More Top 40 Vinnie

For those interested, I was surprised to see Vinnie's name in the liner notes for Eros Ramazzotti's latest album "9," released today.

I'm on the 4th track now, and the efforts are similar to Faith Hill's CD...

Not very many Vinnie-isms on this one, in fact, I can safely say none at all... but it grooves...

I was listening to the radio on the way work(yes its a 100 mile drive so I cant really afford to listen to anything that will take my attention away from the road so I always put the radio on)

and there was this J-LO song with sum nice piano playing(and trills)and the groove in the intro kinda stucked with me as did the "cymbal setup" the drummer was playing(loved the crash sound-Ziljians likely)......when I checked the credits for the CD(on MTV's site)it reads Omar Hakim on da skins! Numero, what are the best discs containing these Vinnieisms in your opinion? I'm in a buying mood.

For some reason or another Karizma's Document comes to mind, but dass cuz I ain't got the Cave Men CD yet.

I got Cave Men the second I heard about it. It rocks harder than the Bunny Brunel CD which is real laid back. Other great Vinnie (besides Document) is Live at the BP, the Jing Chi CDs, Big Drum, Chick Corea's Akoustic Band live in Tokyo and the Japanese import of VC's solo outing with the bonus track; a totally whack rave-up with Stube and Landau. Thanks To Frank and Shut Up & Play Your Guitar is the top of the mountain IMHO.

Can you think of anything else that's really smokin'?

Warren Cuccurullo's THANKS TO FRANK disc contains ten studio tracks Vinnie played on (plus one live track with Jerry Cuccurullo on drums). Nick Beggs of Kajagoogoo (remember Too Shy Shy?) fame plays bass on five of those tracks and Pino Palladino, the famous British session bassist, handled the other five on August 20th and 28th, 1994. Two days that will definitely go down in Vinnie history. The time frame was shortly after the infamous OJ low speed chase and about the time Vinnie was recording his solo CD. Warren says he absolutely wanted Vinnie for the songs so the studio tracks were done in two 16 hour time blocks when Vinnie had a couple of days off from Sting. Seven of these tracks are first takes!! Two tracks are third takes and one is a second take. It's amazing they were in the studio for 32 hours when they were getting that much work done so quickly. I guess getting drum sounds, running down the tunes and other studio banalities ate up the time.

If you want to check out some killing pop drumming by Vinnie, check out Nik Kershaw's "The Works". The songs are actually really good and very well crafted. In my opinion, Nik is extremely underated as a writer, his melodies, chords and lyrics are fantastic, great pop tunes. Also, Vinnie is all over it like a cheap suit!! His playing rocks on that album. It is like the producer has hired Vinnie for his 'Vinnieisms' as you put it and just let him do his thing! There's a ridiculous one bar drum break that Vinnie plays which is just stupid too! See if you can find it!
I don't know if anyone can back this up (Randy?!) but I was told that Jeff Porcaro recorded the whole album, but they decided to get Vinnie to re-do it instead. In fact Jeff is on just the last track called "Walkabout" which is a typical 'Jeff' half time shuffle.

A HOD member, not Gamden, but who shall remain nameless for now, stiffed me on a trade for Kershaw's record. One of my dawgs will have it though, somewhere.

Dazz that kershaw cd is a collectors item and usually goes for ?30 upto ?60 (i've seen it for).

Shame they dont re-release it.

While we're on the subject of great pop playing by Vincent.. check out a track called "Patches of Happiness" by Julia Fordam. It's again, a great pop tune and is in 3/4. His playing is wicked and there's another silly fill in it out of a bridge into a chorus! The interplay between him and the bass is great too.

Yes, I am quite aware that the music is terrible on Big Drum by Buell Neidlinger, but the third track on that disc (Beujerk) is without question one of Vinnie's finest hours in my opinion. He throws in rock, funk, and jazz into all of his fills in that tune while playing swing, and it works perfectly. If you don't have it, check it out.

There's a "vinnieism" or two on Kimo Williams' Tracking. That's a definite must-own. Also check out Live at the Baked Potato vol. 1 & 2. Although Vinnie is on only one track on each, the other drummers are hardly chopped liver -- Weckl, Wackerman, Humphrey, Bissonette, Philips, Gottlieb. On Vol. 1 Vinnie, Abe L., Tavaglione, and Jeff Richman cover Peter Gabriel's Mercy Street and on Vol. 2 the same four play a reggae-ish groove that the Modern Drummer reviewer described as being something liked "deranged" and "distorted" by Vinnie. An apt description. I like 'em both.

'Hey Zawinul' has a very cool Indian swing that Vinnie just locks into. Has anyone attempted to transcribe the solo from 'Indian Time Zones'?

Dazz, you wont find that in Tower. Theres a cd on ebay in Holland right now sitting at ?15, watch it rise.
If it goes for less than ?25 i'd be suprised.

Clint, I've got Indian time zones figured out except the first half of the hand/foot part at the end. maybe you could help me finish it?

I was listening to it earlier. I fold extremely easy when it comes to transcribing but I'll give it a shot for an extreme challenge. Can't guarantee results. That hand and foot dazzle gets mighty dense before Vin brings everybody back in.

P.S. Got any tips for figuring out these dense parts without slowing it down. I don't have the means to do so. Thanks for any suggestions.

A few other great finds for VC fans are "That was Then" - Wishful Thinking. This has Vinnie on most of the tracks and he solos many times on these full-out fusion tracks. Even less known is "Digital Madness" by keyboardist Barnaby Finch. This mid 80's recording featues VC and has an extended open drum solo on one track. Another gem is "Time Zone" by keyboardist Jacob Magnussen. Fusion tunes with good hooks also. I used to hunt this stuff down in the 80's. Even found a "Yamaha recording studio" demo album that has Vinnie and Nathan East singing on one track! After hearing that I know why it was the only track they sing on (ouch...).

BIG DRUM----what can I say? This is Vinnie at his post-bebop baddest! Who cares if he overplays, it's in the Tony/Elvin vein, and the cats in the band can imitate EVERYONE from Monk to Mingus to Albert Ayler, with minor nods to Miles and Trane. It's a hard listen, I admit, but rewarding. This is music Weckl couldn't've done justice to, forgive the dangling participle. Sure, Dave could have read the charts but his style would've emasculated it. The 14 minute 'Ming's Visit' is worth the admission alone.

Terrible? Whatever.

Yeah I was in Dallas hanging out with Brandon (Plaid) we were listening to Big Drum.
Absolutely some of the SICKEST drumming ever. Ridiculious and nobody on the planet has that combo of those type of ideas with the facility to actually execute them.

Lately, I've been diggin on Richard Bona's "Reverence" CD....It features Vinnie on 4 or 5 tracks....
VC's playing on this CD is extremely tasteful and restrained,with a few exceptions of course..VC's playing shines in the jazz/afro-beat setting...
He does cut loose at the end of the last song...
Unfortunately it's terribly short....but sweet...

I havent had the chance to pick up the Warren Cuccurullo CD yet.....I'll be sending away for it this weekend....

As for full out VC..I've been checking out my old copy of Patittucci's "Skecthbook" .The tunes "Scophile" and "Spaceships" come to mind.....But then again that whole album has got awesome drummers all over it...

I like VC's solo on the title track....It's weird but its melodic....Yeah that solo from "Buejerk" is pretty outrageous....His left hand is all over the place on it.....And the licks are so melodic that you can pretty much sing the chord changes along with the drumsolo......And it's makes perfect sense....

Hey guys one CD Vinnie plays on which ive never heard anyone mention here is Steve Stevens "Flamenco a GoGo"....I took sum interest in Steve after I heard his killer playing on BLS("Black Light Syndrome" + "Situation Dangerous"), his all over the place on that record-style very reminiscent of John Petrucci from Dream Theater(lead guitar), lots of chromaticisms, and metal riffs, cyclic chord proggresions etc....but more versatile(classical/acoustic wise).....

Vinnie plays on 2 tracks -"Letter to a Memory" and "Riviera '68", I wouldn't only recommend it to those seeking everything the Vinman does, the music itself is great, I would described it as a mix of "electronic/flamenco/ethnic world music"(Greg Ellis does percussion just in case)....

Yup man, don't let the hair fool ya [img]tongue.gif[/img] , the guy has massive chops(probably one of the most underrated guitarists in the fusion world-in case u haven't listened to BLS get the second disk "Situation Dangerous" which is probably my favorite prog/metal-fusion album, standouts include: "Crash"(listen to the double bass!), "Tragic"(the solo and the ways he builds the tension towars the outro and resolves to the intro proggresion), "Lost" and "Tziganne")
