, uses some of Sony's mentallity as it was chippable from day one, on release last year a friend of mine got his chipped in Sheffield by the bloke (an internet legend) who makes the chips.Piveledged people only. Proper networking, compatable with your PC. Software being developed by outside hacking groups ie-dump your xbox harddrive to your pc for editing, its own multiformat media player etc etc. All major software companies writing for it. Same price as the ageing PS2 already. Plus it doesnt look like an Atari 2600. Can install a Linux OS. Hacked free internet access. Need i go on ?

Does the dreamcast really play DIVX movies? For people unwise to DIVX, it's an avi file of excellent quallity.. (mostly DVD rips) downloaded from the net on to your pc. Do I need any special software for the DC to play em?

I've really looked in to the xbox, and the only way it'll play DIVX is if you chip it and download a decent BIOS for the chip. Ps2's can be chipped, soldered or non soldered.. [img]smile.gif[/img] I might be getting a dvd writer soon. hint hint other than that a rage chip will only support data no bigger than 74mins on a cdr.. then you have to get games on dvd... as for the messiah or messiah 2 you are sorted... the dreamcast divx player is a boot disc of sorts, give me an email address and ill send you the file or something, but be warned the dc is bad at divx playback unless you re-encode at a lower bitrate, i have the tools you give me an address

how do u get an avi file to work on your computer? coz i have downloaded a few and when i play them with media player or via kazaa they just display the images that you would get if u were to play an audio CD (if u know what i mean)

To play avi/divx films yoiu need certain codecs.. go here and download the bundle software..

You don't need to use the player supplied, win media is ok for that. if that doesn't work, mail me and I'll give you some other files.

the cube is easy, remove the cd tray thingy cause it only takes small disc does it not (ive never seen one in action) replace the tray with a full size one a viola inset your copied game, next !

If you've got access to ftp, i.e bulletproof ftp or cute ftp or anything like that (not explorer) I'll turn my ftp server on for you tonite and put everything you need into a folder... plus there's some mp3', ps2 images, pc games, pc software, fil,s, porn, [img]smile.gif[/img] loads of stuff really..

well xbrick is a bit shit, the only good games are halo and splinter cell, but the controlers are arse and to watch a dvd you have to falk out another ?20 the ps2 has red faction 2 witch is as good as halo for me cause it has geo mod cause you can blow walls open witch is ace and some very original viachels to control, and ace weapons , and the getaway and vice city are amazing. if you ask me get an ps2. and you ask why ps2 aree a bit more.. cause there better!

but the x box has got an 8 gig hard drive, ps memory cards are ?27. but playstation dvd player is better quality!

The Sound -

If your not familiar to what dolby digital 5.1 means, then think of a speaker. Just one. Now times that by 5. That's right, you will be able to hear sound from 5 speakers while playing an Xbox game. I mean 5 different around the room 3 in front, 2 in back, plus the sub woofer hidden around the living room to create a big rumble. Isn't this rather unique? But I assure you, that's now all. The sound in Dolby Digital 5.1 is much better then your TV sound for example. Its much better in quantity and quality. A big thumbs up for this as well!

The lastly and foremost feature, is the Xbox's ability to rip songs off of CDs and burn them onto the harddrive to listen to your own songs while playing some of Xbox's games (This includes Project Gotham Racing, Amped, Fuzion Frenzy, both Tony Hawk games, and some others). There's one catch though. The Xbox will only play CDs that you purchase in stores or CD-RWs that you burn songs onto in audio format. No exceptions! But, sometimes, and only sometimes, the Xbox can play CD-Rs! Not all of them, just some of them. I'm sorry, I really don't know which ones.

X box may well be the technologically superior machine..but wasnt that true of the Sega Saturn???
It has got better support from the public than the Saturn had,but not half as much as they or anyone expected....

I dont think its a case nowadays of a dominant console...there is definately a market for more than one machine...ps2 wont die,and I disagree about the people dont buy games...I bought ff9 to play on the ps2..true I wont do it as much...but now there is a market for retro games and there will be in the future too...how many people have started buying cheap megadrives and snes and stuff???They had quality games too....

I still await to see a game that I will love on the Xbox...
