I am surprised no one in HOD has inquired about this Fest yet (unless I missed it)... Here I go then...
Anybody attended the Modern Drummer Festival last week end? If so, what are your comments? I would have loved to see Antonio Sanchez perform...

I saw Antonio recently at a Percussive Festival here(last Wednesday).....the guy rips for sure [img]cool.gif[/img]
He's a bad ass, he and Billy Kilson are the "new" guys i am checking out nowadays.
No doubt...good choices!... that's who i'm checkin out these daze, also... AWA Bill Freekin Stewart [jazz @#$%&*! mofo]...
...also hope that they market that MDF w Sanchez as a dvd soon...

Like I mentioned earlier I attended his clinic at sum Percussion Festival. Very cool "down to earth" , I spoke for about 15 minutes after the clinic and he for sum odd reason he mentioned Dave and Vinnie in our convo(maybe he visits HOD [img]tongue.gif[/img] )
Not only did he do 4 years at Berklee he went on to do 2 more to get his Masters in Jazz Studies at The New England Conservatory. He's 28 now and has the music world knockin at his door!
He's also got a great head on his shoulders. he told a story about how things went when he first went to Berklee. I'll try to do his story justice and I'm paraphrasing here.
he said " when I first got to Berklee I had a nice 6 pc Fusion/rock kit, Power Toms and all. I was asked by one of the teachers if I would like to jam with his Be Bop band since his drummer could make the gigs. When I went in I was jamming along doing all my stuff and the Teacher started to stare at me. I said to myself, Yeah I'm Bad and he digs me. All of the sudden he comes over and takes away 2 of my toms. Well I still had 2 more and my double bass pedals. They started to stare at me again and I was like, they must dig me! All of sudden the teacher comes over and takes away another tom and unhooks one of my bass pedals and takes away some of my cymbals. Yeah, There I was Snare, Tom, Bass, Hi-Hat, Ride and crash. Yeah I was bad, I was so bad I sucked, That's the lesson I learned that made me understand about playing for the song".

Interesting story Bozzio. Sometimes you have to be "humbled" before you can rise and positively mature.
I am assuming you guys already got Metheny's "Speaking of Now" right? Some aspects of Antonio's playing that inspires me is how he fills in "space", how he builds up momentum, how he sustains specific moods (tensions) with colorful cymbal work. Then pulls some nice tasty chops at the right moment, nice balance!! [img]graemlins/music.gif[/img]
