What's the ratio of moderators posting on your forum to those who are not moderators?
Most forums simply have other moderators posting on their forum. There are a lot of chefs, and few customers because the system encourages everyone to have their own forum.
The Hostboard messaging system probably could to be tweaked. Consider that a Hostboard member earns a higher designation depending on post counts. 0-29 posts is one designation, 30 plus is another designation.
Yet someone can be a moderator out of the gate, with zero posts???
If having a forum was viewed as a privilege that occured once someone has made a 100 post, or 250 posts...etc, then there might be a better balance of regular posters to Moderators.
The reverse to that argument is that if everyone is going to be a moderator anyway, then what difference does it make whether they make one post or 250 before they become a moderator?
Well, the Hostboard member has to choose what type of forums they like, commit to posting, and in the process, that creates overall traffic for those moderators that have previously put in their posts on other forums.
Plus, newbies who become instant moderators either A. stay on their own forum waiting to moderate, or B. go visiting other forums with an ulterior motive of getting other members to post on their forum.
Neither of those agendas contributes to the bigger picture. Making 250 posts before becoming a moderator would help overall traffic.
Until Hostboard makes it a bit more work for members to become moderators, it's irrelevant to talk about how many posters contribute to a forum, since most of the contributors usually are moderators themselves.
One of my forums has mainly non-moderators contributing, but that is specifically because the forum is very narrowly defined into a "hobby/craft".
But for many discussion/personality/beliefs based forums, the sad fact is most people who post on the forum are other moderators.

Actually, you had 1673 or less at the time of your post. I don't know how many posts you had when you got your forum, (you didn't say).

are you saying being a moderator lessens a board's validity? i don't understand why it should be an issue. if someone has interesting/witty things to say, what cares i whether they're mod or not?

You are right, but...
If everytime a new person posts on your forum it's a moderator, that basically means one forum, one member.
So the question is, is that a realistic foundation for a hosting service?

As for who will post here, I don't want moderators only posting here. If I were to make a list of who has posted here in the last 3-4 months, I believe it's been about 99% moderators.
The problem with that is it would be common courtesy to post on other forums who's moderators post here. I can't make the rounds to do that.
It becomes a chore or task rather than free will, and without a DSL connection, there's too much waiting time in between.
So whether it's one moderator or ten that posts here, I don't care.
So you as a moderator don't hold sway over me and what's temporarily mine. It's the regular poster that is does not post who is missed.
On a side note, I don't know what the "favorites" thing is about. [img]confused.gif[/img]

Having said all that, I should also mention that moderators are welcome to post here. [img]graemlins/hug.gif[/img]
But when a fellow moderator taunts me that if they stop posting here there will be almost no one else posting here, then it's time for the dreaded reality check.

If Hostboard has 2,000 active forums, and 5,000 active posters, it's basically a 2-1 ratio.
Forums ultimately don't function well if it's simply moderators visiting each other.
