Needs some advice...

My 15 year old daughter suddenly wants to get her navel pierced. (One of her best friends just had it done)

I'm neutral. Wifey says no way, she can wait until she's 18. I told my daughter that she'll need both of our approvals so it's a no go right now.

I'm on the fence with this one but I'm leaning towards the idea that she's too young to make this decision. She just recently got a second set of piercings on her ears. I would never let her pierce any other part of her body other than the navel whilst she is underage.

I'd like to hear other opinions on this.

well i told my daughter that when she's 12 she can get another hole in her ears but as far as a navel ring hm me personally i would wait until at the very least 16 or 17

I agree, Andy. 15 would be too young for any child of mine.

17 maybe, 18 they need to start making decisions for themselves <u>and</u> know/accept the responsibilities/consequences that go with them.

Mine answer is "nay". Unqualified. Plenty time enow to get pierced when she is supporting herself.

Don't have any kids, but my vote would be "No" until 18. For one thing it doesn't really sound like it is something she really wants per se, her friend did it so now she wants one. Also, the only 2 people I've ever known who had it done BOTH had theirs get infected (ick!).

NO until she has shown she can stand on her own feet, out of your house, independent, smart enough to know what is just fad shit and what really counts...like what to put between her ears.

tell her she can get it done, IF you videotape the prodedure and show it to everyone.

No, Navel piercings are supposed to be sexy and suggestive. If it's pierced, then it will be hanging out of belly shirts. 15 is too young to be sexy. Although, I got mine done when I was 16, so maybe I'm being a hypocrite.
Tell her that it leaves scars, and if she wants it done bad enough, she has to think about it for a year. If it's STILL that important after a year, then hey, at least she's not asking for a puppy. [img]wink.gif[/img]

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">it's a bad idea to let anyone under 18 get a body piercing because they're still growing. a piercing can migrate, sometimes so badly that it comes up right through the skin and falls out. that can lead to ugly scars. earrings are one thing..any other body part is entirely different.

also take into consideration that any piercing, especially a navel piercing, requires a lot of care and attention. they're also very painful the first two weeks or so after getting one..mine hurt so much that I couldn't have any clothes even lightly touching it. I went around in oversized pants and t-shirts until it started healing. I couldn't sleep on my stomach, or even let the covers touch it. you also have to soak it in sea salt solution, clean it on a regular basis, and rotate the piercing. you're not supposed to go swimming in a pool or in the ocean. they also get easily infected, especially if you handle it without washing your hands first.

I wouldn't let a 15 year old get anything pierced other than their ears. I waited until I was 20 before getting mine, so I could be absolutely certain that I wanted it and could take proper care of it. mine healed just fine, has no problems, and I don't regret getting it. but I'm glad I waited before getting one.

an insight in another courntry Andyman. Here in Swedne u see alot of pirced bellys but very very rare that u see it on girls under 18 but of course there is 15,16 grislr unning around showing half belly and have it pierced but I think it is to early and so do most ppl in Sweden. I owuld have told here that she can do it in a few years if she still wants it.

one thing about peircings as not with tattoos is at least they can take them out and let it close. advise your daughter that alot of people cant get these to heal properly. my 20 year daughter had it done and couldnt get it to heal very well and she took very good care of it. For me, it depends on how mature the daughter is for her age. some girls 15 have more maturatity than 20 year olds.

if you dont want it to happen, just be sure and describe how they shove the needle etc. and that might make her think twice. [img]wink.gif[/img]

by the way, my daughters never healed right and she had to remove it and let it close up. said it wasnt worth the pain or the money to do it again. and yes, she said it hurt worse than a tattoo

I'm a bit more lax about piercing than tattoos,
however I do think 15 is a bit young. I don't have a daughter, but if I did I probably would lean heavily to the "Nah" side.
As far as tats go...minimum age of 18. That's a more permanent decision and any younger than that is too young to be making that type of choice.
( I'd prefer 21 to be honest) A tat is a commitment, and I've known too many sorry kids
who have had to scurry around trying to figure out a way to remove or cover the choice they were so sure of at age 16. [img]frown.gif[/img]

To be honest, I'm gonna go against the flow and say personally I don't see anything wrong with it. The scarring really isn't that bad, the only thing you may wanna consider is the risk of infection which I believe is quite high. I would go for saying that you won't try and convince her mother but if she says yes then you'll agree.

yeah I think the most important thing is a meeting of the minds between you and the wife. gotta be a joint decision for sure, but as I said, at least with peircings they can be removed

Hell how can I ever tell my kids not to peirce or tattoo something, I'm covered with them!

When I have kids and it comes to tats/piercings I won't tell em no, just to make sure it's definately what they want.

my oldest daughter got a small tattoo on her inside ankle about 3 years ago when she was 17. we did alot of talking and going over and over how perminent it is and what if...yada, yada yada. I really thought she thought it through and to this day neither of us regret her doing it.

so recently, my youngest who's 16 went through the same thing. the wife and I both talked to her at great length going through everything pro and con about it and she still wanted one. After alot of thinking about it, the wife and I finally allowed her to get a very, very, small one on her ankle. one that could later be covered if she changed her mind on it. Kind of hard to say no when she was the only one in the family without one. Now the whole family is inked. Me the most, but they can still say they have one. all are happy, but the wife is the one that doesnt care for hers anymore. Me, I say give me more!

Well, from a girl's perspective, i honestly say that is way too young to get a naval pierced. I'm 19 years old and i still don't have my naval pierced, and i don't plan on getting it done ever. To me, it's just stupid and it's another dumb teeny bopper trend.

You know what you should do, i know at that age girls tend to be rebelious and think they have the right to do what they please. You should tell her and show her the side effects that can happen with a piercing, let her know and understand that having your naval pierced is going to be 10x more painful then it is with having your ear pierced.

I know she is going through that phase where she wants to look cool and fit in with the crowd but she needs to think of the long term effect. Just because if she gets her belly button pierced is not going to make her look any cool, if anything, it's going to make her look like everyone else, it's going to make her look like a follower.

She's too young to have her naval pierced, she may not understand now and argue you guys to death that she knows what she is doing, but she'll thank you in the long run, you know how girls can be.
