The bootleg I know I've definetly got, is one
of the Tonypandy Naval Club gigs. The quality
isn't great, but there are couple of - eh -
ludicrous things about it. I'm heard interviewing
them afterwards for an Australian fanzine, and,
if I remember right, their answers were purposefully
surreal. Secondly, inbetween encores, one of
the local proles is heard getting on stage
and mumbling into the mic - 'Fuck you, and
fuck your band' [bomp! the mic hits the floor].'
Rough crowd.
I'm still curious as to why I haven't heard
any local whispers about Angels. I'm also curious as
to what happened to Jon and co.'s Sugarkill.

AFAIK Heartbreak Angels finished in the early 90s. Daz, this isn't Ian Hunter, this is the guy Hunter replaced.
God only knows what happened to Sugarkill; wasn't Fitz from the Joeys in that too?

is the same Ian who sang on all the demos - I think.

Hey Everyone! Wanted to clear up a few things....I was the original member of Rich Rags along with Stu(guitar) and we released two demos before I left to join Heartbreak Angels!!
The best line up we ever had in Rags is when we had two guys from Nottingham who were so heavily into Shark Island at the time that all our songs took on a whole new dynamic that i personnally loved but Stu was never that keen on so it never lasted that long. We ended up getting the drummer from Kingmaker who ruled on the kit was about as rock n roll as a Kit kat!!!
The best thing about being in the Rags was just the fun of it all and the fact that we predated alot of that glam scene! We had a major following and obviously when Ian joined after i left they then took it to the next level but as i predicted it didnt last!
Stu is one of the sweetest guys i know and last i heard he was playing with Gay Dad(a bit worrying really).
Ian Hunter was only ever really relative when he was in Black September , a great Hull goth band, and to me his style was never suited to The Rags and as a consequence things between him and Stu were never far from a fist fight although i do recall some starry night in Leeds stoned, pissed Ian telling me how he was going to take my place in Rich Rags, offering me some coke, me laughing and telling him there was only room for one rock star in Hull and it wasnt him then rather spookily 6 months later it happened!
I have some great memories not least of doing a gig with Lisa Dominique and after her totally inept perfomance walking into her dressing room asking her out, getting turned down, then walking into the arms of a beautiful blonde who i took outside performed the deed and when i phoned her the next day Lisa answered, it was only her sister, so i promptly put the phone down and issued a vow of secrecy to everyone who knew as I didnt want it to affect anymore support slot opportunities!
I am still in Hull. I run a promotion company called Rockatop Promotions. La Guns are playing 7th nov at the welly club with support from Adam Bomb so if ya can make it please do!
As for the rich rags stuff!! I managed to track down some tapes and a video that we shot in 87(infamously on Thats life!)but im looking for a heartbreak angels video from Marquee circa 89 any help would be fantastic.
I also have a new band called Dakota Flame and should have some stuff for you guys soon!

Yes thats the very same Heartbreak Angels.
The video was shot by a member of another band but i never got a chance to see it!! The gig itself was a stunner, was reviewed in Kerrang where my old mate ray Zell likened entering the Marquee to see the Heartbreak angels was "like being aboard the starship enterprise, you never knew what beautiful freaks were lurking in the corners!" plus i never lived down the constant Davy Vain comparisons tho i always wanted to be Robin Zander vocally with Phil Lewis's stage presence
We played some great gigs with Kill City Dragons and Billy became a great drinking buddy.
We used to hole up in any swat we could and the best time i remember is sharing a flat with some guys from Monterrey and Shuff from Teenage Idols. Gingers curry was always the most anticipated meal of the week and Julian from Soho roses had a gorgous girlfriend who lived in the flat whom i couldnt keep my hands off!!
Debauchery was never too far round the corner but it was all good clean honest fun!! With all the sleaze girls from the Sunday sport paper wanting a piece of our ass in return for their exploitation in the pubs, where there was a will there most definitely was a way so no matter that we had no money we never went without(even if it meant waking around 4 in the morning from a heavy night at the hippodrome to steal the local bakery's delivery for a weeks supply of crusty bread!
I could go on and on .......

Hey up! LA guns gig sould be a blast!! Adams recent gig in Hull was spectacular as usual and i couldnt think of anyone else id rather have as support, can you??
The idea behind my promotion company is too bring Rock n Roll back into Hull along with a whole load of fun and excitement! The scene is predominantly indie-fied and I dont know about you guys out there but i find these concerts dull dull dull so I just want to bring great bands who put on great shows big or small and if theres an audience for it then im gonna keep on working the magic until the flame flickers and dies but as you guys know, Rock n roll is eternal right!
RE: Ian Hunter. He crawled up his own ass and died bored shitless!!!! Dont know what hes doing but i havent seen him in hull for along long time.
Check out his Black September stuff it rules(circa83 - 85, well he was 40 when he was in rags.....)

Andii Vamp - Absolutely no offence taken at all its just my personnal opinion and one which as a member of Rags and knowing Stu and the majority of the Hull Glam rock scenesters very well i feel im entitled to give but I never take offence so no worries on that score.
I just have a different perspective on things knowing Ian as I did quite well and the fact that he came from a gothy background and was, in my opinion, suited to that style way better than the Rags but when i was in Rich Rags we leaned towards a more out n out party sound and thats what every gig was and we were the best show around at that time without a doubt!! It was quite strange going to see them with Ian in the fold and when he first joined he definitely found it hard to set his own stall out and basically just reproduced what had come before him but i wont argue with the fact that by the time the cd came out they definitely had the image and persona's working big time and Ian was never short of anything to say and was way too intelligent to be in a rock band!
The final gig in Hull was, how shall we say,interesting! Stu punched Ian, Ian punched stu, guitars flew kits exploded...It basically ended how it began!!
I was a fresh faced 17(just turned) year old when Stu finally managed to persuade me to join his band Rich Rags and I loved every minute of it we had a ball. Together we managed to shake a few asses and have many good times but I shot myself in the foot by trying to be a god before my time. I never wanted to leave Rich Rags at all but the attraction of London was too much and Stu definitely had a right to be pissed at me(we never spoke for years) but i was so young and starry eyed i just had to indulge my gut feeling but it was definitely a mistake.
I always remember walking into the Kerrang offices to plug a gig and bumping into Alison Joy, her face was a picture!! She had single handedly been responsible for keeping a photo of Stu and myself in kerrang for months!! It was only meant to be an ad for a new drummer n bassist but she liked it that much she invented an award that was just for us, something like 'hottest picture ever' or something like that but when i bumped into her at Kerrang hq she had the photo blown up to picture size and hung in her workspace it was quite a sight! Ray Zell had tried to burn it on many occasions he was that sick of seeing it apparently!Well it must have been better than seeing dave reynolds ugly mug on a daily basis right!!

My memory only lets me recall certain things and while i definitely recall The sex Kittens(had an ace demo by them - once) im not sure if thats the band that mutated into Heartbreak angels but it very well could be.

Darren mate i can get you a cd with the four tracks the original Rich rags recorded with my vox and those songs are do you wanna dance/lip service/vicious tongue(the best rags song ever and probably the heaviest!)/one way ticket..plus i have somewhere a 4 track demo we did feat weeza n the sex girls,private eye and wide eyed child. Ive also got some live tapes and rehearsals featuring covers of osmonds/blondie,hanoi songs, somewhere!!!
I can do a cdr and get that to anyone who wants them basically but it might take a while for me to dig them out but the offers there for anyone who wants it!

The Sex Kittens - not entirely sure what happened to most of them, but at least one of them (my mate Macca) went on to Love It To Death.

There were so many cool glam bands around back in the heyday but i cant put a name to them now! One band i loved had a demo out 88 time they were from Leicester might have had the word baby in the title..turpentine...i dont know but they were awesome. I heard of them thru a chick called Sulekha who ran a cool fanzine called DUDE and kept me up til the early hrs with late night calls!!
Ive got the original Kill city Dragons demo somewhere too and that is just pure bliss! I heard it actually got released on cd aswell as the vinyl but as like rocking horse shit, hard to find!

They have a couple of albums out (Desert Orchid is the best), but "Baby Turpentine" was only ever a single and never on the albums. If you like I can cobble together a Crazyhead compilation for you. Our Music dept. organised a gig at Piper the
other night, which apparently is now a monthly
regular event. There's no reason why we couldn't
take a few cameras along to LA Guns, but I
presume it'll be a hassle clearing it with the
authorities, or, maybe not, if the musos know
it's for the benefit of the uni, KIT and BBCi
etc.
The original launch date was October 1st, but
that's gone tits-up. November 1st is more
probable.
