So I have had gigs both Saturday and Sunday with a corporate tonight, the weekend jobs were weddings and just when you think you have seen everything, something new pops up and lastnights gig was no exception.
The groom being a multi level tycoon (think herbal life) must have been sitting around bored and decided, hmm how should I aproach my wedding?
Well, he rode into the wedding on an elephant and the bride flew in onto the golf course green in a helicopter. The ceremony was held on the golf course, no biggie there.
All in the band were taking bets if Jumbo would rush the crowd as the helicopter landed near us.
-
Good Christ, man. That elephant must have smelled like ASS. And with all those people and noise... They must have drugged the huge bastard senseless so he wouldn't kill everything in sight.
-
Actually, the elephant was cleanest beast i have ever been around. Really surprised. He must have been drugged especially since he did not move when the chopper came in and it landed about 100 to 200 feet away.
-
Hahah, that's very cool. Well, I did a wedding on saturday, and no elephants or helicopters to speak of, just sandwiches. So, a tycoon, eh? I hope he was generous on the fee.
-
Randy,
That's quite a story!
Amazing elephant! Can you imagine
had something happened?!

I have never seen anything to top
that, though I have seen a few un-
usual things at weddings etc.

The only other really weird thing that happened at a recent wedding I did was where the party was held at one of the most expensive resorts in Phoenix, The Phoencian, they had bought out the private restaurant and even had gone as far as having engraved pillows for each guest on the chairs.
That's not the interesting part, not 20 minutes into the gig the wedding couple were in a huge fight and the groom split and the bride was in tears. They had not been married an hour and it was all over.
Just to keep the party moving the hotel served dinner and they even cut the wedding cake and served it to the guests.
-
Playing a wedding or corporate gig can be very taxing for half the time they don't care.
A wedding we did on Saturday the crowd were like crickets, no response, our singer for the night belted out a kiler song ( can't remmber what it was) and our bandleader got on the mic and says 'thanks for that round of indifference" The bride runs up and proceeds to reem him a new one for making such a rude remark..........I was in tears in laughter watching him get busted for that.
-
An Elephant at a wedding? That's a new one. But
I did a corporate gig once at an airport and they were giving free helicopter and airplane rides to everybody (except of course) the band and the servers...
Oh, speaking of large animals
3 chicks (not chickens) got up on the bar and took their shirts off at the gig this weekend. It wasn't as pleasent as it sounds. All 3 of em were Waaaaaaaaaay to large to be up there. It was actually kinda scary and dangerous.
-
Yes...weddings. The last one we did as a band was back in March. Most of the guests had travelled from overseas to the venue (a winery) &, like Randy says, they coudn't care less about the music. They wanted a dance band, we played pretty well I felt, but everyone was just outside smoking and chatting. Got a few 'your'e too loud' comments too as the only real interaction from the crowd.
Even though this was a gig for a 'friend of a friend', we still didn't get all our pay for that nite.
-
OK, you guys are on a roll here, so I'll 'play'...
"Actually, the elephant was the cleanest beast i have ever been around."
- Yep, I'd have to agree w that...including many musicians/bandmates in past years
"not 20 minutes into the gig the wedding couple were in a huge fight and the groom split and the bride was in tears. They had not been married an hour and it was all over...
LOL, brilliant! Till death do us.. oh, goodbye then!"
- Too bad bands don't usually play at divorces...lot more $$ in that [AWA a lot more of it going on, stats-wise].
"Chris can play softer than anyone I've ever heard and he was barely getting air through his horn. Then on the break, the manager turned on the house music and it was twice as loud...Got a few 'your'e too loud' comments too as the only real interaction from the crowd."
- I have seen this kind of BS, plenty. When they run up & tell you that, just keep answering them repeatedly, "What? WHAT?!" Then finally, "Shhh! You don't have to TALK so LOUD"...
"'thanks for that round of indifference"
- that's bloody hil-ARIOUS...I'm gonna use that at least once in my life.
"An Elephant at a wedding? That's a new one"
- Not new at all, I've seen plenty...& that's just the bride [or groom, best men, in-laws, & bridesmaids]...Da-DUM-TISH!
"3 chicks (not chickens) got up on the bar and took their shirts off at the gig this weekend. It wasn't as pleasent as it sounds. All 3 of em were Waaaaaaaaaay to large to be up there. It was actually kinda scary and dangerous."
- Scary for the 'BAR' itself, that is...gives new meaning to the term "lumber"...
Smile...it won't bite ya...it's only just a little [more] humor, there, folks...

Very entertaining post Randy! Maybe we should start a new topic- STRANGEST GIGS !
I think your 2 would be the tops though.
People with lots of money get weeeeeeeeeeirrrrrrrrrrddddddd (a lot of the time). Especially at social events. I see it all the time in N.Y.C.
One time in Boston I had a wedding gig and one of the groomsmen came over to the band 2x and yelled at us for playing too loud. The second time he came over the electric bassist wasn't even plugged in! I was on brushes the whole night! I think he was picking on us because we were so young looking.
Another time was in a nice restaurant on Madison ave. I hired Chris Cheek (sax for Paul Motian and the best kept secret). The manager kept on asking me to turn the sax down.
Chris can play softer than anyone I've ever heard and he was barely getting air through his horn. Then on the break, the manager turned on the house music and it was twice as loud.
I won't even get into what I see at these parties. My soul takes a beating on some of these gigs.

An elephant and an helicopter on a golf green...In terms of weirdness, that is hard to beat.
Cool weird gigs guys! Could be an endless topic. I did my share of them...
Like my first paying gig. I was 18 and in a prog band. That summer we decided to learn a top-40 repertoire to play clubs and make some money. On our 1st date, we ended up being booked for 3 weeks in the middle of nowhere...in a strip joint. We had to play for the strippers... Customers could'nt care less about us and the strippers were often quite busy off-stage doing booth duty or extras in the rooms upstairs. After our 1st night we were devastated. Half the band wanted to split but we told ourselves that at least we were playing and the money was ok. Also we could'nt sleep, because, well you know...rooms with cardboard walls and showgirls doing overtime... We knew somebody who had a cottage at an-hour drive and ended up staying there. On one night, to make me a surprise, my parents did the distance and showed up... The surprise was for them! I don't think they were that proud of their son. At one point, noticing that nobody cared, we switched to our prog repertoire. They liked it! One of the girls even did some choregraphy on Aqualung and she was paying us lots of drinks. On our last night she came to us, almost crying, so sad we were leaving. She hung us and shook hands telling we gave her some reason to live cause she had...AIDS...Man she touched me!, I said (remember, it was in the 80's and we didn't really know how it was contracted). We felt bad for her customers...but we quickly packed and went away...

Well, there WAS Jenna Jamisons Bday Bash a few weeks ago. Brian McKnight was the guest vocalist along with Marion Meadows on sax.
-
Were Dirk Diggler and Chest Rockwell there??
They form a <s>terrible</s> fantastic rock duet in Boogie Nights!!
-
LMAO
I was told the bash she had at a local strip club was MUCH more raunchy. BTW, Jenna has a s*** load of tattoos that I have never seen, big one on the back of her neck.
-
...she should get 1 big-a** 'too that says "s***-load of tattoos" on her...
