What's the funniest/strangest question you have ever heard at a drum clinic?
Oh man, there have been lots...
-One was last night at the Lang clinic "what kind of hair product did you use in your DVD? It looks like you got a nice firm hold!" -by our very own matricks!!!
another from last night...
-"Who is faster, you or Virgil?"
general...
-"Why do you play traditional grip?" aaarrggh!!!
Virgil Donati clinic...
-"Can I have your sticks?"... my friend asked Virg and he actually got them!
Man, there have been tons... wish I remember them all!
I also remember some wise-guy asking Virgil to play with brushes, just to see if he could do it... and, of course, he could. VERY, VERY well!
Infact the guy asked something weird and specific like "can you show us how you think Elvin Jones would play -insert tune here- with brushes?" ...something like that anyways.
i remember peter erskine asking, what is the one thing that definines different styles of music?.......
we all said, harmony, tone, lyrics.....
his response......
underlying subdivisions.....
this fried all our little brains....
chris perra
Vinnie / Tim Landers clinic '83 or 4.
Vinnie has just finished a da**-near 30 min. mind-altering solo, aft which most of the peeps in the room are lookg under each others' chairs for their jaws, & former "specially brewed tea" drinkers are crouching in the corner slobbering & babbling incoherently...when some bright rocker lad asks, "Uh, what was that one lick you did?" To which Vinnie, aft lookg at this guy for a second or two in puzzlement, says, "which lick, again?" to which the guy responds, "you know, that like, Bonham lick you did a while back...you know...it kinda was like...'bagga-bagga-dabagga-dabagga-da-bagga-bagga-baggiduh'...the one you started w your RH, & uh..." to which VC responds, "lick 147 or lick 1856...[chuckle], [pause]...Bonham himself did do a few diff licks, too, I suppose"...
Virg clinic earlier this year...mid 20's to 30-ish dude asks him how much did he listen to Portnoy...
Honorable mention [heard at almost every clinic]..."how did you get that good?"
...and...
"Whaddya think of Neil Pe[a]rt' [pronouncing his last name like the shampoo; but in actuality it rhymes w "ear," w a "t" on the end]...
...or, "What's your favorite Rush song?"
But the #1 most ridic ?:
"Hey, Virg - can ya show us some swing?!"
Er, I meant, "Pert"...
J/K - LOL
OK, really, it has to be, the "who's faster, you or [so & so]...?" question.

Here is a good Weckl one. Weckl just finished a burnin' solo and right when he finishes a hand pops right up. Dave hasn't even gotten up from behind the drums yet. Dave points to the guy, kinda off guard by the quick question. Here's the question in its' entirety:
"...yeah, but can you play funk?"
Dave then showed him that he could play funk...
Some good ones, guys.
Bryan, that was the ultimate...classic...freekin hilarious. DW has indeed been "foc[us]ing/'funking' us" since CCEB1 album ;cP
I forgot to mention once when this guy asked Bruford "what brand of underwear do you endorse"...i believe that was actually meant to be in jest ;c) [ya think?...you NEVER knowwww]<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hey, Chris, are you sure that 'guy' wasn't 'da Steverstein?! A guy at a Billy Cobham clinic stood up and said, "Uh...how many different styles can you play?" After about an hour of ridiculously incredible playing, I think the guy lost count. I couldn't even begin.
the most memorable one for me was at the first Montreal Drumfest...
During Dave Weckl's clinic someone asked "Dave, how can you focus for so long?"
Well, the guy asking had a strong french accent... it ended up sounding like " Dave, how can you f**k us for so long??"
Dave said "pardon?" a couple of times until he understood the actual question. It was a funny moment...
Bryan
A guy at the recent Chad Wackerman Clinic/Concert in Palatine, IL asked, "Could you play the 'Black Page' just on the snare drum?" He responded, "I could but what's the point? It's a piece written for the whole drum set." And he proceeds to demonstrate, driving it right up the questioner's a** to the ammusement of all.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thomas probably refered to that funny question in his recent clinic here. He was doing his (LONG) gear description and finished by something like: "...and Meinl socks and Sonor underwear and Thomas Lang Signature hair gel!"Quote:

Then after a first couple questions on gear, a guy stood up and asked:"Can I ask a question on something else than gear?". And Thomas to respond seriously:"NO, I only take questions on gear, next!!". And the guy to sit down and Thomas going:"Okay...I'm kidding!".
I heard this at a clinic once:
"Could you show us your hottest licks, please?"
Can't remember who the clinician was, but I thought it was damn funny at the time...
cheers everyone,
these are great!
i remember once at musicians institute someone asked virgil to demo big band swing with some hits. didn't sound that great.

"My peeps spoke w Lang's peeps" ...
And they said its very first package of products & complimentary accessories is on its way to Seattle...1st tube gel, mousse, spritz[er], spray firm-hold, & official TL comb/brush pack.
"VC moustache"/sideburn/neck trimmer-clippers, too.
Weckl gave it "2 's up" [his was the 2nd shipped - but it also came w a pair of shoes. His DB playing increased ten-fold upon wearing.]
[However, he did also complain that the clippers couldnt be swung around about the head hard enough, tho.]

That is what i am talking about! Good looking out for me Fuse!
The clippers may not able to handle a Weckl mullet, BUT i don't have a Weckl so it is of no consequence. You would need the official Dave Weckl garden sheers for that.
P.S. It never gets old making/hearing jokes about Dave's mullet... unless you are Canadian...
...admittedly the only reason I bought "Back to Basics" was to watch Dave's mullet gently sway with every movement he makes...wonderful.
We're veering dangerously off topic here but, Dave ain't got nothing on Bobby!

speaking of mullets....here is everything you wanted to know (and didn't) on the aforementioned distiguished hairstyle.

Business in the front, party in the back!
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">HAHAHA! WHAT!? What is that supposed to mean? Do you think that all of us Canadians have mullets or something? I used to have one when I was 7 years old, and it WAS infact cool to have one... but... wtf!? LOLQuote:

The only place where we still find mullets is in a Montreal suburb. We call in the "Longueil" style.

I counted 4... yes, 4(!) mullets BEFORE the Lang clinic even started! When they were setting up, the set up guys AND one student had one. Oh, and the dude from Long & McQuade, the broken arm guy who looked like Zoolander... he had something going on with the 'let too. I didn't think that crossing the border would actually make a difference but it really does! I spent ALOT of time in Winnipeg (damn girlfriend...)and i actually think that Surrey has more mullets per capita than even Winnipeg. I crossed the border and boom... there they were. Yeah, i even know a guy from Vancouver who comes CLOSE to the Bobby Rock... but not quite... Bobby Rocks...
I have never experienced a Montreal mullet... is that one that sticks out from under a beret? I can't imagine a French-Canadian drinking wine and having a mullet?!?! I am not trying to imply anything, just pondering the theoretical-paradoxical possibilities that lie within the juxtapositions of the said paradigms...
Okay, Okay...I'll add Winnipeg and Vancouver mullets too but that should be it.
Actually we drink a lot more beer than wine. Especially these days with the NHL lockout...we ain't got nothing else to do.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">This is so typical of us. Hey, that could've been me!Quote:

To go off further, when I was a young student I had a summer job in a tourist shop where we would sell eskimo artwork. There were lots things made out of seal fur. In french, seal is phoque (pronounced "f**k"). But I was sure that the same word was used in either language. So to every american tourist who asked me about this fur, I would say: "f**k...f**k...f**k...!". I didn't understand why they would all look strangely at me and leave...
P.S.: I don't know for how long this topic will be able to go off like this!?! Is there a moderator on line?...Oh well...It's saturday night, they're all giggin' I guess...
Hehe... um... i could go somewhere and it would be funny but i would rather not get kicked off here...
Damn, that is a good springboard for a joke about my Canadian gf who spoke french... but i can't! Hehe, oh well...
Funny ones, Rhythmatist, Tombo, Burzmali, et al.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, I'll bet he nailed the tar outta the hits/kicks, but it prob didnt swing really hard... Quote:

[Gotta watch those Swing Lawyers...they're perched with a swing-paintball locked & loaded in their sites...]
Oh, all in good fun. I love hard swingin' - as long as it isn't from out on a limb on the wooden Rock n Roll Tree...

Thanks for the Thomas Lang hair update. I am glad to see that my question inspired his own line of hair gel... i do think i should, therefore, be his first honorary endorsor...
YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKIN' ABOOT!
One of the funniest questions I heard was at a Thomas Lang clinic, where some kid asked him what kind of shoes he had. He replied, "Red ones. Do you like them?"
I heard someone ask him about his shoes too... Thomas went on to describe how stylish they were
Sometimes people just ask for the sake of asking heh.
LOL
Heheh. Made my day. You folks rock.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, sounds like what a couple of frontmen in my past tried to do to us by screwin' us [...over]. I'd like to name names, but I don't wanna give 'em any free publicity. Quote:

I was at the post office the other day [mailing off a few trades that i've finished ], when lo & behold, this dude in his L30s - E40s walks past me dressed all in black [incldg tank top & gestapo boots], with a long, partially grey mullet [& balding on top & hairline] , like an older[!] Ronnie James Dio...
I used to have a mullet up til the late 90's /8c[ & wondered what all the fuss was about, but since i've cut it off, every time i would see a "mullet holdout/holdover/stonewaller,";c) i rem thinkg how cliched, bizarre, & ridiculously outdated they look now ..."You might be a redneck / 80s poser-hair-band fan if..." ;c) :cp
...Glad I've "crossed over from the Dark Side" now ;cP
[eh, oh yeah..."Poise-un rulez"...heheh...What?! You mean it's NOT 1986 anymore?!]

Josh Freese's punk band The Vandals have a song dedicated to the mullet on their CD Hitler Bad, Vandals Good.
Cool band - funny songs and good drumming - Brooks Wackerman has done some stuff with them too.
