I've got one now. I feel very "in the loop". My mom made me fall off my chair when she asked me if this was a "personal blog that everyone seems to have?" My mom is like sixty.
Anyway, username is Jadian. If any of you are interested. I plan on keeping my friends lists short just because it's mostly a forum for my family and offline friends back in BC. But you know... heads up.

I have a feeling I was damned way before I started my LJ.
Firebird made me get one.
I've never felt the need to start one. First, it takes energy and I don't have enough time to post on the forums I like, let alone starting my own public diary.
Questions:
What do you put in a blog? I know everyone is different, but I would think writing about my personal life is the last thing I'd want to have on the internet, even under a pseudonym.
So do you use it for other reasons? A soapbox? A polital rant? Jokes? Other stuff?
What motivates you to keep one, and what do you want to put there for everyone to read?
And why is it useful? Can you give me any good reasons why I am sadly behind the times an need to start one?

I was content to lurk in other journals. I started one to keep in touch with Bird.

Yeah, I've been checking that one sporadically. For some reason, everyone I know who knows about seems to think it's a fake. But I like it.
As much as I like his writing, I haven't been through this one yet.
I think FB made me get one, but I don't recall. It would be under the usual username, of course. In fact, I think I'll go find that out right now...

Going waaaaay back to Gem's question -
I keep one because there about six people, family and friends, who are across the country from me right now. They can't talk to me much due to the horrible phone plan my residence has, so it's the perfect way to keep everyone somewhat updated.
I keep a written journal offline so I'm not really looking to bare my soul. I'm not doing it to meet people, either, which is something I understand motivates other livejournal people. I'm sure everyone has their reasons, and that's mine.
In case there are any Margaret Cho fans...
ok, I blame wiloe for all this. She had one, and I wanted one, then Jely got one, and gave me the code so Orenda could get one, and then Jace started reading mine, so I wanted to get him one, but he rejected it, so we gave that code to Luna, who posts in it about as much as I see her in real life, and then Jace got one so I could lock mine up.
so, yeah...
I don't know, that sounds like Bird's at the center of the evil to me...

Questions...
1. Are there any free journals, or do you have to pay for your space online?
2. Can you make your journal private, so only the people you invite to read it can read it, or are they all open to the entire public?
3. Are there big differences between the many live journals out there?
I can answer the first two:
1. yes, the one I'm using is free, because i was invited by a user. This limits my options but I still get a basic functional journal. If you want a livejournal, just get some one to invite you. I'm a newbie so I'm not sure exactly how it is done.
2. yes, you can. I think the only people who can access a private journal are people on your "friends" list, which you create. However, that might mean that the only people you can give access to must have their own lj.
I'll leave the rest to the more experienced posters...

2. Jadion is almost spot on. There are three settings you can chose for every single post:
private = no one but you can see it
friends only = only people who have a journal and are on your friend list can read the post
open = anyone who finds your journal can read it.
3. From what I hear there's not much difference between most. Livejournal.com is probably the biggest out there right now and has a good reputation. Several clones have sprung up that give more privaliges, but have yet to prove their durability and quality. I don't know much about about other ones like deadjournal.com but like I said I don't think there's that much difference. I have been at livejournal.com for more then a year now and I really like it.

I just signed up for my blog. I am making my way through the FAQs, but, since somebody here might know...
Is there any way you can change your settings so that your posts are private by default? Its annoying having to change every single post.
