And it wasn't Journey. It was lame. We paraded forty of the greatest drummers in the world through their rehearsal hall, from Omar Hakim to Chad Wackerman. They embarrassed me, but they truly embarrassed themselves. They had no diplomacy or aplomb in the way they handled any of these musicians. They disrespected virtually all of them, and then took the worst drummer of the bunch. Never even said a 'Hi' or a 'Bye' or thanked or - they never would make any of those calls. And this was at the point where I was getting pretty sick of doing this my whole life for these guys. My pooper-scooper runneth over. And boy, it was really running over then.

One word about that story "Brutal." Man all the money in the world is not enough to live your life in a Quagmire like that. It is really sad.

Thank you, benrand! This interview reveals the putrid stench of the soft white underbelly of raised on radio rock. This is a must read for anybody who entertains the thought of being a star or that talent will out. It's always been more about ass-kissing and getting along than the music, unfortunately.
Steve Perry was, is and always will be a supercilious turd. I've been privvy to the back story of Journey for years, which is why I can't stand listening to them. Herbie Herbert is my hero; he should be the speaker at the commencement exercises of all the PITs and Berklees in the country. I love what he had to say about Steve Smith's replacement Mike Baird: "They paraded 40 of the best drummers in the world through their rehearsal hall and picked the worst one of the lot." Goddamned right!

it wouldn't matter one bit, because there are plenty of young guys with stardom and fame in their eyes that go to those places. It's just America for you.
But Perry comes off REALLY bad here. What a tool. That Behind the Music was amazing. He broke his hip? Huh? WTF? Herbie nailed it when he said Perry was little mor ethan someone with no education, a rube. I've known plenty of musicians who fit the Steve Perry mold, pricks all of them.

If you were drowning in the ocean, and Steve Perry came along in his luxury liner, he would offer you a life raft in such a manner that you would decline it. I'm not just talking about you; I'm talking about anybody. The terms and conditions would be such that you would pass.

I have nothing against Baird, solid meter & all & pop studio savvy, but he's way outta those other cats league....

You can probably tell the level of desperation in Journey with the level of the "shhhhshshshhshhs" type singing Steve Perry did. you know, that singing he did where every single word was preceded with "shhhzzhh"...over-emoting douche.
He had (has) Lead Singer disease in spades.

1 thing i will say about him...he had really good intonation, & was good at "that style"...

It's long, but it is worth reading. Lots of dirt on Steve Perry and some info on how Steve Smith came to be in the band.
And, of course, on the nature of making money in music.
herbie's right, work's over-rated. Now if I can find a way to do without it...

The Moral that I got out of this story is that no matter how much success you have, don't go crazy with your $$$ cause someone could bail. Steve Perry decided not to tour during their prime and ended up putting a couple of those other guys (Not- Steve Smith) in financial trouble. After that, Perry had full control.
What a jerk off !!! But, that's what we're dealing with in the music business.

Ahh, the music biz...This story reminded me of a tale I heard about a member of the Doobie Brothers...way after their hey day, he was working in a supermarket, packing shelves on the late shift and he hears "Minute by Minute" come over the muzak. He puts down the crap he was stocking, walks out the back door, gets in his car and just drive off all night.

One doesnt hav to look very far to see some of the awful truth about the biz [Billy Joel & Springsteen's ordeals, to scratch the surface].
I've even endured/lived thru/survived a few of these scenarios myself...what is the saying - "live & learn?!"...but not w/out a price [partial sanity, for one; as in, resentment [img]graemlins/grrr.gif[/img] , & a few regrets; NTM time wasted] =( [img]redface.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/thinking.gif[/img] ....

Great article, what gets me is these guys are out there busting their ass and Perry still gets paid while sitting on his. I don't know how that deal was made but hopefully Perry will get his in the end.......... Ya know, Karma

Had to post this...I got home late from work last night, caught the Journey thread...read all of it...hit the sack...went to NAMM...and.......
Ran into Neil Schon first thing in the morning, not more than five minutes after walking through the door!
A Twilight Zone moment for sure! Very cool guy. In fact, w/o doing the name dropping thing, everyone was on the high positive today. Good time!
