When I first read the title for this topic I thought maybe the gay day parade in Northside was cancelled this year.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No it wasn't; however, rumor is you entered yourself as a float.Quote:

That is a very strange letter. What is it's source as it sounds like a reply to something.

I'm on some of council members' email lists, including Alica Reece's. This is not in response to anything I wrote.
I just thought it was comical that she said the Day of Peace was a success because there were no murders.
Yippee!
The letter is real. This is our city council at work!
thanks reason
I was just wondering as the way it's worded makes it seem like it's part of an email conversation.
Citing no murders out of the blue like that is really weird.
God I miss Cincinnati politics! I swear the most fun I've ever had was when I interned at Citicable.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Oh, you'd like that, wouldn't you! Can I tell Italian jokes?Quote:

There's an 8 year old in ICU right now, due to a "playground fight". Kid got his skull crashed in right good.
Oh, and we have a 14 year old being tried for not one, but two murders. Shoot-em-ups in the street murders.
Walking away, shaking my head. It's been a few years since I was eight or 14, but that kind of behavior wasn't common place. Or, maybe I've lived in a cocoon. Once again, glad I'm old.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">My sentiments exactly.Quote:

The unfortunate thing about dumb people is that they're too dumb to know the extent of their dumbness and all to willing to demonstrate it publicly.

Five murders so far this year have been committed by minors.
As you know, this is the police's fault.

I parked on Main, south of Central Parkway.Quote:

As you know, gae, I'm not exactly a small guy - I'm 6'3", and weigh 240.
On the way to the theater, I walked up Sycamore, and felt unsafe. On the way back, I walked down Main - a more pedestrian friendly street - and still felt unsafe.
Some would say I'm racist for suspiciously viewing all the loitering young black men I passed along the way.
One approached me for money. Others just stared as I walked by. Another one yelled, but I wasn't sure if it was directed at me or just a random thing.
Was I nervous? A couple times, yes.
My reasons for being nervous are legit. There are too many who've been brought up in broken homes with no direction, and give not a rat's ass about anyone or anything.
I'm not about to guess who's had proper upbringing, and who's packing heat and not afraid to use it.
Unfortunately, I did not attend the play on Alicia Reece's Day of Peace. I'll schedule better next time.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">What even scarier? The 14 yr old did what he felt he had to do? Quote:

Hey Reason....stay our of harms way, we need you to keep GL in line.
I have a BIL who works for a police dept NARC unit. I will be riding with them for a couple of nights sometime in the near future. I will report my firsthand experiences back to this board without predjudice or malice. I will report what I see. If it's all protestant church goers who are buying crack and beating up their spouses, I will report that. Fair and balanced...hehehe!!

Too much attention, youknowwhatImean? It was an uncomfortable feeling.
While I'm not at all a fighter, I think my size causes people generally not to mess with me. The friend I was with, however, looked quite a bit older, was dressed waaaaay too nicely to be walking in the 'hood (I much more casual with jeans and a polo shirt), and looked like someone easy to take down.
I understand completely why people are afraid to visit Main Street.

Reason,
your first post about Saturday night is exactly why we don't go down to Main Street anymore.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">This statement struck me when I read it this morning, because it says soooo much about the American culture in 2004. And it makes me think about Zell Miller.Quote:

To briefly recap a bio posted on a burried thread, his father died shortly after he was born and his mother raised him alone. By his own admission, it was a hellion when he was a teenager, up to the night he got thrown in the local jail.
The sherriff or chief of police (can't remember which) told him that he should get used to the view, because the way he was going, Zell would be a regular guest.
His story goes that he joined the service the next day, and finally found direction.
A name and face that proves that the cycle can be broken.
I find it interesting that at the turn of the 20th century, the literacy rate among blacks was in excess of 90%. And that the literacy rate has been declining since LBJ decided to create the Great Society.
Why bother to learn to read, or to learn a skill, or to respect yourself when the poverty pimps keep telling you that it's simply blatant racism that you can't get a job at 18 with 4th grade reading skills?
Boo,
What I think is scariest is that the shooter's mother describes him as a good boy.
We doomed, I tell you. Doomed.
Reason,
I wonder if the CCL is the reason you were "sized" up and not "served" up...
Good point, jumper. I haven't personally researched this, but the word on talk radio is that to get a CCW in Ohio, you have to fill out a gazillion paged form, listing every place you've lived since you turned 18.
Trav would have trouble with that, because some of his spacious college accomodations were parking lots two years ago.
However, the word is that it's relatively easy to get a Florida CCW. Ohio has reciprocity with Florida. And Target World has the folks who know.
I think we ought to get reason away from his organic farm for a morning and go shooting.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah.Quote:

Remember the one that beat the cop in an alley in Northside, only to be shot dead by the cop?
He was "good," too. His mamma said he didn't need to be shot. He had "goals."
Yeah, that's right, "goals."
Remember Shannon Marks? She was a very sharp young P&Ger who lived in East Walnut Hills about a decade ago. Her husband left for work, leaving the back door open.
A young black man who lived with his grandmother directly behind the Marks' house, entered while Marks was preparing for work and took a baseball bat to her.
One thing that struck me was how senseless the murder was. There was no motive, except to hit someone repeatedly with a baseball bat. The young man candidly admitted that if it hadn't been Marks, it would have been someone else.
Of course, this was followed by the classic comment from the grandmother after her grandson was convicted. Of the conviction, she said, "He was never given a chance."

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Walter Williams addresses this quite frequently. Racism is blamed for most of the black community's ills, but Williams points out that many of the problems are much worse today than they were in the 1920's when discrimination and the availablity of equal opportunity were arguably much much worse.Quote:

I've even dismissed the economics argument, a point which at one time I would have agreed with.
The black middle class is growing larger and larger. Even those today who can be considered "poor" are not "poor" in comparison to their parents and grandparents. While inequality certainly may exist, and discrimination certainly may exist, it no longer explains what we are seeing in the black community.
Black "leaders" have so grotesquely failed. The only thing they have left is to explain away their failures by using the easiest scapegoat available: white people.
Funny how the ones calling for the end to discrimination are the biggest bigots out there.

I shouldn't say that black leaders have failed. The popular ones have.
There are others that march to the beat of the different drummer, but they are derided for not toeing the party line.
Walter Williams is one. Shelby Steele is another. Tony Brown is another.
I'm going to put Bill Cosby on the standby list if he maintains his current line of thinking.
Reason, don't you know....anyone of these hoodlums were good kids and they were just about to turn thier lives around.
Bill Cosby was on my asshole list when he honored the so called boycott, but since then he seems to have seen the light more.
BTW....did anyone realize the boycott was still on? The BUF was in the news today....they are talking to the Black Baptists about some convention in 2008....I guess they still plan on boycotting the next 4 years. LOL
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Cosby is on my asshole list, too. I refuse to watch any of his reruns. Actually wrote the guy and complained that he gave power and support to bigots like Amanda Mayes. For doing that, I got a "friendly" note from his attorney.Quote:

While I think he has made a step in the right direction, he has not undone the significant damage he did to this city.
Without Cosby, there would be no boycott.
