Somebody is interested in buying my Maple Custom kit that I bought in 1993. They're in excellent condition. I'm wondering if these drums have kept a special value (collectible yet?). What would be the depreciation of these drums?
It's about time for a change but I'll sell them only if I can get a very good price and have enough for something else.

I could see where someone would want to purchase the drums because they are maple customs but I doubt they have any greater value just by being maple customs.
For example.
In the early early 90's Russ Miller and I built a kit. It was all Keller Maple with custom sizes 8x8 10x8 12x8 etc. The snare had dual strainers etc. All the drums were fitted with tiny Pearl piccolo lugs (even the 16x16) - the kit was tweaked!
When I had them for sale I thought for sure I would get a premium due to the craftsmanship and uniqueness...I was wrong.
Most of the callers for the kit didn't know maple from marble and the guy that finally bought it was more concerned with what cymbals came with it!

what are the specs on your kit? perhaps someone i know may want them.
man, I would NOT sell those if I were you. It takes about 10 months to get Maple Customs now and if you change your mind later (and you will) you'll be screwed.
MC and RC are the best drums ever IMO. (only thing as good is a good Gretsch)
btw, MC are not discontinued. You can still get them from any Yamaha dealer but it's special order only. (for now)

I agree w/Derek for two reasons. First, my neighbor has the same kit from about '90 and got into the electronic thing. He put them away for years and recently pulled them out, put new heads on and they sounded AMAZING! Secondly, I read recently that these drums age very well and with proper care, will only sound better.
I agree, i have a maple custom kit from around 1993-94 and they just sound better an better. i installed the yess mounts on them and that even opened them up more. ive played some gretsch kits and the MC'S are really similar and IMO better because of the yamaha hardware.
I agree with you all as well.
I have two MC kits (93 Blk Stain & 99 MC Absolute Sea Maple Blue) and I wouldn't sell the 93s.
I might sell the MCAs to help pay for a custom set built by Fortune Drums, but I'm keep the 93s.
Every time I record with the MCs the engineers rave about the tone and control.
I'm not a fan of the snare because the small lugs start to pull with high tension. The toms are fine though.
i did read in a md interview w/ garibaldi and he mentioned hagi from yamaha saying that the older the drum, the better it sounds. he says that drums need to age ( like wine? ) in order to reach it's full sonic potential. so maybe it is good to just hold on! [img]smile.gif[/img]
Well, I don't know what to do. It seems that everything I hit nowadays sounds better than my kit; maybe it's just me and the fact that I've played only this kit for a long time. But I'm tempted by very thin shells (i.e. Pearl MMX,...). I can't afford to own 2 kits so I'll give it more thought...

Well it's interesting to note that almost all of the Yamaha sponsered players that were playing MC's are now playing MC absolute's. There's been a lot of changes since the MC days.

Just because Yamaha Drum Artists are playing Maple Absolutes now dosn't mean that they are better that the thicker shelled, Maple Custums. A company will always put the latest models in the hands of the Artists, thats how people hear new product.
Remember its bizness!!
All the companys do it not just Yamaha.

Sorry for the late Reply... Just back from Vacation in my home town.
And I happened to stop by Tombo's home and had the pleasure to meet him and his family face-to-face. So we pulled the HOD Secret Handshake and had a drummer-hang (way too short). Tombo is a very good drummer with lots to offer.
Tombo... Your Drums sounded real nice, think REAL carefully before selling them. You're bored of your sound? Maybe try changing heads for a change?? Go Evans for example... One thing for sure, my next kit WILL be a Yamaha. A Maple Custom or Recording Custom, dunno yet.

Just another example that this is not just a virtual community. Real drummers actually meet, hang, become friends, share, trade, (or party, drink, and sometimes do strange things…e.g. TG vs MG documentary [img]wink.gif[/img] ).
It's crazy because, through HOD, BeatHit and I found out that we:
Are the same age;
Grew up a mile away;
Know the same people;
Studied at the same college;
Played on the same drumkit;
But we actually never met before.
The world is getting smaller with the internet!
Beat, you’re too kind. Really wasn’t so great…It’s intimidating to play for an HOD regular, cause, as it should be no surprise for you folks, well Beat is… GOOD. He has nice groove and funk/fusion chops going on. He’s also an honest, cool and humble guy. We talked drums and how much we dig Paul, Vinnie, Dave, Dennis…
As for my kit, well thanks. I happened to buy Evans G2 heads last week for a recording I had to do this Tuesday. Put them on, hated the sound and put my old heads back. I think I’m searching for something new that these drums just can’t give. I’ll give a chance to clear Ambassadors. The guy that came to record at my place actually found the kick awesome as well as the large tom…(well I agree for the kick).
It was nice from you to take some time off your parents and family to visit an HODer. Maybe next time in TO or Mtl DrumFest??

You pulled some nice Latin grooves, like the one with your double bass/Hi-Hat pattern. Your Latin theory is definitely in place and it got me thinking... Why not upgrade the next Hang into a lesson [img]wink.gif[/img]
